Erasmus faces selection puzzle ahead of Rugby Championship squad announcement

Rassie Erasmus will name his 36-man squad on Tuesday for the upcoming Rugby Championship matches against Australia — and the big question is who will miss out, given the Springboks' current embarrassment of riches.
The head coach has used 48 players over the past four weeks, with few letting themselves down and several newcomers delivering notable performances.
At the weekend, Erasmus' bold gamble on an entirely uncapped front row — Boan Venter, Marnus van der Merwe and Neethling Fouché — paid off handsomely. Cobus Wiese, ironically filling in for his suspended brother Jasper at No 8, impressed in a position that's not his natural home.

Edwill van der Merwe once again underlined his growing reputation, staking a real claim alongside the likes of Kurt-Lee Arendse and Cheslin Kolbe, while Canan Moodie continued his smooth transition into a capable deputy for Jesse Kriel at outside centre.
One clear conclusion Erasmus can draw from this block of matches is that Grant Williams is currently his top-performing scrumhalf. Yet, it was also encouraging to see Faf de Klerk fight his way back into contention, with a feisty and skilful second-half cameo.
Kwagga Smith and Pieter-Steph du Toit continue to be tireless warriors, while Ruan Nortjé's recent displays suggest he has matured into a genuine international-class lock — a development that will please Erasmus and his selectors.
'We are fairly happy, it could've been better,' Erasmus said with typical understatement, after Georgia were brushed aside 55-10.
'What we expected from them was physicality and disruption, and we certainly got that. But I don't think it was a performance over the full 80 minutes from us.
"There were a lot of guys who made a lot of errors today because of how Georgia played — and I don't mean that in a negative way. They disrupt very well.'
Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu had a mixed outing at flyhalf, but Erasmus expressed no concern over the young playmaker's form.

'Sacha is not necessarily our first-choice 10. We've got Manie (Libbok), who is pretty much on song, and when Handré (Pollard) came on, he was pretty solid,' the coach explained.
'If you just look at Sacha's goal kicking — he missed four — but I think he ended well. In the warm-up, he picked up a hip pointer injury, but he still wanted to play.
'I don't know if that was an excuse for how he kicked at poles, but he definitely ran it out.
'We like flyhalves who try things on the field, not just play safely in their little box. And he certainly wasn't one of the guys who made the most errors today. Georgia thrive on spoiling and disrupting, and a lot of guys struggled with that.
'I'm not frustrated with Sacha — it's only his second start for us this year. He's still young compared to our other flyhalves.'
Erasmus confirmed that his Rugby Championship squad will have a more settled look, with experimentation largely shelved for now.
'The Rugby Championship is a step up from Tier Two nations, the Barbarians and the Italy matches,' he said.
The coach added that nine additional players will be placed on standby as injury cover.

