AX-4 crew fully immersed in their mission aboard ISS

Chennai, June 29 (UNI) The four member Ax-4 crew were fully immersed in their mission aboard
the International Space Station (ISS), Axiom Space said today.
On the fourth day updates, it said Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) Commander Peggy Whitson, Indian Pilot
Shubhanshu Shukla 'Shux,' Mission Specialist Sławosz 'Suave' Uznański-Wiśniewski, and Mission
Specialist Tibor Kapu are now fully immersed in their mission aboard the ISS wrapping up their day on orbit with a schedule full of scientific research and international outreach."
The Ax-4 crew has transitioned smoothly from arrival protocols to hands-on research.
With microgravity acclimation behind them, the crew is now diving into a diverse portfolio of
experiments that could shape the future of medicine, agriculture, and space exploration, it said.
Peggy led the charge on the 4th day yesterday with work on the Cancer in LEO-3 investigation.
Building on previous Axiom Space missions, this study focuses on how cancer cells behave in
microgravity. Specifically, it examines tumor organoids and how a new model of triple-negative
breast cancer responds to drug treatments in space.
"The goal? To validate earlier findings and potentially unlock new therapeutic strategies that could
benefit patients on Earth and astronauts on long-duration missions", Axiom Space said.
Shux spent time in the Life Sciences Glovebox (LSG) working on the Myogenesis experiment.
This study aims to uncover the biological pathways behind skeletal muscle degradation in space
—a major challenge for astronauts. By identifying these mechanisms, researchers hope to develop
targeted therapies that could not only protect space travelers, but also aid people suffering from
muscle-degenerative diseases on Earth.
Tibor deployed the Rad Nano Dosimeter, a compact device designed to monitor radiation exposure
aboard the space station.
Understanding how radiation affects the human body in space is critical for planning future missions
to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. The data collected could also enhance Earth-based radiation monitoring technologies, benefiting industries from healthcare to environmental science.
Tibor began setting up the Vitapric investigation. This plant biology experiment explores how plant growth primers affect the development of microgreens in space.
The goal is to enhance the nutritional value of space-grown crops—boosting vitamins, proteins,
and minerals--to support sustainable food production for future long-duration missions.
In addition, the crew initiated the Cerebral Hemodynamics study, completing the first session after installing the necessary software.
Using ultrasound technology, this research explores how blood circulates in the brain under microgravity conditions.
The findings could improve our understanding of cardiovascular adaptation in space and inform
medical diagnostics and treatments for conditions like stroke and hypertension on Earth.
Shux also took part in a historic outreach event by speaking with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The conversation highlighted the growing global collaboration in space exploration and
inspired audiences back on Earth.
Peggy and Suave are also preparing to join Axiom Space Chief Scientist Dr. Lucie Low for a
special discussion on space radiation. They'll talk about the radiation research being conducted during Ax-4 and how it could help protect astronauts on future deep space missions.

‘Women-led development' paving way for new India: PM Modi at Mann Ki Baat

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the mantra of 'women-led development' is creating a new future for India. He stressed that the women are not only charting a fresh course for themselves but also for society at large. In his monthly radio broadcast Mann Ki Baat, the PM highlighted numerous examples of women-led initiatives from across the country. He said, 'In India, from health to social security, the country is moving ahead with the feeling of saturation in every field. This is also a great picture of social justice. These successes have instilled a belief that the coming times will make India stronger.' A vast majority of the Indian population is now benefiting from some form of social protection. Referring to a recent report by the International Labour Organization, he said, 'The report mentions that over 64% of the country's population is now definitely availing of some social protection benefit or the other. Social Security is one of the biggest coverage in the world.' He went on to say that approximately 95 crore people in the country are currently availing benefits from various social security schemes. In contrast, back in 2015, less than 25 crore people were covered. Taking a veiled swipe at the previous Congress-led government, without naming it directly, the PM remarked, 'Just a few days ago, the imposition of Emergency on the country completed its 50 years. We countrymen have observed the 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas'. We should always remember all those people who fought the Emergency with fortitude.' During the broadcast, PM Modi also played excerpts from speeches by former PMs Morarji Desai and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, as well as former Deputy PM Jagjivan Ram, all referencing the Emergency period. Among other examples of empowerment, the he spoke of Bodoland's rise in the realm of sports. The PM also celebrated what he termed a 'remarkable milestone' — the World Health Organization (WHO) declaring India trachoma-free — and praised healthcare workers for their instrumental role. He added, 'The 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' helped in eradicating it. The 'Jal Jeevan Mission' also contributed a lot to this success. Today, when clean water is reaching every home through taps, the risk of such ailments has reduced.'

