Freezed since 2012, teacher hiring must restart: Former ZP member

Nagpur: As almost 70 teachers from Nagpur's Zilla Parishad (ZP) schools retired last week, it was a grim reminder for the local body education system where teacher hiring has been stopped since 2012. Each year, the retirees keep moving out, but no fresh full-time staff is being hired, say former officials. In the interim, excess teachers were shuffled across schools to fill gaps. Sharad Bhandarkar, former Kendra Pramukh who oversaw a cluster of ZP schools in Nagpur, said, "Slowly over the next decade or so, the full-time teacher strength would have dwindled drastically. The govt must restart hiring of teachers. Sixty-eight of them retired last week, and this trend continues." There are around 6,000 teachers in ZP schools, but these units face a problem of low enrolment. There are ZP schools where fewer than 20 students study, which then impacts the number of teachers who can be assigned to the school. This is because the state govt has a pupil-teacher ratio, popularly called PTR, and that dictates the hiring dynamics. Education office sources suggest that falling student enrolment — partly due to migration towards English-medium institutions — has also affected staff numbers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cervecería Nacional CFD: Calcula cuánto podrías ganar invirtiendo solo $100 Empieza a invertir Inscríbete ahora Undo But former ZP member, Avantika Lekurwale, who headed the Women and Child Welfare Committee, said students will flock to schools if quality education is provided. She said, "Many Marathi-medium schools in Nagpur are thriving because they offer strong learning outcomes. Quality of education in schools is the key to retaining students as already several schools have shifted to semi-English instruction, proving that medium is not the core concern. For the last 12 years, not a single teacher was hired, and we have almost 700 vacancies." To partially address this, the govt has begun hiring contract teachers, Lekurwale said. KRS dam reaches full capacity in June for first time

Mandya: In a historic first, KRS dam across Cauvery River has reached its maximum level of 124.8 feet early this monsoon season in June. Usually, the dam, the lifeline of the Old Mysore region, attains the maximum level either in July or August when monsoon peaks. Marking this rare event of the dam constructed in 1931, chief minister Siddaramaiah will offer Bagina to Cauvery River on Monday, becoming the first CM to do so in June. During the Bagina ceremony, the CM will perform a ritual at 11.30am, during the auspicious Abhijit Muhurta. Vedic scholar Bhanuprakash Sharma will lead the religious proceedings. A total of 40 Bagina sets have been prepared for the event. Each set includes a ceremonial pot filled with navadhanya (nine grains), turmeric, vermilion, a saree, and bangles — traditional offerings made to the river goddess as a symbol of gratitude and reverence. Dam gets a facelift In view of this landmark occasion, the Cauvery Neeravari Nigama Limited has undertaken elaborate preparations. The dam site is being whitewashed, and Kannada flags now flutter at the dam site. Authorities should take steps to fill lakes, canals: Farmers With KRS dam reaching full capacity unusually early this year, local farmers have expressed joy but also voiced concerns. While they welcomed the early availability of water, they urged the govt to exercise caution when releasing water to Tamil Nadu. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo Farmers emphasised that the early inflow provides an opportunity to begin agricultural activities ahead of schedule. However, they stressed the need for proactive measures to ensure local water security by filling all lakes and canals across the district. Local farmer Nanjundegowda said it is crucial that the authorities prioritise filling waterbodies before releasing water to Tamil Nadu to avoid future distress and ensure sustainable farming. Over 3,000 residents get e-khata at Bengaluru mega mela

Bengaluru: More than 3,000 residents flocked to the Sahakaranagar playground in Byatarayanapura assembly constituency Sunday for the mega e-khata mela that surpassed expectations. Originally slated to end by 2pm, the event has now been extended until 8pm on Monday, due to the sheer volume of applicants. Bengaluru development minister DK Shivakumar inaugurated the door-to-door distribution drive by handing over draft e-khatas to local households. Urging residents to either collect their documents online or attend the mela, he said: "Final e-khatas will be delivered to homes within 100 days. Please verify details and complete the process at the earliest." He also announced plans to replicate such mega camps across other zones. The event primarily attracted citizens who struggled with online applications owing to limited digital literacy or time constraints. With e-khata mandatory from July 1 for any property registration, sale, or transfer in Bengaluru, the mela got an overwhelming response. Of the 1.8 lakh properties in Byatarayanapura, over 51,000 have received final e-khatas. The BBMP's e-khata system recently received the National e-Governance Gold Award (2024–25), with over 5.3 lakh final e-khatas already issued out of 25 lakh properties. MLA Krishna Byre Gowda said: "Many still think getting an e-khata is hard or unnecessary. But if 5 lakh people have managed, so can others. We'll continue the mela on Monday too." Residents were effusive in their praise. "I came at 7.30am, and by 11pm, my e-khata was ready," said Anil Kumar. Others like Ramalingam, an auto driver, highlighted how such one-stop events help those unable to navigate the online system or avoid bribes. "We've tried for months. Today, we got it in three hours," he said. Over 4k tokens issued, 1,679 processed and 677 final e-khatas were given on spot on the first day.
