Netflix's new crime thriller just became one of my most anticipated movies of the summer — and you need to watch the gripping trailer now
This summer is set to be a big one for Vanessa Kirby. She's due on the big screen next week as part of Marvel's new 'Fantastic Four' reboot, and then just a few weeks later, she's headlining a buzzy new crime thriller movie on Netflix.
Premiering on the world's most popular streaming service on August 15, the film in question is called 'Night Always Comes.' The movie is described as 'a propulsive odyssey of survival' by Netflix, and now that we have a trailer, it's very quickly become one of my most anticipated new releases of the summer.
The trailer is a mere two minutes long, but it gives us a pretty detailed look at the movie, and let's just say it's got me adding the movie to my watchlist almost a month ahead of time. That's the hallmark of a very good trailer.
We see Kirby playing Lynette, a desperate but resourceful woman given a single night to scrounge up $25,000 to keep her family from being evicted, and her entire world falling apart. With the clock ticking, Lynette is forced to go to extreme lengths to get the money needed to secure her future.
Based on Willy Vlautin's 2021 novel of the same name, and directed by Benjamin Caron, 'Night Always Comes' also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, Zack Gottsagen, Stephan James, Julia Fox, Eli Roth, Randall Park and Michael Kelly.
I'm especially excited to see Gottsagen appear in the cast list after his excellent performance in 2019's 'The Peanut Butter Falcon.'
'Night Always Comes' on Netflix — here's everything you need to know
Alongside this intense first trailer, Netflix has also released a Tudum blog post giving us more details about the upcoming crime thriller movie. This includes an official logline:
"'Night Always Comes' follows Lynette (Kirby), a woman who risks everything to secure the house that represents a future for her family. On a dangerous odyssey through a single night, Lynette is forced to confront her dark past in order to finally break free.'
The Netflix original flick has been written by Sarah Conradt, who penned last year's underrated thriller 'Mothers' Instinct' starring Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain, and it represents a reunion for Kirby and Caron, who previously collaborated on the popular 'The Crown' series.
'What drew me to the film was its exploration of survival and sacrifice and the idea of quiet heroism,' said Caron. 'It asks the question, 'Who gets to feel safe, and at what cost?''
Filmed and set in Portland, Oregon, the movie takes place over a single night, which should give the thriller a real sense of momentum and add to the intensity as the clock is always ticking. Plus, Kirby received an Oscar nomination for her last Netflix project, 'Pieces of a Woman,' and is also producing in this one, so I'm pretty confident in the final result.
On Kirby's performance, Caron said, 'Vanessa brings a beautifully wild energy to Lynette, making the character unpredictable and deeply, deeply human. Together, we worked on creating a character who is simply not just reacting to the world, but desperately trying to wrest control of her future, even as she teeters on the edge of self-destruction.'
Between its hooky premise, best-selling source material, and strong cast list, it definitely seems like 'Night Always Comes' has all the ingredients to be a Netflix hit next month, and it could be the streaming service's best shot this year of picking up some major award nominations.
As noted, 'Night Always Comes' arrives on Netflix on August 15, and I'm ready to add it to my watchlist right now. If the basic setup doesn't sell you on this movie, then the gripping new trailer is sure to tip you over the edge. I've got a feeling this one could be among Netflix's best originals of the year.

The Matrix is now streaming for free. Find out how to stream great movies (July 25-27)
Streaming has undoubtedly changed how we watch movies. While nothing can replace the theatrical experience, the pros of streaming ultimately outweigh the cons. That being said, the prices are getting out of control. Offset those costs by downloading FAST services, free apps that offer thousands of movies at no cost to the consumer. If you believe the quality of movies on FAST services is poor, think again. The Matrix, one of the most influential movies of the last 30 years, is streaming for free. The hits don't stop there. Learn how to stream The Matrix and two other films below. Recommended Videos We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on HBO Max, and the best movies on Disney+. The Matrix (1999) Trying to explain the importance of The Matrix in two paragraphs is borderline impossible, so I'll give you the Cliff's Notes. Directed by the Wachowskis, The Matrix explores a dystopian future where humanity becomes trapped inside a simulated reality controlled by machines. Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves), better known as the hacker Neo, is recruited by Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) to join his band of rebels in the fight to free humans from the Matrix. Morpheus believes Neo is 'the One,' humanity's messiah who will destroy the sentient agents trying to keep people from escaping the Matrix. Many of The Matrix's elements — fight choreography, slow motion, wire fu techniques, and philosophical themes — inspired an entire generation of movies. Without The Matrix, most of your favorite action and sci-fi movies in the 21st century would not exist. Stream The Matrix on Pluto TV. The Wedding Singer (1998) If Happy Gilmore 2 becomes a hit, perhaps Netflix would want to explore another sequel to another Adam Sandler '90s movie, The Wedding Singer. Before 1998, Sandler was best known for his juvenile and immature humor. The Wedding Singer displayed Sandler's softer side, proving something that many of us have known for years — the Sandman is one of Hollywood's most versatile actors. The kind-hearted Robbie Hart (Sandler) is left at the altar on his wedding day. To make matters worse, Robbie works as a wedding singer, meaning he's constantly surrounded by love and happiness, two things he has yet to find. The only thing snapping him out of his depression is Julia (Drew Barrymore), a cheerful waitress who asks Robbie to help plan her wedding. As the two bond over wedding plans, Robbie realizes he loves Julia and wants to be the one to marry her. Grow Old With You is a Hall of Fame Sandler song. Stream The Wedding Singer on Tubi. The Worst Person in the World (2021) Do not take the title, The Worst Person in the World, at face value. Renate Reinsve's Julie might believe she's a bad person, but in actuality, she's confused about her life and afraid of the future. It's a normal feeling for anyone in Julie's shoes, an unmarried twentysomething transitioning into her 30s. Divided into 12 chapters, a prologue, and an epilogue, The Worst Person in the World explores Julie's romantic life, including her relationships with a comic artist (Anders Danielsen Lie) and a barista (Herbert Nordrum). The spectacular Reinsve injects passion, charisma, and depth into her character while subverting our expectations in a familiar genre. Reinsve and director Joachim Trier will reunite later this year in the Oscar favorite Sentimental Value. Stream The Worst Person in the World on Tubi.