Rassie Erasmus reveals big change to Springbok plans
Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus and his management are renowned for their meticulous and carefully-considered planning for each and every part of the season. With the start of the Rugby Championship now just over two weeks away, Erasmus has interestingly revealed he called the team into camp earlier than was initially planned, perhaps indicating that he was not entirely satisfied with what took place during the July internationals. Erasmus admitted that this week's training camp was not originally part of their schedule, but he said it would benefit the team on several fronts. 'These two weeks of camp will give us time to align as coaches, as well as on the conditioning aspects for the players and to take stock from a medical perspective, so it's important in assisting us to get to where we want to be against three good countries in the series.' The Springboks are currently on a four-match winning run so far this season following victories against the Barbarians and an Incoming Series clean-sweep against Italy and Georgia. 'We would have eight weeks of proper preparation before we take the field in the Rugby Championship, and we are pleased with the physicality that Italy and Georgia brought against us in the last few weeks,' Erasmus did clarify. 'We have another three weeks to prepare for the matches against Australia, so we'll be working hard on the training field in the next few weeks.' The Bok coach added: 'We always knew that our first few matches would not be as tough as the Rugby Championship, even though the opposition was competitive and physical, but we are now going up against teams with solid game plans and a different intensity. 'Australia would have also come off the British & Irish Lions Series by the time we face them, so it will be a challenging tournament.' Rugby Championship fixtures: 16 August: SA v Australia – Ellis Park, Johannesburg (17:10) 23 August: SA v Australia – DHL Stadium, Cape Town (17:10) 6 September: New Zealand v SA – Eden Park, Auckland (09:05) 13 September: New Zealand v SA – Sky Stadium, Wellington (09:05) 27 September: SA v Argentina – Kings Park, Durban (17:10) 4 October: Argentina v SA – Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, London (15:00) Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. Springboks: Three stars who could explode this season
The Springboks will kick off their Rugby Championship title defence with a clash against the Wallabies on 16 August, and they will be determined to meet some key targets over the course of the six tournament fixtures. On an individual basis, some huge gains could also be made, and here are three players we believe could emphatically enhance their reputations this season. Cobus Wiese The 28-year-old only just made his Test debut as a substitute against Italy before going on to start his first game against Georgia in the Springboks' last match. However, in that time he has seemingly jumped to the top of the pecking order at No 8 in the absence of other injured players, and also as a result of his brother Jasper's four-game suspension. With size (1.97m, 116kg) on his side along with versatility (he can play at lock and in the back row), it's no surprise the Springbok coaches like what they see in the dynamic forward who really looks set for a breakthrough year. Edwill van der Merwe The flying wing has scored five tries in three Tests, and he already just looks so comfortable in Springbok colours. Boasting similar attributes to the likes of Cheslin Kolbe and Kurt-Lee Arendse, Van der Merwe will know how tough the competition is, but there is no doubt that Rassie Erasmus will likely want to see how he can handle himself against more challenging opposition during the Rugby Championship. It should present a real opportunity for him to make a name for himself. Asenathi Ntlabakanye The big man has done enough to impress the national coaches during the July internationals to retain his place in the squad for the start of the Rugby Championship. With physical attributes that allow him to stand out from the pack, Ntlabakanye possesses all the abilities to become the latest 'cult hero' in Springbok colours. The 26-year-old featured against the Barbarians before making his debut off the bench against Italy, and you can expect him to get more game-time to make his mark during the Rugby Championship. The rugby world should be on high alert. Forwards: Lood de Jager (Wild Knights), Pieter-Steph du Toit (Toyota Verblitz), Jean-Luc du Preez (Bordeaux Begles), Eben Etzebeth (Sharks), Vincent Koch (Sharks), Siya Kolisi (Sharks), Wilco Louw (Vodacom Bulls), Malcolm Marx (Kubota Spears), Bongi Mbonambi (Sharks), Franco Mostert (Honda Heat), Ox Nche (Sharks), Ruan Nortje (Vodacom Bulls), Asenathi Ntlabakanye (Lions), Kwagga Smith (Shizuoka Blue Revs), RG Snyman (Leinster), Marnus van der Merwe (Scarlets), Marco van Staden (Vodacom Bulls), Boan Venter (Edinburgh), Jan-Hendrik Wessels (Vodacom Bulls), Cobus Wiese (Vodacom Bulls). Backs: Kurt-Lee Arendse (Vodacom Bulls), Damian de Allende (Wild Knights), Andre Esterhuizen (Sharks), Aphelele Fassi (Sharks), Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu (Stormers), Ethan Hooker (Sharks), Jesse Kriel (Canon Eagles), Cheslin Kolbe (Tokyo Sungoliath), Willie le Roux (Vodacom Bulls), Manie Libbok (Hanazono Kintetsu Liners), Canan Moodie (Vodacom Bulls), Handre Pollard (Vodacom Bulls), Cobus Reinach (Stormers), Edwill van der Merwe (Sharks), Morne van den Berg (Lions), Grant Williams (Sharks), Damian Willemse (Stormers). Springboks are not less prepared than Australia after Italy, Georgia Tests — Rassie
The Springbok coach said Australia may face tough Lions opponents, but his players train against fellow World Cup winners. Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has defended the preparedness of his charges ahead of the Rugby Championship despite facing weaker opposition than Australia in the build-up. The Springboks play their first two matches of the tournament against the Wallabies, first in Joburg on 16 August and then in Cape Town on 23 August. Speaking to the media during their two-week training camp in Johannesburg, Erasmus said the camp had been extended due to concerns among the coaches. They felt players weren't getting focused training before and during their season openers. He said cutting the squad from his initial 55 at the beginning of the season down to 37 will allow the coaches to give players more one-on-one attention.
