Stellantis: The automaker's history, legacy
Explore the history of Stellantis, the automotive giant formed in 2021 through the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA Group.
Fewer than 2,000 electric Dodge Charger Daytonas sold in the United States in the first three months of 2025.
Dodge will launch gas-powered Chargers later this year.
Dodge is pulling the plug, so to speak, on its base model electric Charger Daytona, the R/T, as it deals with slow sales, but don't expect what appears to be a limited-edition run of vehicles to turn into collector's items, according to a key industry watcher.
'Rarity does not make a collectible. You need to have demand for it,' said Sam Fiorani, vice president of global vehicle forecasting for AutoForecast Solutions. 'You can't presume that this will be a Charger Daytona of 1970. They couldn't sell those originally and years later they were collectible.'
Fiorani said it's risky to bet on a car of today becoming something that brings big dollars in the years to come, even when the numbers of those made and sold are relatively small.
Still, Dodge will continue to offer the more powerful and expensive electric Charger Daytona Scat Pack for the upcoming model year, even as it prepares to launch several gas-powered versions.
While it's not clear how many Dodge Charger Daytonas will be produced this year, so far the sales picture is showing a fairly light impact. Electric Charger sales – the company did not distinguish between versions – for the first three months of this year were at 1,947. Granted, they were just beginning to arrive in showrooms in January after months of delays.
However, the automaker likely had higher hopes. Fiorani noted that he'd recently driven by a Dodge dealership and saw a row of Chargers waiting to be sold.
In a statement, Dodge CEO Matt McAlear said 'production of the Dodge Charger Daytona R/T is postponed for the 2026 model year as we continue to assess the effects of U.S. tariff policies. The Charger's flexible, multi-energy STLA Large platform allows us to focus on the Charger Daytona Scat Pack's performance as the world's quickest and most powerful muscle car, add the new four-door model to the Charger mix for the 2026 model year and lean into the new Charger SIXPACK models that will launch in the second half of the year.'
Sixpack refers to the engine, the inline-six Hurricane, which will come in 550-horsepower or 420-horsepower variants.
The current electric Scat Pack promises a peak power base of 630 horsepower with a limited push-button burst to 670 horsepower called the Power Shot. The Dodge website lists the Scat Pack all-wheel drive with a starting price of $73,985, excluding destination charge.
Adding gas-powered versions to the lineup is not a surprise, as Dodge had previously said that was the plan. However, the decision, reported earlier by MoparInsiders.com, to end the electric R/T's run so soon does highlight how the market has changed, both in terms of the slower adoption of electric vehicles and President Donald Trump's embrace of tariffs. The Charger Daytona is assembled at the Windsor Assembly Plant in Ontario, but the batteries initially were to come from South Korea.
Fiorani offered some perspective on the potential tariff impact, however.
'Everybody is leaning on tariffs for every change in production or sales, whether real or not,' he said.
Market realities are, however, what they are.
'The idea that an internal combustion engine version would hit the market better at the moment is a strong one,' according to Fiorani. 'Buyers haven't warmed up to EVs as a performance vehicle yet, especially since every EV is a performance model now.'
Fiorani noted also that the company's planned shift in production volume toward the gas-powered Charger would also take the focus off the less expensive EV version – the R/T was listed with a starting price of $59,595, not counting destination.
'(They) kind of want to focus on the vehicle that will make money versus the entry-level models that will sell on price,' Fiorani said.
New car prices surge: Car-buying frenzy continues, pushing new vehicle prices higher
The moves for Dodge follow news that Ram is also adjusting its electric plans. Crain's Detroit Business, citing a memo to suppliers, reported this week that the electric Ram 1500 REV would be delayed until summer 2027, a year later than what the automaker told the Free Press in January, and the extended range Ramcharger is being pushed from later this year to early next year.
The company, in a statement provided by spokesman Nick Cappa, cited "slowing consumer demand for half-ton" battery electric pickups and noted that "we also are extending the quality validation period for the Range Extended Ram to support a successful launch and the highest build quality."

