Grizzlies coach Tuomas Iisalo provides update on Jaylen Wells after scary fall vs. Hornets
Memphis Grizzlies rookie Jaylen Wells was taken to a hospital on Tuesday after a hard fall in a 124-100 win over the Charlotte Hornets at the Spectrum Center.
The incident occurred after Wells appeared to be undercut by Hornets guard KJ Simpson on a dunk attempt late in the second quarter. The game was delayed by about 20 minutes as the Grizzlies' training staff and EMTs tended to Wells, who was taken off the court on a stretcher.
After Wells left the arena in an ambulance, the game resumed, and Simpson was issued a Flagrant-2 foul, resulting in his ejection. Wells is awake, alert and moving his extremities.
"It puts everything into perspective," Grizzlies interim coach Tuomas Iisalo said. "I mean, seeing that situation and seeing Jaylen there, (it was) a tough situation for everybody. He is an incredibly tough kid and had a great season. He is in all of our thoughts, and luckily, he is moving all of his extremities. Unfortunately, he has a broken wrist, but he is in our thoughts. He is a tough kid and will have a great recovery."
Wells is averaging 10.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists on 35.2% shooting from 3-point range in 79 appearances with the Grizzlies. He is fourth in the rookie class in total scoring (823 points) and was the Western Conference Rookie of the Month in October and November.
The 39th pick had appeared in every game for the Grizzlies entering play on Tuesday. He became a full-time starter for former head coach Taylor Jenkins in their sixth game of the season and remained in that role after emerging as a key figure in the frontcourt.
"The only thing we can do is just pray for Jaylen Wells," Hornets forward Miles Bridges said. "He is a great guy. I've talked to him a couple of times. He seems like a great kid. It was very unfortunate what happened to him. I know KJ is not a dirty guy, so it was just an unfortunate situation. I heard things are going good for him and my prayers are up for him."
Wells was selected to the Rising Stars Game at NBA All-Star Weekend in February and was among the front-runners to win Rookie of the Year for much of the season. He will finish the season as the only second-round pick averaging at least 10 points per game.

Ichiro hilariously needles lone writer who left him off Hall of Fame ballot
Ichiro has a Hall of Fame mind and on off the field. The long-time Seattle Mariner didn't hold back during his Hall of Fame acceptance speech on Sunday, calling out the lone Baseball Writers' Association voter who failed to include him on his or her ballot, despite his historic career achievements. 'Three‑thousand hits or 262 hits in one season are achievements recognized by the writers. Well, all but one of you. And by the way, the offer for that writer to have dinner at my home has now expired,' Ichiro said to a roaring Cooperstown crowd. Getty Images Ichiro headlined the 2025 class, sharing the Cooperstown stage with CC Sabathia and elite reliever Billy Wagner, while legendary players Dick Allen and Dave Parker were inducted posthumously. Ichiro was selected on his first ballot with a sweeping 99.7 percent of the vote share, collecting 393 of 394 votes. The achievement also makes Ichiro the first Asian-born Hall of Fame inductee. Over 19 MLB seasons, Ichiro racked up 3,089 major league hits with a career batting average of a blistering .311, as well as 509 stolen bases, 10 Gold Gloves, three Silver Slugger awards, and two batting titles. Ichiro's single-season record of 262 hits in 2004 still stands to this day. He also reached 10 consecutive All-Star games to begin his career, an MLB record. As of Ichiro's speech, the writer who left him off the ballot, keeping him from becoming the second unanimous first ballot Hall of Famer, has remained anonymous. Mariano Rivera received a perfect 425 of 425 votes for his initial Hall of Fame bid in 2019. Ichiro's 99.7 percent ties Derek Jeter for second place.

The ‘realistic' timeline for Caitlin Clark's injury return
It seems that the Fever will not have Caitlin Clark back on the court for a few more weeks, according to an ESPN report. The network's hoops reporter Holly Rowe said during a report on Sunday's nationally televised broadcast of the Fever-Sky game that the third week in August could provide the best circumstances for the WNBA superstar to return. Clark has dealt with several injury issues this season, most recently suffering a right groin injury on July 15 against the Sun, which was the last game she has played in. '[Clark] did see a specialist last week and no additional injury was found in that exam and scans. Stephanie White did tell us that they will be even more cautious in their approach to her return to play this time,' Rowe said on air. 'Last time when she came back from injury, she didn't get any practice time [or] any time to ramp up her conditioning. This time, they're going to make sure she has time and practices to get rhythm and time with her teammates. 3 Injured Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) looks on from the bench during the first half of a basketball game against the Chicago Sky at United Center on July 27. Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images 'As you look at their schedule, the third week in August provides a few more practice days where that seems like it's realistic. While she does remain day to day, that's seems like a better timetable for a possible Caitlin Clark return.' Sunday was the fourth straight game the 2024 Rookie of the Year has missed due to injury and her 13th game this season that an ailment has kept her off the court. While Clark didn't play, she was on hand for the game, which is an often anticipated event when the Clark-led Fever and Angel Reese's Sky square off against one another. Video from inside the arena showed Clark mobbed by fans looking for autographs before the game and the women's basketball talent signing for every fan. 3 Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) and guard Lexie Hull (10) react on the bench during the first half of a basketball game against the Chicago Sky at United Center.
