Brad Fittler reveals the 'agonising' reason why he opted out of succeeding Mal Meninga as the Kangaroos new coach
Brad Fittler has admitted he 'agonised' over the decision to pull out of the race to become the next Kangaroos coach.
The former New South Wales boss revealed on Monday that he instead wanted to focus on his television commitments, despite being the front-runner to replace Mal Meninga.
It comes as Meninga is due to take charge of the new Perth Bears NRL franchise when they enter the league in 2027.
However, Fittler has since told the ARL Commission he was no longer eyeing up a role with the Australian men's Test side, explaining that he 'didn't think I could do it justice.'
Speaking to 2GB on Monday, the 53-year-old said: 'There was an opportunity there, I'm very grateful for them thinking about me, but I think just in the situation I'm in at the moment, my commitments to Channel 9, I work for the NRL, I'm really enjoying that.'
Fittler joined Channel 9 back in 2010 and has twinned commitments to co-hosting The Footy Show with live commentary.
The former New South Wales boss revealed he 'didn't think he could do the role justice' instead revealing he wanted to prioritise his media commitments
'When the role came about and I just started to think about it and start planning that this is maybe for someone else at the moment,' the former Roosters five-eighth explained.
'It was an incredible opportunity, but I also didn't think I could do it justice. That's why I didn't want to commit to it.'
The former representative star, who captained the Kangaroos in 25 Tests, also gave his verdict on the attributes the right candidate for the role should have.
'But what an incredible opportunity for someone. I think it's someone with a bit of time,' he told the radio station.
'They need to get hotels, grounds, training fields, equipment, everything - it's a big job ahead, but what an awesome experience it is going to be, three Tests over in England.'
The two-time premiership winner oversaw 18 games as the coach of the New South Wales between 2018 and 2023, but also lifted the lid on how he was left sometimes feeling 'uncomfortable' when completing his media duties, while also taking charge of the Blues.
However, Fittler did not rule out a return to coaching.
'I won't say I won't ever do it again in the future,' he said.
'I always found even when I was commentating while I coached the Origin team, it makes it a bit uncomfortable when you're talking about players and then you have to pick players," he said.
'I just thought that got a bit muddy at stages and wore on my conscience at times.'
The former NSW mentor's decision leaves Cameron Smith as the front-runner for the role, having also emerged as a genuine contender.
Smith only retired from representative football eight years ago but has coaching experience as Billy Slater's Queensland assistant in 2022 and 2023.
Kevin Walters is also considered an option, after briefly meeting with the NRL as they searched for the Bears' first coach.
Walters is keen to get back into the coaching game, after being sacked by the Broncos at the end of last season.
Meninga was forced to end his nine-year tenure at the helm of the Kangaroos in early June, after taking on the head coach job at the Bears.
Appointing a new Kangaroos coach is a top priority for the ARLC, with an end-of-season Ashes tour of England looming.
A full-time Jillaroos coach must also be appointed, after Brad Donald's exit earlier this year.
His former assistant Jess Skinner took over on an interim basis for Australia's Test against England in Las Vegas in March, which the Jillaroos won 90-4.

