Christopher Nolan Reportedly Shut Down a Major BATMAN Spin-Off Project at Warner Bros. — GeekTyrant
According to The Wall Street Journal, that influence extended to the cancellation of a full-on Robin spin-off series. The show, which reportedly would've explored the early life of Robin, was axed at Nolan's request sometime in the late 2010s.
The report doesn't say much about the show's concept or timeline, only that it was being developed by a separate team of producers. It also doesn't explain why this particular project got Nolan's attention when other Bat-adjacent series like Gotham and Titans were greenlit without issue.
It's possible that the show may have been tying itself too closely to Nolan's universe, something the director was notoriously protective of. After all, Nolan made it clear years ago that The Dark Knight Rises was the end of his story.
Nolan's creative gatekeeping didn't stop there. WSJ also reports that during production on Joker , Nolan intervened when he heard that director Todd Phillips originally planned for Joaquin Phoenix's Joker to carve a permanent smile into his face, mirroring Heath Ledger's iconic version.
According to the report, 'Nolan felt that only his Joker should do that,' and the idea was scrapped. Instead, Joker's final moment leaves Phoenix smearing blood across his face, not slicing it open.
At the time, Nolan still had some clout at WB as he had produced Man of Steel and had a guiding hand in shaping the early direction of the DC Extended Universe. His presence was felt behind the scenes, even as other creatives took center stage. But that dynamic changed when Tenet collided with Warner Bros.' pandemic release strategy, leading to a public split between Nolan and the studio.
While things may have cooled since then, and there's always a chance they'll collaborate again, Nolan has firmly planted his flag at Universal for now.
It would be interesting to find out what WB was planning for this Robin project.

Kevin Costner's ambitious Western is underrated — watch it now on HBO Max (July 25-27)
Several of Warner Bros.' biggest releases of 2025 are streaming on HBO Max. A Minecraft Movie, the third-highest-grossing movie of 2025, and Sinners, Ryan Coogler's critically acclaimed vampiric horror, are occupying the first two spots in the top 10. Beyond the top 10, there are a plethora of underrated movies worthy of your time. Kevin Costner's Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 is much better than the mixed reviews it received at the time of its release. This weekend, give Horizon and these two underrated movies a shot. Recommended Videos We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on HBO Max, and the best movies on Disney+. Music Box: Yacht Rock: A Documentary (2024) Christopher Cross. Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins. Steely Dan. Toto. These five musicians and bands helped pioneer a genre of music that became known as yacht rock. Developed in the late '70s and early '80s, yacht rock is a West Coast sound that infused soulful vocals with easy-listening lyrics. Yacht rock is a combination of soft pop, jazz, R&B, and funk. Yacht rock's popularity exploded in the mid-1980s, but by the end of the decade, it began to lose its stranglehold on pop culture. That's when an unlikely ally — hip hop artists — began sampling yacht rock beats in their songs, which led to a resurgence in the genre. Yacht Rock: A Documentary is an informative exploration into a genre that deserves much more credit for its significant impact on the music industry. Stream Music Box: Yacht Rock: A Documentary on HBO Max. Blue Beetle (2023) Blue Beetle was one of DC's casualties in 2023. James Gunn and Peter Safran, the new heads of DC Studios, clearly wanted the 2023 slate — Shazam 2, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman 2 — to disappear and make way for the new DC Universe. That being said, Blue Beetle displayed the most potential, which is probably why an animated series was greenlit. Cobra Kai's Xolo Maridueña as Jamie Reyes, a recent college graduate who becomes the Blue Beetle after fusing with the Scarab. The Scarab encases Jamie in an armored exoskeleton with superpowers, including flight, strength, and agility. Despite his initial hesitation, Jamie comes to accept his newfound abilities and embraces his new calling. On its surface, Blue Beetle is a superhero adventure, but the movie works best as a grounded family drama thanks to its terrific cast. Stream Blue Beetle on HBO Max. Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 (2024) Kevin Costner has become the butt of a lot of jokes for Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1. Costner personally funded $38 million of the $100 million budget shared by the first two films. His ambition may have gotten the better of him, considering Chapter 1 flopped at the box office, and Warner Bros. removed Chapter 2 from its release calendar. All that being said, I'm glad Horizon exists because there are moments in this film — including the Apache raid and Hayes' confrontation with Caleb — that are pure cinematic magic. A Western about life on the American frontier is in Costner's wheelhouse. Mr. Costner, please sell the rights to Netflix to release the next three chapters. Stream Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 on HBO Max.

