Terry Phelan Wants Lionel Messi To Leave MLS: 'It's Not Healthy...'

Terry Phelan thinks that Lionel Messi needs tougher competition than MLS for the FIFA World Cup, suggesting the Saudi Pro League could enhance Messi's performance.
Former Manchester City left-back Terry Phelan has said that if Lionel Messi wants to develop an 'appetite' ahead of the FIFA World Cup next year, he needs to ensure that he plays in a tournament which provides strong competition and not Major League Soccer because it isn't healthy for him.
Speaking to GOAL, Phelan said that the American league wasn't ideal for Messi as he was finding it too easy on the field.
Phelan said that the Saudi Pro League teams performed well in the FIFA Club World Cup and the league could help Messi raise his level again before taking the field with the Argentina team in 2026.
'That's the $100 million question isn't it. I think David Beckham has done a wonderful job at Miami. He's built a club with the support around him and a support network," Phelan said.
'Are we looking at Messi looking at the World Cup and going 'I need to play in a better competition because I need to be in form for the World Cup next year?' Saudi Arabia? He doesn't need the money to go and play there," Phelan added.
Meanwhile, Messi had two goals and two assists, Telasco Segovia scored twice as well and Inter Miami defeated the New York Red Bulls 5-1 on Saturday, July 19.
It was Messi's sixth multi-goal match in his last seven games. He became the fifth player in Major League Soccer history to record at least 35 goals and 25 assists over two years, joining Robbie Keane (2013-14), Sebastian Giovinco (2015-16), Carlos Vela (2018-19), and Cucho Hernández (2023-24).
Miami scored two goals in three minutes midway through the first half to take the lead. Messi's beautiful pass to Jordi Alba tied it at 1-all in the 24th minute. Then Messi's lofted pass over the defense led to Segovia's first goal.

'Captain Takes The Call': Shardul Thakur Reveals What Shubman Gill Told Him After 1st Test

Last Updated: Shardul Thakur bowled just five overs on Day 2 that saw England score 225/2 from 46 overs. Shardul Thakur bowled 16 overs in the first Test – six in England's first innings and the remaining in second dig. He was benched for the next two games and after being recalled for the fourth Test, he bowled five overs on Day 2. In comparison, Jasprit Bumrah bowler 13 overs while Mohammed Siraj and debutant Anshul Kamboj delivered 10 overs each. Is the allrounder being underbowled? Has he had any conversations with captain Shubman Gill regarding his underutilisation as a bowler? Thakur does admit that not bowling regularly impacts the rhythm but adds that these calls are taken by the skipper. 'If you talk about the first match, he (Gill) said there wasn't much scope to bowl me. Usually the captain takes the calls (who bowls), player doesn't have much say (in it). As far as this match is concerned, the way the game progressed, there was a possibility for a couple overs but there's still time left in the game – three days. I will get more overs, hopefully," Thakur told reporters after the end of play on Day 2 of the 4th Test in Manchester. 'Rhythm is always difficult, when you don't know how much you will bowl or when you'll bowl. But I will try to use whatever experience I have and use that in my bowling. That's all I can do," he added. After India battled the challenging batting conditions of the morning session to be bowled out for 358, they ended up conceding 225 runs in just 46 overs with England losing just two wickets. Thakur said that the ball wasn't doing much compared to the first session when it was causing all sorts of trouble to the Indian batters. 'I think the (new ball) bowlers were trying to find some swing in the hope that, or probably I would say the way we saw there was some swing and seam in the morning, we hoped that it will do for us also but it didn't happen and probably that's what I would say [bowled on the pads)," Thakur said. Thakur though added they could've been more patient. 'With the new ball we could have been better and after that, yes we were trying to hold it back like I said but runs kept flowing. It wasn't difficult for bowlers, I would say. We could have had much more patience in terms of bowling the channel, which we didn't," he said. view comments First Published: July 25, 2025, 10:13 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Unnati Hooda Creates History, Becomes Fourth Indian Woman To...

Last Updated: Unnati Hooda has made history as the fourth Indian woman to reach a Super 1000 quarterfinal, defeating PV Sindhu at the China Open. Star shuttler Unnati Hooda on Thursday created history to become just the fourth Indian women's singles player to qualify for the quarterfinals of a Super 1000 event on the BWF Tour, joining Olympic medallists Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu, besides Malvika Bansod, in the illustrious list. In a defining moment of her fledgling career, Unnati stunned Sindhu in a gripping three-game match to storm into the quarters of the China Open. While Saina and Sindhu have multiple appearances, Bansod had also reached the quarterfinals of the tournament last year. Facing Sindhu for just the second time, Unnati held her nerve in crunch moments to register a brilliant 21-16, 19-21, 21-13 win against the former in 73 minutes, marking her first quarterfinal appearance at a Super 1000 tournament. Unnati, who has won Super 100 titles at the 2022 Odisha Masters and 2023 Abu Dhabi Masters, will next face Japan's Akane Yamaguchi, the third seed and a two-time world champion. Sindhu, ranked world number 15, came into the match on the back of a solid victory over Tomoka Miyazaki but found herself outplayed by Unnati's speed, precision and unrelenting energy. This is the first time that Sindhu has lost to a compatriot in an international tournament in seven years, the last being the 2018 Commonwealth Games final defeat to Saina. She had lost to the latter in the 2019 National Championships too. In a match that featured high-octance rallies, momentum shifts and moments of brilliance from both ends, it was Unnati's fearless approach that made the difference. From 13-all, Unnati surged ahead with four straight points before sealing the game 21-16, leaving Sindhu on the back foot. The second game was tighter, with neither shuttler able to pull away. At 19-all, Sindhu executed a clinical cross-court drop that left Unnati stranded and followed it up with a precise smash to push the contest into a decider at 21-19. The final game saw a noticeable dip in Sindhu's consistency. Unnati capitalised on a string of unforced errors from the former, including mistimed smashes and poor judgment at the net. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Now, a major revelation has been made that former Barcelona player and coach Xavi had also applied for the job. This was confirmed to The Times of India by AIFF's national team director Subrata Paul. 'It's correct that Xavi's name was there,' Paul told TOI. 'The application was emailed to the AIFF.' As per the report, the AIFF technical committee did not consider Xavi's name due to the possibility of a high cost that his appointment may lead to. More from Football 'Even if Xavi was genuinely interested in Indian football and could be convinced to take up the job, we would need a lot of money,' a member of the technical committee told TOI. It's well known that Xavi occasionally follows the Indian Super League (ISL), something that he disclosed a while back in an interview with The Athletic. 'I sometimes (follow) the Indian League because many Spanish coaches are there,' he said. As a player, Xavi won eight La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies. He also won two European Championships with Spain, besides winning the 2010 World Cup.