EXCLUSIVE Footy legend Billy Slater looks fit enough to play as he takes a freezing dip at Queensland's State of Origin camp
NRL legend Billy Slater has proven he's still in excellent physical condition after being spotted going for an early morning swim on the Sunshine Coast. The 42-year-old Maroons coach is currently at Queensland 's State of Origin camp as the side prepares for the game three decider in Sydney on July 9. Slater, who retired in 2018, was photographed braving a 7am dip at Twin Waters Beach in windy and cold conditions on Tuesday morning - and showcased a physique that rivaled his playing days. The former footy star was the only person swimming, but took a moment to chat to surfers who stopped to wish the Maroons well next week. When asked where the rest of the squad was, Slater fired back: 'Probably asleep'. Despite retiring from rugby league seven years ago, the dad of two says he's made it a priority to stay in top shape. 'When I was playing my routine was structured so I had to adapt to a different way and find new ways to stay fit and healthy,' he told Men's Health magazine. 'Fitness and exercise was something I had to add into my day rather than it being my main focus. Since retiring, I've had more time to be active and have fun with my family, and have made it a priority to keep living a healthy lifestyle. 'Playing sport with my kids, riding horses and outdoor activities make up the majority of my exercise.' Slater says he never tries to make his exercise feel like a chore, but rather make it part of his lifestyle. 'Occasionally I work in a bit of structured training which I prefer to do first thing in the morning,' he said. 'There's something about exercising in the morning that puts you in a good frame of mind for the rest of the day.' The Melbourne Storm great says that he's tried to continue a similar diet to what he had when he was playing. 'Breakfast would consist of avocado and eggs on toast. Lunch is usually a salad and ham sandwich followed by a banana,' Slater said. 'For dinner, I'll usually have a steak or chicken, roast pumpkin and sweet potatoes with some greens. I'm always a sucker for dessert, either ice cream or Tim Tams.' Slater and his fellow selectors dropped a bomb on NSW earlier in the week by naming Brisbane journeyman Gehamat Shibasaki at centre for his Origin debut and recalling Canberra prop Josh Papalii for one final Origin showdown in Sydney next week. The switch of Dolphins talisman Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow from wing to his club position of fullback comes as no surprise. His four tries in the latest masterclass showing against South Sydney revealed why the man known as 'Hammer' was the right choice, edging out Brisbane's Reece Walsh who has been recalled as 18th man. Earlier in the series, Slater had a war of words with NSW player turned radio star Aaron Woods, who branded Slater a 'grub'. Slater hit back at Woods by making ahead of State of Origin II.

Cadillac boss expects rivals to be ‘apoplectic' if they lose to F1's newest team
Formula One's newest team Cadillac are braced to finish last in their debut season with boss Graeme Lowdon claiming their rivals will be 'apoplectic' if they beat them. Cadillac's long-anticipated entry for 2026 was finally rubber-stamped in March providing them with a year to get ready for next season's opener in Australia. Cadillac, a division of American motoring giant General Motors, will be supported by TWG Motorsports and powered by Ferrari before it develops its own engines. They will become the first new constructor in a decade with one of four bases at Silverstone – the venue for this weekend's British Grand Prix – as well as Indiana, North Carolina and Michigan in the United States. But despite the heavyweight backing of GM, British team principal Lowdon warned: 'We have had discussions with our shareholders about what expectations should be, and the easiest way I can describe it to them is, can you imagine if you have owned a Formula One team for 10 years and another team rocks up and beats you? You would be apoplectic, so annoyed, so you have to assume that any new team coming in is going to be last, otherwise what has gone wrong somewhere else? 'We want to be as competitive as we can but we have to be realistic, too. We see the numbers and we are happy with our progress. But we don't know where we will be other than if we beat someone, then they are going to be angry. 'There is no real magic to Formula One. It is just very, very difficult. The reason it is so difficult is because everyone is doing the same thing on the same day, and that is something that TWG and GM fully understand. We are partnering with a manufacturer that understands racing. You just tell them the truth.' Cadillac's arrival as the 11th team on the grid will open up two driver vacancies. Valtteri Bottas, Lewis Hamilton's former wingman, is understood to be interested in a return to a full-time seat (he is currently reserve driver at Mercedes) in F1. Sergio Perez, dropped by Red Bull at the end of last year, and former Formula Two champion Felipe Drugovich, have also been linked. Chinese driver Zhou Guanyu, who raced with Alfa Romeo and Sauber across three seasons, is another in the frame. But Lowdon continued: 'Nothing is decided yet. There is a very strong argument to say that a new team in its first year of racing would benefit hugely from drivers who are experienced. 'We know who is in the market, and we have got a good idea of what we need, but we are some way off reaching that stage of finalising our line-up.'