Robotics education:A 21st-century catalyst for innovation

As Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning reshape the digital world, their real-world impact depends on physical technologies—most notably, robotics. Robotics education is emerging as a crucial bridge between theoretical innovation and practical application. From smart manufacturing to national security, robotics is key to transforming India from a service-based economy to a technology-exporting powerhouse. With rising demand, robust government initiatives, and growing educational focus, robotics offers both financial promise and professional fulfillment. For today's students and professionals, investing in robotics education means leading tomorrow's tech evolution—far beyond just coding and programming The emergence of new-age digital technologies, especially in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) has led the world to emphasize these disciplines in a new light. However, while these technologies are projected to become the backbone of technological evolution in the coming years, their supremacy can only be established with physical means. For instance, AI's pinnacle of success could only be achieved through solutions that address physical challenges such as manufacturing, security, or construction to name a few. However, to undertake these challenges, integrating advanced robotics would be crucial. For India's abundant tech professionals, this highlights a real-life catalyst for driving their professional ambitions forward while also contributing to the country's overall development. India is already placing much emphasis on AI, however, to become a tech-sovereign nation the likes of Robotics would have to be supported massively. This can only be done via motivated participation in these disciplines from Indian talents, who must look beyond coding and programming to make India from a net service exporter to a net technology exporter. Additionally, the current state of Robotics in India also highlights significant financial incentives for a professional, with the added scope of becoming drivers of the industry in the country. At the same time, traditional colleges and universities are integrating Robotics as part of their curriculums. Furthermore, initiatives such as the Atal Tinkering Labs have proved to be a catalyst in this regard, being supplemented by the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 that has detailed robotics and STEM education in K-12 education space, creating a funnel for more advanced educational & research platforms. The objective of these introductions is clear — to establish a robust Robotics ecosystem in the country, that can be used by millions of talents, professionals and other stakeholders to drive the country's vision in the future, while also assisting them in garnering professional excellence and financial assistance. Robotics education: A catalyst for professional aspirations? While the concepts of Robotics are not really new, the emergence of AI is transforming it dramatically. The world is integrating the two technologies to create solutions that are not only superior but also transform how we perceive work irrespective of its functionalities. This is where trained professionals in contemporary robotics education will be of particular value to the national interest, while also bridging the present gap in the space. At present, a Robotics Engineer in India with a mid-level experience of 5 years, can earn up to 10 lakh per annum. However, it is a serious challenge for organizations to get professionals with ample experience and capabilities in the domain, offering a unique opportunity for talents. This concern can be essentially addressed by establishing a robust education in Robotics and its intricacies around the country. The Indian government and a few state governments are already working on making this a reality, however, the push must also come from traditional educational bodies like colleges and universities. However, this remains a long-term plan, and to address this concern at present, professionals can look to garner valuable training or knowledge via upskilling. The Indian EdTech space has already pointed this aspect out and has been offering supplementary courses that will help professionals hone their skills as per the industrial requirements. This can help professionals to integrate themselves into the industry by equipping them with era-appropriate knowledge, and capabilities and most importantly, creating a supply line of talents to the industry stakeholders. Looking Ahead The foundations are carefully being laid by the Indian public and private sectors for the creation of a robust Robotics ecosystem in the country. However, the long-term efficacy of the efforts will depend on the talents themselves, and their innovation will be the primary catalysts for evolving the space into a full-fledged sector to drive India's national ambitions. In the coming decade, more Indian talents must look beyond coding and programming, skills that would soon be engulfed with AI coming in as a more time and cost-effective solution and instead look for more innovative technological skills. Robotics would be the perfect suitor in this aspect and could prove to be the catalyst of the professional ambitions and financial incentives Indian talents are looking for in the long term.
