Sandburg's Gabby Dittmer, who's headed to DePaul, lays down law with hat trick against Stagg. ‘Definitely special.'

Gabby Dittmer wasn't ready to play her last soccer game for Sandburg.
Dittmer, a senior forward and a standout player in all four years for the Eagles, has decided to bypass some opportunities to play in college. She plans instead to study law at DePaul.
That meant Wednesday's playoff opener could have been the end. Dittmer was determined to make sure it would not be.
'It's definitely special for me,' she said. 'I've been playing soccer my whole life and obviously I love soccer, so I was very excited for this game. You never know what's going to come next. It could be nothing or it could be another game.
'I really wanted another game.'
Dittmer extended her final season by turning in one of the best performances of her career, recording a hat trick to lead Sandburg to a 3-1 win over district rival Stagg in a Class 3A Joliet Central Regional semifinal.
Alanna Noone made six saves for the eighth-seeded Eagles (5-9-4), who avenged a 1-0 shootout loss to the Chargers on May 6. Maeve Durkin led a strong defensive effort.
The Eagles will take on top-seeded Lincoln-Way East (16-3-1) — a 9-0 winner over Joliet Central — at 5 p.m. Friday in the regional final. Sandburg played the Griffins tough in a 1-0 loss on May 8.
Justyna Palenica scored Wednesday on a free kick for ninth-seeded Stagg (7-12-2), while Maritza Alvarez made five saves.
Dittmer, meanwhile, struggled mightily with her choice to give up soccer.
'It was probably one of the hardest decisions I've ever made,' she said. 'I love soccer so much. My family, my teammates and my coaches all put so much time into me and helped me get to where I am, so it's a really hard thing to walk away from.
'But for me, education came first when I wanted to think about my future.'
Dittmer came out on a mission Wednesday night. She scored in the 16th minute, then added a second goal just over five minutes later by juking a defender and ripping in a 20-yard shot.
Durkin has grown accustomed to seeing her teammate pull off moves like that.
'She's always been a special player,' Durkin said of Dittmer. 'Since freshman year, we've been playing together, and every time, her skill and her drive to want the ball and want to score the ball, it's always there. She has the energy 100% of the time.'
Things later got a bit scary for the Eagles. Palenica scored with five seconds left in the first half. Then, with Stagg building momentum early in the second half, a red card against the Eagles put them down a player for the final 23 minutes.
Dittmer, though, took the pressure off by completing her hat trick, converting a 25-yard shot with 18:11 to go. It was her 12th goal of the season and 52nd of her career.
Sandburg coach Tom Kubowicz has enjoyed watching all 52 goals.
'It's going to be tough to replace her,' Kubowicz said. 'She doesn't need a lot of space. If you give her a chance to shoot, she's going to shoot and there's a good chance it's going to go in.'
As for the future, Dittmer believes being a soccer player has prepared her for a tough academic journey.
'Soccer helped make me a very disciplined person and helped teach me hard work,' she said. 'I wanted to stay busy, challenge myself and be on a good career path.
'Everything I learned from soccer, I want to bring it to school, and I think it's a very good way for me to keep going with the hardworking mindset.'
As for soccer, she's going out in style.
'I'm definitely taking everything in and trying to enjoy it,' Dittmer said. 'Ending in high school, with these girls and these coaches who have all meant so much to me, it's the perfect ending for me.'