Kevin Costner's ambitious Western is underrated — watch it now on HBO Max (July 25-27)
Several of Warner Bros.' biggest releases of 2025 are streaming on HBO Max. A Minecraft Movie, the third-highest-grossing movie of 2025, and Sinners, Ryan Coogler's critically acclaimed vampiric horror, are occupying the first two spots in the top 10. Beyond the top 10, there are a plethora of underrated movies worthy of your time. Kevin Costner's Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 is much better than the mixed reviews it received at the time of its release. This weekend, give Horizon and these two underrated movies a shot. Recommended Videos We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on HBO Max, and the best movies on Disney+. Music Box: Yacht Rock: A Documentary (2024) Christopher Cross. Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins. Steely Dan. Toto. These five musicians and bands helped pioneer a genre of music that became known as yacht rock. Developed in the late '70s and early '80s, yacht rock is a West Coast sound that infused soulful vocals with easy-listening lyrics. Yacht rock is a combination of soft pop, jazz, R&B, and funk. Yacht rock's popularity exploded in the mid-1980s, but by the end of the decade, it began to lose its stranglehold on pop culture. That's when an unlikely ally — hip hop artists — began sampling yacht rock beats in their songs, which led to a resurgence in the genre. Yacht Rock: A Documentary is an informative exploration into a genre that deserves much more credit for its significant impact on the music industry. Stream Music Box: Yacht Rock: A Documentary on HBO Max. Blue Beetle (2023) Blue Beetle was one of DC's casualties in 2023. James Gunn and Peter Safran, the new heads of DC Studios, clearly wanted the 2023 slate — Shazam 2, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman 2 — to disappear and make way for the new DC Universe. That being said, Blue Beetle displayed the most potential, which is probably why an animated series was greenlit. Cobra Kai's Xolo Maridueña as Jamie Reyes, a recent college graduate who becomes the Blue Beetle after fusing with the Scarab. The Scarab encases Jamie in an armored exoskeleton with superpowers, including flight, strength, and agility. Despite his initial hesitation, Jamie comes to accept his newfound abilities and embraces his new calling. On its surface, Blue Beetle is a superhero adventure, but the movie works best as a grounded family drama thanks to its terrific cast. Stream Blue Beetle on HBO Max. Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 (2024) Kevin Costner has become the butt of a lot of jokes for Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1. Costner personally funded $38 million of the $100 million budget shared by the first two films. His ambition may have gotten the better of him, considering Chapter 1 flopped at the box office, and Warner Bros. removed Chapter 2 from its release calendar. All that being said, I'm glad Horizon exists because there are moments in this film — including the Apache raid and Hayes' confrontation with Caleb — that are pure cinematic magic. A Western about life on the American frontier is in Costner's wheelhouse. Mr. Costner, please sell the rights to Netflix to release the next three chapters. Stream Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 on HBO Max.

Sacha Baron Cohen ‘only joking' over using Ozempic to transform body for Marvel role
Sacha Baron Cohen insists he was 'only joking' when he claimed to have used Ozempic to help achieve his new muscular physique for a Marvel role. The 53-year-old actor appeared on the cover of Men's Fitness UK this week, debuting his dramatic body transformation ahead of playing the villain Mephisto in Marvel's Ironheart miniseries. Alongside images from the shoot, Sacha posted on Instagram: 'Some celebs use Ozempic, some use private chefs, some use personal trainers. I did all three.' He added: 'This is not AI. I really am egotistical enough to do this. Debuting my new character. Middle aged man who replaced beer with protein shakes.' Sacha also thanked his trainer Alfonso Moretti, writing: 'Thanks @theangrytrainer for doing the unthinkable – putting up with me for 25 minutes a day.' However, after the post prompted widespread speculation and some backlash, representatives for Sacha have told MailOnline he 'was only joking' about using Ozempic. They added that the transformation was entirely the result of 'hard work'. Speaking to Men's Fitness UK, Sacha said he had only three weeks to get into superhero shape and credited Alfonso, also known as 'The Angry Trainer', with designing a focused programme of short daily workouts and strict nutrition. Sacha said: '25-minute workouts that were sustainable. Even while filming, the workouts happened. 'In the past, I would've thought you needed hour-long sessions.' He said the plan included 100 push-ups a day and a diet high in fibre and protein, with minimal sugar. At the start of training, Alfonso reportedly told Sacha he had 'the core strength of an arthritic jellyfish' but praised his consistency. Within two weeks, Marvel's costume department reportedly spent $5,000 (£3,600) making adjustments to his wardrobe due to changes in his physique. Sacha revealed he reached out to actor Matthew McConaughey for a trainer recommendation, which led him to Alfonso. Their first meeting was via FaceTime, during which the trainer asked Sacha to strip to his underwear so he could assess his body. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently confirmed Sacha will portray Mephisto – a demonic entity who appears in the Ironheart series, and who has long been rumoured to be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sacha rose to prominence in the late 1990s with his Ali G character, followed by major roles in Borat, Brüno, and The Dictator.
