What Are The 10 Longest Home Runs in MLB Home Run Derby History?

Fox Sportsa day ago
MLB All-Star Week brings a lot of buzz and excitement. The Home Run Derby is certainly a reason for that, if not the biggest reason for all the buzz that takes place during the All-Star festivities.
The 2025 MLB Home Run Derby will take place at Atlanta's Truist Field on Monday evening. Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, who leads the league in home runs, headlines the field alongside other stars like Byron Buxton, James Wood and Matt Olson.
Could one of these players hit one of the longest home runs in the history of the event? Only time will tell.
Ahead of tonight's event, here's a look at the 10 longest home runs in the history of the Home Run Derby. 10 Longest HRs in Home Run Derby History T-10. Shohei Ohtani: 513 feet (2021)
Ohtani's Home Run Derby debut was highly anticipated, and he delivered a show for fans that night. The then-Los Angeles Angels star hit 28 home runs in the first round, with his final homer being a 513-foot blast that went well into the top deck of the right field bleachers at Coors Field. Unfortunately for Ohtani, his opponent was able to hit more homers in the opening round, knocking him out before the semifinals (more on that soon). T-10. Aaron Judge: 513 feet (2017)
As Judge burst onto the scene as a rookie in 2017, he made a loud Home Run Derby debut that year with a statement win. In the semifinals, Judge hit a 513-foot shot that might have left the park if the stadium weren't enclosed. 9. Pete Alonso: 514 feet (2021)
Ohtani was just one of a handful of participants who hit a 500-plus-foot home in the 2021 Home Run Derby. Playing in the hitter-friendly Coors Park, Alonso hit a 514-foot homer that nearly hit the video board behind the left-field bleachers in the first round. That was one of Alonso's 35 homers in the round, which was a record at the time, as he went on to win the derby for the second consecutive year. 8. Bobby Abreu: 517 feet (2005)**
It takes a lot to hit a ball out of Comerica Park, but Abreu did that in 2005, blasting a 517-foot homer that cleared the right-field bleachers and the porch behind it. That was one of his 41 homers that night, as he went on to win it all. T-5. Sammy Sosa: 518 feet (2002)**
The Chicago Cubs legend put on a show at the Home Run Derby in then-Miller Park in 2002, hitting several home runs that landed in the highest deck of the left-field bleachers or near the slide in the stadium. T-5. Josh Hamilton: 518 feet (2008)**
Hamilton had a night for the ages in the final season of baseball at the old Yankee Stadium in 2008. He hit a then-record 28 home runs in the first round. One of those was a 518-foot shot that ricocheted off the wall behind the right-field bleachers. While Hamilton hit the most home runs that night, he actually lost in the final to Justin Morneau. T-5. Trevor Story: 518 feet (2021)
The then-Colorado Rockies star looked comfortable at his home ballpark in the 2021 Home Run Derby. One of his home runs was a 518-foot blast that traveled to the last row of the bleachers behind the left-center field wall. While Story hit 19 home runs in the opening round, he lost to Joey Gallo by one in their head-to-head matchup. 4. Frank Thomas: 519 feet (1994)**
The top deck of the bleachers at the old Three Rivers Stadium was really far from home plate. That's why it amazed fans when Thomas hit a 519-foot homer that hit the wall at the bottom of the top deck of the bleachers behind the left-center field wall in 1994. While Thomas hit the highlight home run that day, Ken Griffey Jr. won that year. T-2. Sammy Sosa: 520 feet (2002)**
Sosa's second-longest home run of the 2002 Home Run Derby landed along the edge of the bleachers in the top deck behind the left field face at then-Miller Park, drawing oohs and aahs from fans and his fellow All-Stars. T-2. Juan Soto: 520 feet (2021)
Soto hit the longest home run of the four homers hit during the 2021 Home Run Derby on this list. His 520-foot homer landed in the middle of the top deck in the right field bleachers, helping him beat Ohtani in the first round. He lost to Alonso in the semifinals. 1. Sammy Sosa: 524 feet (2002)**
Unofficially, Sosa hit the longest home run in the history of the derby as part of his laser show in 2002. Even though Sosa's 2002 performance has three home runs that appear on this list, Jason Giambi beat him in the final that year.