Quinyon Mitchell recognized as top-10 cornerback by NFL execs

Quinyon Mitchell's stellar rookie season has garnered him national attention Eagles CB Quinyon Mitchell took the NFL's top pass-catchers out of games last year, and league circles are taking notice. ESPN released their latest position rankings on Thursday, listing the top-10 cornerbacks heading into the 2025 season. Mitchell came in at No. 9 according to league executives, coaches, and scouts. Here is the full top 10 from ESPN's poll: 9. Quinyon Mitchell, Philadelphia Eagles Mitchell, the youngest player on this list, turns 24 tomorrow, signaling the Eagles have the outside covered for years to come. Mitchell was stellar in the predraft process in 2024 and continued that momentum throughout his rookie season. When a receiver catches a pass in Mitchell's vicinity, he doesn't go far. Mitchell allowed an average of 1.5 yards after catch as the nearest defender in coverage last season, the fewest by any player with at least 30 targets. The next closest was Surtain at 1.9. In three playoff games, Mitchell allowed seven yards after the catch on five receptions. "Loved him coming out -- heard a lot about him throughout the season, and it looked like teams tried to find ways to throw away from him," an NFL coordinator said. "He proved to be able to handle 1s." "His biggest thing is confidence," an NFL passing game coordinator said. "He barely played press in college but got in people's pockets. He got really good at that." Mitchell was a projected top-15 pick coming into last year's draft, but a run of offensive selections pushed him down the board. When he was available at No. 22 overall, GM Howie Roseman sprinted to the podium and never looked back. The Eagles received early returns on their investment — Mitchell finished the 2024 season with 12 pass breakups and forfeited just 472 yards in coverage all year. Opposing quarterbacks completed 54.7% of pass attempts when targeting Mitchell. He only allowed 74 yards after the catch (4.6 yards per contest); receivers went down nearly instantly when catching balls in Mitchell's vicinity. Vic Fangio knew early last spring what he had in Mitchell. The Defensive Rookie of the Year runner-up played in 96% of the defensive snaps, holding down his side of the field opposite Darius Slay en route to a Super Bowl title. With Slay signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers in free agency, Mitchell is now the certified CB1 in Philadelphia for 2025 and beyond.

Jalen Hurts puts his championship mindset on display while discussing his work ethic

I don't think there's a mountain that I can't climb. With my work ethic, I know I will. It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when.' There have been many discussions about Jalen Hurts' position in the NFL quarterback rankings. After playing in two of the last three Super Bowls and winning one in February, the Philadelphia star quarterback has dedicated his off-season and summer to learning from past champions like Michael Jordan, Carmelo Anthony, and Derek Jeter, among others. The goal has always been to keep the "main thing, the main thing" while refocusing and adopting a championship mentality that'll allow the Eagles to repeat and be Super Bowl contenders for years to come. Hurts recently sat down with the Eagles' social media team to answer questions from fans. The answers revolved around his Faith. Family. Championships. During the sitdown, Hurts was asked about overcoming adversity and obstacles. Over the past three seasons, his 91.5 overall grade ranks fifth among all quarterbacks. Hurts is only the seventh NFL QB to appear in multiple Super Bowls and win a championship in their first five seasons. The other QBs who did so are Troy Aikman, Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, Ben Roethlisberger, Kurt Warner, and Russell Wilson.

Three Eagles pass rushers get new jersey numbers ahead of training camp

Josh Uche will be the third player in franchise history to wear No. 0 After months of waiting, the Eagles will get their Super Bowl rings on Friday night for one final celebration, before the team gathers on Tuesday for the start of training camp at the NovaCare Complex. Howie Roseman has retooled both sides of the football, and a defense that saw seven starters depart could be just as dominant, depending on several roster competitions. Three Eagles pass-rushers are switching jersey numbers ahead of training camp. We hinted toward a possible number change for Josh Uche earlier this month. Here are the new number assignments: For Ojulari, No. 13 is familiar as he wore that number at Georgia. The Eagles signed Uche and Ojulari to one-year deals this offseason following the departures of Josh Sweat (free agency) and Brandon Graham (retirement). Ojulari has been productive when healthy with 22.0 career sacks over his first four seasons. Uche's best year came in 2022 with New England, where he recorded 14 QB hits and 11.5 sacks. Philadelphia selected Powell-Ryland in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft to add edge depth. Powell-Ryland used smart hands and a diversified rush plan to accumulate 25.5 sacks over the last two seasons. He lacks length and speed but creates pressures by remaining varied and unpredictable. He uses accurate, violent hands to eliminate the punch and kick-start his bull rush. Powell-Ryland plays with a sturdy base and good leverage at the point, but he's unlikely to control the edge. NFL length will limit his early wins, so he'll need to keep developing his counters. The production is hard to ignore but modest traits and average athleticism will make it tough for his numbers to translate to the next level. Many fans wanted to see first-round pick Jihaad Campbell claim No. 0. We'll see if he sticks with No. 30 or claims a different number before the start of the season.
