Terry Phelan Wants Lionel Messi To Leave MLS: 'It's Not Healthy...'
Terry Phelan thinks that Lionel Messi needs tougher competition than MLS for the FIFA World Cup, suggesting the Saudi Pro League could enhance Messi's performance.
Former Manchester City left-back Terry Phelan has said that if Lionel Messi wants to develop an 'appetite' ahead of the FIFA World Cup next year, he needs to ensure that he plays in a tournament which provides strong competition and not Major League Soccer because it isn't healthy for him.
Speaking to GOAL, Phelan said that the American league wasn't ideal for Messi as he was finding it too easy on the field.
Phelan said that the Saudi Pro League teams performed well in the FIFA Club World Cup and the league could help Messi raise his level again before taking the field with the Argentina team in 2026.
'That's the $100 million question isn't it. I think David Beckham has done a wonderful job at Miami. He's built a club with the support around him and a support network," Phelan said.
'Are we looking at Messi looking at the World Cup and going 'I need to play in a better competition because I need to be in form for the World Cup next year?' Saudi Arabia? He doesn't need the money to go and play there," Phelan added.
Meanwhile, Messi had two goals and two assists, Telasco Segovia scored twice as well and Inter Miami defeated the New York Red Bulls 5-1 on Saturday, July 19.
It was Messi's sixth multi-goal match in his last seven games. He became the fifth player in Major League Soccer history to record at least 35 goals and 25 assists over two years, joining Robbie Keane (2013-14), Sebastian Giovinco (2015-16), Carlos Vela (2018-19), and Cucho Hernández (2023-24).
Miami scored two goals in three minutes midway through the first half to take the lead. Messi's beautiful pass to Jordi Alba tied it at 1-all in the 24th minute. Then Messi's lofted pass over the defense led to Segovia's first goal.

Veteran India Batter Announces Retirement From Professional Cricket; Check Details
Veda Krishnamurthy, who represented India in both the ODI and T20I format, has announced her retirement from professional cricket. Veda represented India in 48 ODIs and 76 T20Is, scoring 829 runs and 875 runs respectively. The former India international had last played a T20I match in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup Final in Melbourne in 2020 while she donned the ODI colours last in 2018. She took to social media to announce her retirement. While announcing her retirement, Veda also added that she was ready to give back to the game. "A small-town girl with big dreams. That's how it all started in Kadur. I picked up a bat not knowing where it would take me. But I knew I loved the game. I never imagined it would take me this far from narrow streets to the biggest stadiums, from quiet hopes to proudly wearing the Indian jersey. Cricket gave me so much more than just a career. It gave me a sense of who I am. It taught me how to fight, how to fall and how to keep showing up. Today, with a full heart, I'm calling time on this chapter," Krishnamurthy said in her post. Apart from her India career, Veda also captained Karnataka and Railways in the domestic circuit. In 2023, she led Karnataka to runners-up finish in the Senior Women's One Day Trophy for successive years in 2021-22 and 2022-23. "To my parents and siblings, especially my sister, thank you for being my first team and my constant strength. To my coaches, captains and mentors, thank you for shaping me. To BCCI, thank you for trusting me with the honour of representing India. To KSCA, Railways and KIOC, thank you for giving me the space to grow," she further wrote. "To my teammates, you made every bit of this journey worth it. We've shared everything - wins, losses and laughs that will stay with me forever. You were never just teammates. You were family. To my friends, thank you for being there, especially when no one was watching. Captaining Karnataka and Railways was an honour I'll always hold close. Those teams shaped me, challenged me, and gave me space to lead with heart. And India... nothing comes to the feeling of wearing that jersey. The anthem, the Adrenaline, the pride - it lives in your bones forever," she added. In her retirement post, Veda also wrote about how she felt proud to be a part of the team in 2017 - a remarkable year for women's cricket in India, when the team reached the ICC Women's World Cup final at Lord's. "And 2017... what a year to be part of a World Cup that changed how people saw women's cricket in India. I'll always be proud of that. To the physios, trainers, seelctors, and every single person who worked behind the scenes, thank you," she wrote. "This game gave me everything. And I'll always be grateful for it. Now it's time to give back. Whatever the role, whatever the way, I'm here for the game. I truly believe this second innings will be just as meaningful. I played with fire in my heart and pride in every step. Always for the team. Always for India," she concluded. Her final on-field appearance came during WPL 2024, where she represented Gujarat Giants. She has also worked as a commentator and broadcaster.

