Eggs thrown at devotees during Rath Yatra in Canada? India slams 'despicable' attack, demands action

Time of Indiaa day ago
India has strongly condemned the disruption that took place during the Rath Yatra celebrations in Toronto, calling the act 'despicable' and urging the Canadian Government to take strict action against those involved.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in India responded on Monday after reports surfaced that some people threw eggs at devotees during the festival. The incident reportedly happened when miscreants targeted the peaceful procession from a nearby building.
'We have seen reports regarding disruption created by mischievous elements during the Rath Yatra procession in Toronto,' said Randhir Jaiswal, official spokesperson for the MEA.

'Such despicable acts are regrettable and go against the spirit of the festival, which promotes unity, inclusivity and harmony,' he added.
India urges Canada to act
Jaiswal confirmed that India has officially taken up the issue with the Canadian authorities.
Live Events
'We have strongly taken up the matter... and hope the Canadian Government will act quickly to protect the religious rights of people,' he said.
Naveen Patnaik calls incident 'deeply disturbing'
Former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also expressed strong concern. He said reports of eggs being thrown at devotees were 'deeply disturbing' and hurt the sentiments of Lord Jagannath's followers worldwide.
In a post on X, Patnaik wrote: 'Such incidents cause deep pain to people of Odisha, for whom this festival is emotionally and culturally significant. If the reports are true, the Odisha Government should work with the MEA and protest officially.'
Social media post sparks outrage
The reports came to light after Toronto-based user Sangna Bajaj posted on Instagram about the incident. 'People from a building threw eggs at us,' she wrote. In another post, she asked, 'Have you ever experienced discrimination for your faith?'
The alleged attack has triggered widespread anger among the Indian diaspora in Canada.
Hindu temples under attack in Canada
This is not the first such incident. Several Hindu temples in Canada have been targeted in recent months. Most recently, the BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in Edmonton was vandalised. In past incidents, temples in Windsor, Mississauga, and Brampton were also defaced with anti-India graffiti.
These attacks have raised growing concerns about religious intolerance and the rise of Khalistani extremist elements operating from within Canada. Many of these incidents have been linked to propaganda calling for an independent Khalistan state.
The Indian Government and community leaders have asked Canadian authorities to take strong steps to protect Hindu religious sites, and ensure such hate-driven actions do not go unpunished.

India offers to help Bangladesh restore Satyajit Ray's home

India on Tuesday asked the Bangladesh government to stop the demolition of cinema legend Satyajit Ray's ancestral home in Mymensingh and offered to help in the maintenance and restoration of the property. In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reminded the interim government of the iconic status of the Rays in the 'shared cultural history' of the subcontinent. 'We note with profound regret that the ancestral property of noted filmmaker and litterateur Satyajit Ray in Mymensingh, Bangladesh, belonging to his grandfather and eminent litterateur, Upendra Kishor Ray Chowdhury, is being demolished,' the MEA statement said. 'Given the building's landmark status, symbolising Bangla cultural renaissance, it would be preferable to reconsider the demolition and examine options for its repair and reconstruction as a museum of literature and a symbol of the shared culture of India and Bangladesh,' the MEA said, offering to cooperate with the Bangladesh government for the purpose. The property, presently owned by the Government of Bangladesh, is in a state of disrepair. Earlier, media reports from Bangladesh said the ancestral house of the Rays, who hailed from Mymensingh in pre-1947 East Bengal, was being demolished to make way for a new structure. The property where Ray's grandfather, the famous writer and publisher Upendrakishore Roychoudhury, had lived was taken over by the Government of Pakistan in 1947 and subsequently served as a centre for children's education — Mymensingh Shishu Academy.

Big challenges ahead for new DIG Vartika Katiyar

Ballari: Vartika Katiyar, a 2010-batch IPS officer, was appointed as the deputy inspector general of police (DIG) of Ballari zone. She previously served as the DIG of the State Home Guards and Civil Defence Corps. Following the retirement of BS Lokesh, the former Inspector General of Police of Ballari zone on April 30, Vartika assumed the position that remained unfilled since then. The Ballari zone encompasses Ballari, Vijayanagara, Koppal, and Raichur districts, featuring significant locations including the Unesco World Heritage Site Hampi, iron ore mines at Ballari and Sandur, Tungabhadra dam in Koppal, thermal power stations in Ballari and Raichur, and lengthy borders with Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states. As a result, there was a rise in interstate traffic, attracting tourists and workers from both India and abroad. Naturally, this led to an increase in crime cases, with the highest number reported in the Hampi Development Authority. The new DIG is also tasked with managing the multitude of unauthorised resorts and the range of illegal activities taking place there. In the first week of March this year, incidents such as the sexual assault of an Israeli tourist and a local resort owner in Sanapur, located in the Gangavathi taluk of Koppal district, the murder of a tourist from Odisha, and the assault on an American national were highlighted in both national and international media. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like I'm retiring! In this context, R Hithendra, the additional director general of police (Law & Order), sent a letter to Koppal SP Ram L Arasiddi on June 30, directing him to take immediate action to safeguard foreign tourists. Nevertheless, issues such as illegal mining, unauthorised resorts, gambling, and illegal sand smuggling persist without interruption. In the meantime, the Hampi World Heritage Area Management Authority (HWHAMA) scheduled an eviction operation for July 16 to remove illegally constructed resorts at various locations along the Tungabhadra River, including Sanapura in Gangavathi. This sparked curiosity among the local residents regarding how the new DIG will tackle this seemingly insurmountable challenge. Additionally, Vijayanagara district also underwent administrative changes with Jahnavi S, a 2019-batch IPS officer previously serving as DCP in Mysuru, being appointed as the new superintendent of police. She replaces Dr Srihari Babu BL, who served as SP for 2.8 years and was transferred to Bengaluru as CCB DCP.

Tennis player challenges exclusion of game from Hindu College sports quota admissions

New Delhi: A junior national-level tennis player has moved the Delhi High Court questioning the alleged omission of tennis from the list of games available to seek admission under the sports quota at Hindu College of Delhi University. Justice Vikas Mahajan on Monday sought the stand of the college and DU on the plea filed by Aditi Rawat, challenging the absence of lawn tennis in the sports offered by the college for admission under the sports quota for the upcoming academic year. The plea stated that Rawat is "a distinguished Lawn Tennis athlete and gold medallist at the CBSE Nationals" and challenges "the arbitrary denial of admission" under the Sports Quota (Lawn Tennis) at Hindu College. It contends that the college authorities violated DU's Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) Policy 2025-26, which provides for a mandatory 5% supernumerary sports quota in each college. Highlighting that the student-athlete has outstanding qualifications at various levels, such as national-level sports achievements, and also satisfies all eligibility conditions for admission under the sports quota, the petition seeks direction to the college to reserve one seat for her until the court decides the matter. As per the plea, Rawat applied for admission in DU under the sports quota with Hindu College as her first preference. "To the utter surprise and grave prejudice of the petitioner, it was revealed that Hindu College has not allotted even a single seat under the discipline of Lawn Tennis, neither for men nor for women candidates. This is despite the fact that Lawn Tennis is among the recognised and approved sporting disciplines under the Sports Quota admissions, and several other colleges under DU have allotted such seats. The omission is both unjustified and discriminatory, creating a hostile environment for Lawn Tennis aspirants, such as the petitioner," the petition says.
