2025 Kentucky Derby odds: Betting, full field, expert analysis, jockeys, trainers, and fun facts
Legendary trainer Bob Baffert's return to the Kentucky Derby tops the list. Back at Churchill Downs for the first time in three years following his suspension due to a failed post-race drug test involving his horse, Medina Spirit, after the 2021 Kentucky Derby, Baffert returns with multiple entries (Citizen Bull, Madaket Road, Rodriguez).
Journalism is the current favorite followed by Sovereignty and Sandman, but the field features speed beyond those three thoroughbreds. Keep in mind, the favorite has won the Kentucky Derby just under 35% of the time since 1908 (40 times). In fact, the favorite has failed to secure a victory the last five years.
Because the Run for the Roses remains a race where surprises are common, and longshots often emerge victorious, lets dive into the field for 2025.
NBC Sports' horse racing analyst Drew Dinsick (@whale_capper) offers his thoughts on the contenders and once post positions are drawn on April 26, he will be back offering his favorite plays.
The following is a snapshot of each horse in the field including their lineage, jockey, trainer, and career highlights on their path to the 151st Kentucky Derby.

An unlikely record was broken in the Champions League on Tuesday night 😳
Fun derby. This Tuesday evening, the first leg matches of the third qualifying round of the 2025-26 Champions League take place. Before the clash between Nice and Benfica on Wednesday, on Tuesday, you can enjoy a delicious Malmö - Copenhagen! A Swedish team facing a Danish team... and yet, it's a real derby! In fact, Malmö is located in the far southwest of Sweden, while Copenhagen is located in the east of Denmark. Result? The two cities are separated by only... 28 kilometers! And hold on to your seat: this is the shortest distance in Champions League history for a match between two teams from different countries! Crazy, right? 😊 This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. You can read the original version in 🇫🇷 here. 📸 ANDREAS HILLERGREN/TT - Andreas Hillergren

'He Was Ready': Tomasello Gets Perfect Trip In Ky Downs Preview Nashville Derby
'He Was Ready': Tomasello Gets Perfect Trip In Ky Downs Preview Nashville Derby originally appeared on Paulick Report. Ironhorse Racing Stable and T-N-T Equine Holding's Tomasello tracked just off the pace before pouncing in midstretch and drawing clear by 1½ lengths to win Saturday's $250,000 Ky Downs Preview Nashville Derby at Ellis Park. Trained by Mark Casse and ridden by Fernando De La Cruz, Tomasello completed 1 1/8 miles in 1:47.13 over firm turf. After a clean break, Tomasello sat a perfect trip behind early leader Yinzer, who set a composed pace of :24.31 for a quarter-mile and :49.62 through the opening half-mile. The field of eight remained largely unchanged until the far turn, when Tomasello ranged up to challenge. He surged past Yinzer in midstretch and drew away toward the wire. Yinzer held second, with Siesta Key closing for third. 'I put him in the position he liked to be,' De La Cruz said. 'He took me into the stretch and when it was time to go, he was ready.' Sent off at his morning line odds of 9-2, Tomasello returned $11.56. Tomasello, a 3-year-old son of Authentic out of the War Front mare Dakota Queen, was bred in Kentucky by Barry Becker and Judith Becker. He now boasts three wins from seven starts. The victory was worth $150,175 and increased his earnings to $349,966. Emergence finished fourth, followed by Coalmoon, Esmark, Mesero and 5-2 favorite Native Runner. With the win, Tomasello earned an automatic berth to the Nashville Derby (G3), held on Saturday, Aug. 30 at Kentucky Downs. Umberto Rispoli: 'Triple Crown Campaign Was Amazing'
Umberto Rispoli: 'Triple Crown Campaign Was Amazing' originally appeared on Paulick Report. Jockey Umberto Rispoli is no stranger to success. He won 15 graded stakes in 2024, has collected numerous riding championships and records back in his home country of Italy and is one of the most respected grass riders in this country. But nothing has compared to the ride he's been on the past couple of months. Rispoli is the regular jockey for Journalism, runner-up to Sovereignty in the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1) and winner of the Preakness (G1) and Haskell (G1) at Monmouth Park. 'Winning a classic race is the goal of every jockey every year,' Rispoli said, 'and trying to find a horse like Journalism is the key. Every year you wish to get a horse like him.' He calls the victory in the Preakness the biggest achievement of his career, which has taken him all around the world. From Italy he moved to France. He's also ridden in England, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong before coming to the United States in 2020. Through it all, he's ridden some quality racehorses, but now there's a new name at the top of the Rispoli Top Ten list. 'I have to put him on the top,' he says of Journalism. 'It was a big achievement for me to be a favorite in the Kentucky Derby and then the favorite in the Belmont against Sovereignty. The whole journey of the Triple Crown campaign was amazing. Plus you put the Haskell in there. So far it's been a wonderful season.' What makes the Rispoli/Journalism union different from his other successful partnerships is that most of that success has come on the turf. 'It's the first time I have found a real good dirt horse,' Rispoli claims. 'I worked him at Del Mar last summer and then after his first start we saw something different in him. We knew he was a two-turn horse, no doubt about it.' Rispoli has three winners so far at Del Mar, a noticeable drop-off from past year's production but with good reason. He missed the first Saturday of the meet when he traveled back east to ride Journalism at Monmouth Park and he's gone again this weekend. 'So far it's been a slow Del Mar for me, which I would say is unusual,' Rispoli said. 'When you're not here, it costs you some rides. But if that affords you the chance to ride horses like Journalism or Johannes, you do it.' Rispoli was in New York Saturday to ride Johannes in the Fourstardave (G1) at Saratoga. With all the traveling he's been doing lately, he's definitely piling-up the frequent flyer miles. 'I like that,' Rispoli insists. 'When I was in Europe I used to travel in a car for five hours just to ride one horse and then come back. When you have a day to fly around and ride good horses it gives you motivation.' Even with all this recent success, Umberto says he's not one to rest on his laurels. 'Once you win a big race you just forget about it and move on,' Rispoli said. 'Enjoy the day, enjoy the moment but there are other big races out there to win. If I had a bad day yesterday, I'm more hungry than ever.' Coming as close as he did to winning the Kentucky Derby like he did this year only intensifies that hunger in his bid to win the biggest prize in horse racing. 'You need a good horse and a barn that supports you,' Rispoli believes. 'Irad (Ortiz Jr.) and Flavien (Prat) on the East Coast ride for specific trainers. Here, Juan (Hernandez) is riding a lot for Bob (Baffert). You need those stables that support you from the beginning when the 2-year-olds comes around.' Rispoli has gained the confidence of trainer Michael McCarthy and owner Aron Wellman of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and he has every intention of rewarding that confidence all the way to the Breeders' Cup this fall at Del Mar.