Why Sheriff Country Is Filming 2,100 Miles Away From Fire Country — Plus, Episode Count Confirmed
Back in April, Fire Country front man Max Thieriot confirmed for TVLine that the CBS hit's first spinoff, Sheriff Country, would be filming in Toronto — more than 2,000 miles east of Vancouver, where Fire Country's own production is based. As such, any crossovers between the two shows, which will air back-to-back on Friday night this fall, 'will be challenging,' Thieriot admitted, but 'they are still something we plan to do.' More from TVLine Vampire Rom-Com From Ghosts Bosses Lands CBS Pilot Order Big Brother: Unlocked: Which Two Former Houseguests Are Hosting Season 27's Companion Series? Stephen Colbert Gets a Visit From Jimmy Fallon, Jon Stewart and More Late-Night Hosts After Cancellation - Watch In the red carpet video above, Diane Farr, who plays Fire Country's Sharon, affirms it 'definitely' will be difficult to pull off crossovers, seeing as 'we shoot on opposite ends' of Canada — but it won't be 'impossible,' Thieriot insists. 'Nothing's impossible.' (In fact, TVLine recently shared a sneak peek at Farr's first Sheriff Country visit.) We now have a reason for the odd geographical discrepancy between the sister series, which are both set in the fictional Edgewater, Calif. As a guest on the July 22 episode of Michael Rosenbaum's Inside of You podcast, Sheriff Country headliner Morena Baccarin recalled being pitched the role of Sheriff Mickey Fox, who was introduced in an April 2024 episode of Fire Country and eyeballed for a spinoff. 'I said to them, 'This is a no-brainer for me, but I cannot shoot in Vancouver,'' Baccarin explained. 'There's, like, no way that my family survives, with three kids in New York City. [There's no way] that this could work.' Baccarin lives in New York City — a five-hour flight from Vancouver — with husband/onetime Gotham scene partner Ben McKenzie and three young children, including an 11-year-old son from her first marriage. After The Powers That Be split off and 'discussed it amongst themselves,' it was eventually agreed upon to film Sheriff Country in Toronto, which is just an hour-and-change from NYC via airplane, and thus allows Baccarin to return home every weekend. 'I was shocked,' Baccarin admits, 'because you know how these negotiations go.' Baccarin also revealed on the pod that Sheriff Country — which was ordered to series more than a year ago but got held for the 2025-26 TV season — has a 20-episode order for its freshman run. 'I haven't done network TV in a while [since NBC's The Endgame] because… the 20-episode thing is really tough on everybody,' she notes. 'But I'm cautiously optimistic. I'm really excited about the series. 'It's a great premise. It's a great character. I really, truly love the people that I'm working with who are creating the show,' she says. 'Brockheimer TV has been incredible in the process, and it's been smooth sailing.' Want SCOOP on any of the TV shows above? Email InsideLine@ and your question may be answered via Matt's Inside Line! Thrilling and Fun New Trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson's ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER — GeekTyrant
Warner Bros has released the second official trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson's upcoming film One Battle After Another , and it looks like Anderson's most action-driven project yet. The movie promises an intense blend of political intrigue and personal stakes. The story follows Bob Ferguson, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, a former revolutionary on a desperate mission to rescue his daughter after she's arrested. The official logline reads: 'When their evil enemy resurfaces after 16 years, a group of ex-revolutionaries reunites to rescue one of their own's daughter.' The movie is inspired by Thomas Pynchon's postmodern novel Vineland , and it feels like a gripping mix of Anderson's meticulous character work and explosive, large-scale action. The cast includes Regina Hall, Sean Penn, Alana Haim, Teyana Taylor, Wood Harris, Benicio del Toro as 'Sensei,' Shayna McHayle, and Chase Infiniti as Ferguson's daughter. The new trailer teases more character dynamics and escalating tension, all leading toward a high-stakes showdown between Bob and the feds. As one might expect from PTA, the visuals are rich with grit and atmosphere, and the tone hints at a slow-burn thriller that explodes into chaos when the moment comes. Watch the trailer below and get ready for what is sure to be a great film. One Battle After Another when it's released in theaters on September 26th.