Joe Root Breaks World Record Of Scoring Most Runs Against One Bowler In Tests
Root has scored a total of 588 runs against Ravindra Jadeja in Test cricket. No other batter has scored more runs than him against one bowler in the five-day format of the game. Joe Root is England's best batter of all time. The right-handed batter from Yorkshire, since making his Test debut against India in Nagpur on December 13, 2012, has played a total of 157 matches for England and with the help of 38 centuries and 66 fifties, scored 13,409 runs in 286 innings. Root came out to bat at No. 4 for England in the first innings of the ongoing fourth Test against India and scored 150 runs from 248 balls with the help of 14 fours. During his 150-run knock, Root broke multiple batting records which includes overtaking Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting to become the second highest run scorer in Test cricket. He also now holds the record for scoring most Test centuries (12) against India, fourth most centuries in Tests (38) and second most fifty-plus scores in Tests (104). In addition to that, Root also broke Steve Smith's record of scoring most runs against one bowler in Test cricket. According to data shared by Cricbuzz, Root has scored a total of 588 runs against India's Ravindra Jadeja in Test cricket which is the most by any batter against one bowler in the five-day format of the game. Smith is second on the list with 577 runs in Tests against England's Stuart Broad and Virat Kohli takes No. 3 position with 573 runs against Australia's Nathan Lyon. India's Cheteshwar Pujara has also scored 571 runs in Tests against Lyon. Smith, who has 403 runs to his name in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, was dismissed by Jadeja on Friday. He was stumped by Dhruv Jurel on the second ball of the 120th over. This was just the second time Root got stumped in Tests. The previous was to Nathan Lyon in the Ashes 2023 opener at Edgbaston. view comments First Published: July 25, 2025, 23:19 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Chinnaswamy Stadium Declared 'Unsafe'; RCB, World Cup Matches Under Threat
Last Updated: The Justice John Michael D'Cunha Commission declared Chinnaswamy Stadium unsafe for mass gatherings, threatening the 2025 WC final and RCB's future games in IPL. The Justice John Michael D'Cunha Commission, appointed by the Karnataka Government after the deadly June 4 stampede in Bengaluru, has declared the Chinnaswamy Stadium 'unsuitable and unsafe for mass gathering'. It puts into threat several matches scheduled at the ground, including the 2025 Women's ODI World Cup final. 11 people died, many teens among them, and several others were seriously injured near the stadium premises in a huge gathering to celebrate IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)'s maiden IPL win in the 2025 season. The team had arranged a parade, with the government also putting up some functions — none of which the city's infrastructure and police force seemed prepared to manage. The commission also proposed measures to avoid such tragedies. 'Adequate entry-exit gates for mass entry and exit (ingress and egress), and emergency evacuation plans compliant with international safety norms," it said. The local T20 tournament, called the Maharaja Trophy, will already be held indoors, after a directive from the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). If the government was to accept these recommendations, it would be difficult to see the ICC hosting the World Cup final and three other matches of the tournament at the venue. It can also have an impact on RCB, who play seven matches here every season, and will be expected to get the hosting rights for the IPL 2026 final and second qualifier as the defending champions. 'Until such infrastructural changes are made, continuing to host high-attendance events at the current location poses unacceptable risks to public safety, urban mobility, and emergency preparedness," the comission said. It also recommended legal proceedings against KSCA president Raghuram Bhat, now-resigned secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam, RCB vice-president Rajesh Menon, DNA Entertainment Networks MD T Venkat Vardhan and VP Sunil Mathur. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
