Classic films being screened in north Cumbrian cinemas this summer
Hot on the heels of Tom Cruise's kinetic - and occasionally baffling - action epic Mission Impossible Final Reckoning, we've had: naked, rage-infected hordes trying to tear Aaron Taylor-Johnson limb-from-limb in the threequel curio 28 Years Later; Brad Pitt's motorsport blockbuster F1; Scarlett Johansson battling dinosaurs in Jurassic World Rebirth; and a 'live action reimagining' of the How to Train Your Dragon film.
On top of that, Friday will see a new treat for fans of CGI and spandex - yet another reboot of the Superman franchise.
It's a decent line-up, stacked with interest, but cinemas aren't just about new releases anymore. To get bums on seats, picture houses need to diversify, and re-releases, remasters, and anniversary screenings of classic films are a good way of coaxing in different audiences.
Here are some options in Cumbria this summer...
The excellent Parkway cinema in Workington, as part of its WeWatchFilms strand, will be showing both Ridley Scott's harrowing space horror Alien [1979] and James Cameron's thrilling sequel Aliens [1987] this month. At the time of writing, the latter is sold out but a few tickets remain for the former, which is being shown at 8pm on July 14. It's worth keeping an eye on wewatchfilms.com too - they're showing the Bond classic Goldfinger in August and Peter Weir's superb Truman Show in September.
The Goonies is being re-released to mark its 40th anniversary.
The Vue cinema in Carlisle will be the place to bathe in some nostalgia later this month when, four decades after its release, the kids' classic The Goonies will be screened. Showings will be on Saturday, July 26, Sunday, July 27 and Tuesday, July 29. It's a film that's a cult favourite among some families but even this forty-year-old adventure romp isn't immune from Hollywood's rampant sequel-itis... it was announced in February that apparently a second film is in the works.
The Taiwanese director Ang Lee brought Jane Austen's classic novel to the big screen in the mid-90s from an Oscar-winning script by Emma Thompson. The story follows the lives of the Dashwood sisters - played by Thompson and Kate Winslet - as they deal with the loss of their father and their sudden precarious financial situation. The cast is superb across the board. It's being shown at the Vue in Carlisle on Saturday, August 9, Sunday, August 10 and Wednesday, August 13.

The fourth film in the Harry Potter series, based on author JK Rowling's classic series of children's books. This was the one where things started to get a bit darker, with wizard children being murdered, the corpse of an old man found in a forest, and the resurrection of an evil wizard with a snake-like head. It's set to be shown at Carlisle Vue on Saturday, August 30 and Monday, September 1.

How Expensify landed primo placement in Brad Pitt's blockbuster movie ‘F1'
From its first trailer, it was crystal clear that Apple was serious about making its blockbuster ode to car racing as realistic as possible. It was shot in and around an actual Formula One season. Legendary driver Lewis Hamilton was a producer and consultant. And Brad Pitt's fictional F1 team had a large collection of very real brand partners and sponsors. One of if not the most visible is expense management software brand Expensify. It's on the car, it's on the helmet, it's emblazoned across Brad Pitt's chest. Damson Idris's character actually shoots an Expensify commercial in the film. Idris also showed up to the Met Gala in the racing suit. This is 1,000-horsepower product placement. On this episode of Brand New World, I talk to Expensify's chief financial officer Ryan Schaffer, and Hannes Ciatti, founder and head creative at ad agency Alto, who give me a look under the hood of how the brand got such a prominent role in what is shaping up to be Apple's first hit film. Schaffer says that the brand is almost omnipresent in the film by nature of its placement as a F1 sponsor, but that the level of exposure around the film was unexpected. Things like the Don Tolliver/Doja Cat music video, or the fact the Expensify logo pops up in every other brand sponsor's promo materials, have made it already worth the investment. 'We have 20 companies right now promoting our logo. Other companies much larger than ours are promoting our logo, not on purpose, but we can't help but be there by nature of this sponsorship. Heineken's running a spot we're in, and we've never spoken to them.' Industry debrief We recorded this episode in late June, as most of the advertising, marketing, and brand industry was fresh off the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity. That's where brands, marketers, ad agencies, tech companies, platforms, entertainment, sports, or anyone who is part of the brand world ecosystem lands in the South of France to celebrate the previous year and make deals for the months ahead. To make sense of it all, or at least a good portion of it, I called up Tim Nudd, the creativity editor at Advertising Age, and a journalist who's been covering and commenting on this industry for longer than almost anyone. Inside scoops, gossip, or just good stories, Nudd and I talked about what impressed him most, surprised him, and what he's hearing we can expect from major brands heading into the second half of the year. Chappell Roan's Brand New No. 1 Single
Chappell Roan's 'The Giver' debuts at No. 1 on the Official Vinyl Singles chart in the U.K., marking ... More her third chart-topper — and third consecutive leader — on the list. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - OCTOBER 25: Chappell Roan at the Los Angeles premiere of Netflix's "Olivia Rodrigo: GUTS World Tour" at NYA EAST on October 25, 2024 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Momodu Mansaray/FilmMagic) After breaking into the mainstream and becoming one of the hottest new names in pop music, Chappell Roan switched things up in early 2025. The world has been eager for new music from the Grammy-winning superstar, and for months, all she's been promoting is 'The Giver,' which has divided listeners. The track sounds nothing like the tunes that turned her into a global powerhouse, as it moved Roan into country-pop territory. 'The Giver' returns to several charts in the United Kingdom this week and debuts on a pair of tallies at the same time, after the vinyl edition of the single finally shipped to fans. "The Giver" Returns and Debuts 'The Giver' opens at No. 1 on the Official Vinyl Singles chart, which ranks the bestselling individual tracks on that format in the U.K. As the track launches, Roan earns her third No. 1 on the list, as her country-leaning cut joins 'Good Luck, Babe!' and 'Pink Pony Club,' both of which also reached the top spot. Roan has only sent three tracks to the Official Vinyl Singles chart throughout her career, and all of them have hit No. 1. That means her track record on the roster remains unbroken. Chappell Roan Debuts at No. 2 Elsewhere While 'The Giver' rules the Official Vinyl Singles chart, it misses out on opening in the same spot on the Official Physical Singles tally. On that ranking, Roan starts the tune at No. 2. She also reappears in the same position on the Official Singles Sales list, which is not limited to any one format. 'The Giver' has already spent 10 weeks on that roster, and previously stalled in the runner-up spot when it was brand new and only available digitally. 'The Giver' Just Misses the Top 40 'The Giver' also originally missed out on becoming a champion on the Official Singles chart by just one space, when it was brand new and it peaked at No. 2. Though the tune returns to that roster, it doesn't appear in as lofty a position as on sales-focused lists. Roan narrowly fails to send 'The Giver' back into the top 40, as it reenters the all-consumption ranking at No. 43. Chappell Roan's Latest Remains a Standalone Hit For the moment, 'The Giver' is a standalone single, just like 'Good Luck, Babe!' which helped catapult her debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess to great commercial success — even though the tune isn't featured on that full-length. Anticipation for Roan's sophomore project is high, though the singer-songwriter hasn't given any real signs that she's ready to deliver an album. So, for now, 'The Giver' must exist on its own as a bestseller.
