Madras HC clears decks for NEET result declaration
In their petitions, S Sai Priya and 15 other students also sought a direction to the NTA to conduct re-examination for candidates, who had experienced power outages at four centres in Chennai, where they appeared for the examination.
Dismissing the petitions, Justice C Kumarappan said, "In the instant cases, I do not find any mala fides on the part of the respondents. Furthermore, all over India, there were about 22 lakhs students have participated in the NEET 2025 examination."
Against this background, if any re-examination is permitted on trivial grounds, the same would seriously affect the level playing field of more than two million candidates. Hence, the court does not find any merit in these writ petitions.
In an interim order, a vacation judge had on May 17 restrained NTA from releasing the results of NEET-2025 due to alleged difficulties faced by a group of students because of power outage at four examination centres.
In his order, Justice Kumarappan said "If we look at the contention of the petitioners, the main ground urged by them is that on account of power outage, there was poor light in the Centres, which caused a distracting environment, and hampered the candidates' ability to concentrate and to perform at their best".
It was pertinent to mention here that the power outage happened due to sudden rain and storm. As rightly contended by the Additional Solicitor General, the examination was conducted during day time between 2.00 PM to 5.00 PM, where there was a natural ambient light, the judge added.
When the authority , after field verification and with the scientific method, had arrived at a reasonable conclusion that there are no grounds for re-examination, the same needs to be accepted, unless the said report is tainted with mala fides", the judge added.

Punjab plans new law to ban tree felling in cities, seeks mandatory replanting
CHANDIGARH: In order to maintain green cover for ensuring ecological balance and to regulate the felling and replanting of trees, the Punjab government has come up with the tree act, The Punjab Protection of Trees Act, 2025. Under the proposed legislation, no one will be allowed to cut trees in urban areas without permission. Every jurisdiction in the state will have a designated 'tree officer' whose approval will be mandatory before a tree is felled. Sources said that the state forest and wildlife department has prepared the draft and sent it to various departments for comments. Once feedback is received, it will be sent to the state cabinet for final approval and subsequent notification. As per the proposed act, a copy of which is with this newspaper, the objective is 'to maintain green cover for ensuring ecological balance besides preventing pollution of environment and conserving the soil.' It thus seeks to regulate the felling and replanting of trees in Punjab. The act will be applicable to all municipal bodies across Punjab. Rural areas will be exempted as agroforestry is carried out in villages, said sources. According to the act, only a dead tree or one which has fallen without the aid of human agency in any urban area will be permitted to be cut. Three officers will be appointed by the state government from either the local bodies department or any other department, and they will be responsible for granting permission to individuals or government agencies seeking to fell trees. The officer must give a decision on an application within 30 days, and within seven days for a dead tree. The officer must record the reasons for the decision after conducting an inquiry and, if they find the tree poses a danger to a person or property, the permission cannot be refused. The act states that any person granted permission to cut a tree shall be bound to plant and tend two trees in lieu of every tree cut, preferably in the same area. If land is not available, the tree officer may allow trees to be planted elsewhere or permit the applicant to deposit money in the state treasury, but reasons for this must be recorded in writing.

NTA declares SWAYAM January 2025 semester exam result held in hybrid mode
SWAYAM January 2025 Result: The NTA on July 25 announced the Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds (SWAYAM) January 2025 semester exam results. The SWAYAM January 2025 result of the exams held in hybrid mode can be checked and downloaded from the NTA website – As per NTA data, the hybrid-mode exams covered 65 courses, with 2,226 candidates registered and 1,864 candidates appearing for the exams. The announcement follows an earlier declaration on June 27, 2025, regarding results for 524 computer-based test (CBT) courses. The SWAYAM platform facilitates hosting of courses, taught in classrooms from Class 9 till postgraduation, to be accessed by anyone, anywhere at any time. All the courses are interactive and available free of cost to learners.
