Cambodia records 7th human case of H5N1 bird flu in 2025

PHNOM PENH: A 41-year-old woman from northwestern Cambodia's Siem Reap province has been confirmed for H5N1 human avian influenza, raising the number of cases to seven so far this year, the Ministry of Health said in a statement Monday (June 23) night.
"A laboratory result from the National Institute of Public Health showed on June 23 that the woman was positive for H5N1 virus," the statement said.
"The patient has the symptoms of fever, cough, and dyspnea, and she is currently in critical condition," it added. (Dyspnea is difficulty in breathing.)
According to queries, there were sick and dead chickens at the patient's home and her neighbour's homes, and the patient had been in contact with sick and dead chickens and cooked them for food five days before she felt ill.
Health authorities are looking into the source of the infection and are examining any suspected cases or people who have been in contact with the victim in order to prevent an outbreak in the community.
Tamiflu (oseltamivir), an antiviral drug to prevent the bird flu from spreading, was also given out to people who had direct contact with the patient, the statement said.
So far this year, the kingdom recorded a total of seven human cases of H5N1 bird flu, with five deaths.
From 2003 to date, there were 79 cases of human infection with H5N1 influenza, including 48 deaths in the Southeast Asian country, according to the ministry. - Xinhua

He said the matter has finally gained serious attention at the federal level, with preliminary plans for QEH I now underway following a meeting earlier this year between Sabah's Minister of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship cum Luyang assemblyman Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe, and Health Minister Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad. 'Phoong met with the Federal Health Minister on behalf of the state government to raise this issue, and the response has been positive and encouraging. 'We will continue to push for practical solutions to ensure better access to essential healthcare facilities for the public,' he said. Speaking at the 'Program War on Sugar Kota Kinabalu' community health programme held at the Foh Sang multi-storey car park in Luyang on Saturday, Chan noted that the opening of the new parking facility has already helped ease traffic congestion and parking difficulties in the surrounding neighbourhood. 'We are fully aware that the people of Kota Kinabalu have long hoped for improved parking facilities, especially at the city's two main hospitals – Queen Elizabeth Hospital I (QEH I) and Queen Elizabeth Hospital II (QEH II),' he added. Chan, who also serves as Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities, further revealed that a mixed-use development project is in the pipeline near QEH II. The upcoming development, which will integrate medical and commercial components, is expected to provide approximately 1,500 parking bays – helping to further alleviate parking and traffic concerns in the area. Separately, Chan highlighted the findings of the 2024 National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS), which reported that 63% of Malaysian adolescents and 43% of adults consume excessive amounts of free sugar daily – exceeding the World Health Organization's recommendation of no more than 7.5 teaspoons per day. 'This is a worrying trend. Excessive sugar intake is linked to a host of non-communicable diseases such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease – all of which place a heavy burden on the country's healthcare system,' he warned. In response, his parliamentary office partnered with the Sabah State Health Department to organise Saturday's health outreach event, combining a health exhibition, free screenings, sugar reduction awareness, and various community service booths to promote healthier lifestyle habits. He noted that the War on Sugar campaign is part of a nationwide initiative by the Ministry of Health to promote healthy eating, raise awareness about the dangers of excessive sugar consumption, and provide essential health services such as screenings and vaccinations. On a lighter note, Chan shared that he, too, has adopted a healthier diet by switching to sugar-free beverages, opting for 'kopi-o kosong' or Americano. The event was also attended by Phoong, Kota Kinabalu Mayor Datuk Seri Sabin Samitah, as well as representatives from the Kota Kinabalu City Hall, Royal Malaysia Police and the Sabah State Health Department.

Brunei ministry of health presents long service medals to staff

The event took place at the building of the Ministry of Health. Haji Mohammad Isham Jaafar, the minister of health, handed over the long service medals to the recipients. Brunei is a major oil and natural gas producer in Southeast Asia. Its substantial energy exports have generated relatively high per capita income for the nation and funds for a universal free healthcare system.

62 killed in Israeli strikes, including 10 waiting for aid in Gaza
GAZA CITY: Gaza's civil defence agency said that Israeli forces killed at least 62 people on Friday, including 10 who were waiting for aid in the war-ravaged Palestinian territory. The reported killing of people seeking aid marks the latest in a string of deadly incidents near aid sites in Gaza, where a US- and Israeli-backed foundation has largely replaced established humanitarian organisations. Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP that 62 Palestinians had been killed Friday by Israeli strikes or fire across the Palestinian territory. When asked by AFP for comment, the Israeli military said it was looking into the incidents, and denied its troops fired in one of the locations in central Gaza where rescuers said one aid seeker was killed. Bassal told AFP that six people were killed in southern Gaza near one of the distribution sites operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), and one more in a separate incident in the centre of the territory, where the army denied shooting "at all." Another three people were killed by a strike while waiting for aid southwest of Gaza City, Bassal said. The health ministry in the Hamas-run territory says that since late May, more than 500 people have been killed near aid centres while seeking scarce supplies. GHF has denied that fatal shootings have occurred in the immediate vicinity of its aid points. Medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF) on Friday slammed the GHF relief effort, calling it "slaughter masquerading as humanitarian aid." Hamas's Oct 7, 2023 attack on Israel that sparked the Gaza war resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.