San Francisco Giants pick FAMU catcher in MLB Draft

Florida A&M University catcher Broedy Poppell is officially headed to the pros. On Monday, July 14, the San Francisco Giants selected the FAMU star in the 13th round of the 2025 MLB Draft, using the 386th overall pick to grab one of the top two-way standouts in HBCU baseball. A Tallahassee native and graduate of Maclay School, Poppell has been a key figure for the FAMU Rattlers since joining the program in 2022. He entered the NCAA transfer portal following the conclusion of the 2025 season but remained in the spotlight thanks to strong showings at the MLB Draft Combine in June and the HBCU Swingman Classic, held just days before the draft. With his selection, Poppell becomes the 29th player in Florida A&M program history to be drafted to Major League Baseball, according to The Baseball Cube. He's also the first Rattler drafted since Aubrey McCarty, who was taken by the Colorado Rockies in the 26th round of the 2017 draft. In 2025, Poppell anchored FAMU's defense as the starting catcher. He posted a .973 fielding percentage, recorded 258 putouts, and earned First-Team All-SWAC honors. He was also named Second-Team All-SWAC in 2024. At the plate, he brought power and consistency. Poppell hit .325, led the team with 69 hits and 12 home runs, and finished second on the roster with 58 runs scored. His combination of defensive reliability and offensive production made him one of FAMU's most valuable players-and a clear MLB prospect. Athletics select Florida 3B Bobby Boser in Round 11 of 2025 MLB draft

The Athletics selected Florida third baseman Bobby Boser with the 320th overall pick in the 11th round of the 2025 MLB draft. Boser spent three years at South Florida before transferring to Florida to take over the starting third base role. He provided the most stable bat and glove at the position since Jonathan India. He was the only Gator to start all 61 games for Florida this season, slashing .336/.437/.613 with 80 hits, 72 runs, 67 RBIs, 146 total bases, 18 home runs and 19 stolen bases — all of which are team-highs besides batting average and slugging percentage. A five-tool player who can play both spots on the left side of the infield is a steal in the 11th round. Boser had one of the greatest single-year impacts in program history. Another year in Gainesville might have turned him into a Day 1 pick. Bobby Boser before Florida A top-100 prospect out of Florida in the class of 2021, Boser didn't have much of a national profile before college. Boser came into his collegiate career as a two-way player, running the fastball into the low-90s. Former USF associate head coach Bo Durkac said Boser had a "golden arm" at third but offered that he was too aggressive at the plate in the fall of his freshman year. True to form, Boser struggled in his first years at South Florida, with a strikeout rate above 30%. He found hits more consistently as a sophomore and saw an OPS jump from .673 to 1.066. The power started to show, too, with 15 homers in 238 plate appearances. An All-Star summer in the Cape Cod League moved Boser into the conversation of the best non-Power Five position players in the game. Boser was on his way to a monster junior year with 12 home runs in 131 plate appearances, but a hamate bone injury cut his season short by about 20 games. After another summer on the Cape, Boser hit the transfer portal to prove he could stay as productive in the SEC. Bobby Boser at Florida Boser put up career numbers at Florida and etched his name into the history books as the most productive on an injury-riddled Gators team that expected to do more. Had Florida been healthy and made a deeper run in the postseason, Boser is the kind of guy who benefits from the eyes on Omaha at the College World Series. Position versatility is a lost art in the game, and certain front offices cover it as a must-have tool. The 19 stolen bases are another big feather in Boser's cap. A near 20-20 season is rare in college baseball, and Boser probably deserved more than an 11th-round selection. His top moments with the Gators include a three-homer game against Stetson on April 15 and homering in each of the first two games of the Conway Regional. Florida Gators drafted in 2025 Boser is the fourth Gator off the board in the 2025 MLB draft. The Chicago White Sox took shortstop Colby Shelton in the sixth round, the Miami Marlins took right-handed pitcher Jake Clemente in the seventh round and the Chicago Cubs drafted left-handed pitcher Pierce Coppola later on in the seventh round. Florida has seen four or more players drafted in 16 of the last 17 years, and Boser is the 116th draftee under Kevin O'Sullivan — 229th in program history.
