Three Global Strike Security Company employees arrested for allegedly defrauding Anglo American Platinum of R6.3 million have been granted bail of R30,000 each.
Former Director Wanda van Zyl, 57, and two payroll administrators, Monidue Nel, 52, and Ruan van Zyl, 23, were nabbed by the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (known as the Hawks)
The trio appeared briefly in the Mahwelereng Magistrate's Court on May 19, facing 26 counts of fraud.
'The accused were granted bail of R30 000 each,' Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Lethunya Mmuroa said.
The case was postponed to June 13, 2025, for further police investigation.
The trio is accused of submitting fraudulent invoices between December 20, 2018, and September 20, 2021.
Explaining the case, Mmuroa said the trio allegedly submitted fraudulent invoices and claimed funds to Anglo-American Platinum for security services that were never rendered.
Anglo American Platinum reportedly grew suspicious and launched an internal forensic investigation.
The investigation uncovered more than 33 fraudulent claims that had already been paid.
'As a result, Anglo-American Platinum suffered a loss of over R6.3 million,' Mmuroa said.
The matter was reported to the Mahwelereng police station and later transferred to the Hawks for further investigation.
Mmuroa confirmed that four individuals from Global Strike Security were linked to the scheme, three of whom have now been arrested, while the fourth has since died.
The case was referred to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), which authorised warrants of arrest.
The suspects reportedly cooperated and handed themselves over to the Hawks.

Three suspects caught stealing eThekwini Municipality's electrical assets

Three suspects were arrested in Buffelsdraai for stealing eThekwini Municipality's electrical infrastructure. Image: Supplied Three suspects are expected to appear in court soon after being caught in Buffelsdraai with eThekwini Municipality's electrical infrastructure valued at just under R100,000. In a statement, the municipality said the suspects were caught with two sealed drums of electrical cable, along with brand new streetlight poles and fittings, and all these were confirmed to be municipal property. The city said it received a tip-off about a private residence, and the successful operation was carried out with the South African Police Service, the Revenue Protection Branch, the metro police, and the eThekwini District Economic Infrastructure Task Team. 'Preliminary investigations suggest the suspects are part of a broader illegal electricity connection syndicate targeting the city's infrastructure. The vehicle used in their operation, a Nissan NP200 bearing the name 'Isithebe Electrical', was also impounded,' read the statement. Video Player is loading. It said it would be adding charges of fraud for misrepresentation and impersonation of a municipal contractor – an act that brings the city's name into disrepute. 'The city is continuing its internal investigation to determine how municipal infrastructure landed in the hands of criminals. Further arrests are expected as efforts intensify to dismantle the syndicate and recover stolen assets.' The city said this successful operation was one of many to come as it strengthens its resolve to safeguard critical infrastructure. Theft of municipal assets not only incurs financial loss but also directly compromises the directorate's ability to deliver essential services to communities.

Bail granted to SANDF twelve embroiled in murderous scandal

On 11 July 2025, the Randburg Magistrate's Court granted R10 000 bail each to twelve South African National Defence Force officials. They are embroiled in a murderous scandal. Lieutenant Colonel Frans Mathipa was gunned down on 6 August 2023. According to law enforcement, the shooting was an alleged plot by the 12 SANDF members. At the time of the incident, Mathipa was driving on the N1 highway near Hammanskraal. According to Hawks spokesperson, Katlego Mogale, the shooting caused Mathipa to lose control of his vehicle. He veered into a ditch and it resulted in his subsequent death. An investigation into Mathipa's death led the Hawks to Sunnybooi Pinny Wambi, Edward Albert van Deventer, David Mogaditswe, Kgosietsile Letsatsi, Samkelo Ngwenya and Jonathan Nteleza. Mogale said Paulos Matlou, Herbert Mashego, Solomon Lechoenyo, Jacob Mokoena, Richard Mpoetsi and Olyn Lenardus were also implicated. Lieutenant Colonel Mathipa was on duty when he was killed. He was a member of the Gauteng Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit of the Hawks. He was tasked with investigating crimes against the state. 'The accused are also allegedly linked to a case of kidnapping of two male foreign nationals at a mall in Midrand on 29 December 202,' Mogale continued. While the twelve celebrate temporary relief, Mogale has warned that it will be only for a week as they are due back in court next Thursday. Following the granting of bail, the Magistrate postponed the case to 17 July 2025, for the state to appeal the bail judgement.

R7 million transformer theft 5th suspect remains in custody as co-accused gets bail

JOHANNESBURG - One of the men accused of stealing a R7 million transformer at the Laudium sub-station north of Pretoria has been denied bail by the Atteridgeville Magistrates Court. Katlego Molepo appeared before the court on Friday and will be back behind bars this evening after his bail bid failed as a result of an undisclosed previous conviction. Molepo is the only one who was denied bail out of five accused suspects in the matter. The transformer was stolen last November, causing a strain on the electricity supply in the area. Three of the suspects, who are municipal workers, were granted bail last week they also appeared in court today for Katlego Molepo's bail outcome. Last week, Siphiwe Mahlangu received R35,000 bail while Thomas Baloyi and Daniel Kubayi got R30,000 bail each. The state did not oppose their bail applications, stating they were all first-time offenders. Molepo was, however, not so lucky owing to a previous conviction. He will remain behind bars at the Kgosi Mampuru prison until his next court appearance, while his other co-accused will return on 5th August.