Vauxhall owner risks exclusion from Labour electric car scheme

The owner of Vauxhall risks being excluded from Labour's electric vehicle (EV) grant scheme over its reliance on Polish factories. Stellantis, which owns brands including Peugeot, Citroën and Fiat, is among several car manufacturers scrambling to demonstrate their eco-credentials in a bid to qualify for new government subsidies. But it is understood some of the company's cars may miss out on £3,750 grants offered by ministers because they are made in Poland and risk falling foul of net zero rules. Under the scheme, vehicles put forward by manufacturers will be scored based on how green their production processes are. Those with the highest scores risk being excluded or only receiving a smaller payment of £1,500. Carmakers must also prove they are signed up to 'science-based targets' to cut their carbon emissions, in line with net zero targets. Ministers have already warned that Chinese-made cars are likely to be blocked from receiving grants for these reasons. China is the world's biggest carbon dioxide emitter, largely because of its huge consumption of coal for power generation. But car industry insiders have warned the scheme's rules may also create a headache for Western manufacturers with operations in Poland because of the European country's similarly high dependence on coal. Like China, roughly 60pc of Poland's electricity is generated by burning the fuel. Both countries generate about 7.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide per capita overall, according to the International Energy Agency. The Government's grant scheme will assess carmakers on where they assemble EVs as well as where their EV batteries are produced. A 30pc weighting will be given to the former and a 70pc weighting to the latter, according to a briefing seen by The Telegraph. It means some carmakers – including Stellantis – may be penalised for their dependence on Poland, which has attracted huge investment from the car industry and is also Europe's biggest supplier of batteries. Electric models made by Stellantis at its plant in Tychy, in southern Poland, include the Jeep Avenger, Fiat 600e, Alfa Romeo Junior Elettrica and the Abarth 600e. Until earlier this year, the company also made the Leapmotor T03 there through a joint venture. It is not clear where Stellantis sources batteries for the cars made in Tychy but in addition to using its own battery joint venture in France, the company is understood to rely on a supplier based in China as well. Several other major car companies also rely on China for supplies, as well as on an LG Energy Solutions plant based in Wrocław, Poland, which is Europe's biggest battery factory. Ginny Buckley, chief executive of an electric car advice service, said: 'Poland may be Europe's EV battery powerhouse – second only to China globally – but its coal-heavy energy mix could mean its batteries will be excluded from the new electric car grants, as under the Government's strict environmental criteria only EVs with low-carbon supply chains qualify. 'It's a move that risks punishing carmakers working to establish European supply chains and limiting consumer choice.' Uncertainty about whether certain cars will qualify for Britain's EV grant scheme has prompted complaints from car industry executives, who say it has made it harder to plan their marketing strategies for August and September. Mike Hawes, chief executive of the Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders, warned this week that manufacturers had been left trying to peer through 'a fog'. Meanwhile, Chinese manufacturers such as BYD have already started slashing their UK car prices, in a defensive measure to compensate for their exclusion. Dan Caesar, chief executive of campaign group Electric Vehicles UK, said: 'Some [carmakers] know that they're unlikely to be eligible and are proactively discounting ahead of time, while those that are applying will not be able to act as immediately.' A Whitehall source acknowledged the grant scheme rules could block some cars made by Western manufacturers but cautioned that officials could not say for certain until manufacturers applied to join the scheme. 'We want as many models as possible to qualify for these grants, but the scheme has been intentionally designed to incentivise the greenest possible manufacturing,' they said. 'There will be ways that companies that manufacture in different places, and through different means, can work with us to ensure they are still included.' A Stellantis spokesman said: 'Stellantis welcomes the Government's support to increase the sales of more affordable electric vehicles. 'This is something that we have been asking for. We are making the necessary grant applications for customers of our electric vehicles and are confident that a wide range of these, manufactured in our plants in the UK and Western Europe, will be eligible.' Stellantis Stock (STLA) Powers Forward as Tesla's Chinese Challenge Intensifies

Shares in auto maker Stellantis (STLA) raced higher today as rival Tesla (TSLA) was handed another huge roadblock in the Chinese EV market. The Stellantis leap came on reports that Hangzhou-based EV maker Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology is launching a battery-powered sedan in mainland China. Leap Lower The B01, a midsize sedan, offers features similar to Tesla's Model 3 but reportedly at less than half the price at 89,800 yuan. According to a report in the South China Morning Post, it is understood that Leapmotor, which is backed by Stellantis, also plans to launch the car in global markets at a yet-to-be-decided date. Deliveries to mainland Chinese customers will reportedly begin this month and include five variants with driving ranges from 430 kilometers to 650 kilometers. The top-end model is priced at 119,800 yuan, the report said. Meanwhile, a Tesla-made Model 3 is priced from 235,500 yuan to 339,500 yuan. Tesla's China sales have suffered this year, falling month after month, as it suffered more intense competition from domestic rivals such as BYD (BYDDY). That's important given that a fifth of Tesla revenues come from China – see below. Stellantis Charge China's car market has also been dragged into a price war as companies compete to win over consumers who, hit by a sluggish economy, are reluctant to spend. However, Tesla recorded a 0.8% increase in June, delivering 71,599 units and breaking an eight-month losing streak. Meanwhile, deliveries of Tesla's China-made Model 3 and Model Y autos surged 16.1% compared to May. These figures include vehicles sold both within China and exported to other markets. Tesla is hoping for further growth from its revamped Model Y car. The six-seat sports utility vehicle could be launched in the fall. Reports suggest that the new Model Y will be larger than the current five-seat version and will have a top speed of 201 kilometers an hour. As for Stellantis, known for traditional car brands such as Chrysler, it keeps charging forward in the electric space. It has been reported that starting this September, some South African Stellantis dealers will sell Leapmotor electric vehicles, starting with the C10 SUV. More models are set to follow over the course of 2025 and into 2026. It's much needed if it wants to keep making inroads into the likes of Tesla both in China and elsewhere. As we see below it has underperformed Tesla substantially over the last 12 months.
