Public Safety MMC begins crusade to tackle Midrand's drug problem
Tshwaku, who was part of the arrest of three suspected drug dealers with a staggering R200 000 worth of crystal meth in Halfway House, said drug dealers were running amok in the area.
He said, various operations, including Operation NomakanjaniManjeNamhlanje (No matter what, it will happen now and today), will be mounted to nab those who are still dealing in drugs.

Tshwaku said, following his visit to Midrand, that he is not happy with several drug rates, as some of the salons at Midrand taxi ranks harbour various types of drugs.
'Firstly, we would like to apologise to the residents of Region A, especially in Ivory Park. With the limited resources, we had to focus on areas like Diepsloot and the inner city, to ensure by-law enforcement when crime was high in the two areas. We had to take a focus-based approach to deal with that crime. Midrand CBD is no different, as it is also a high crime area.
And once a crime is committed in the CBD, then [the criminals] disperse to the nearby townships, such as Ivory Park and Rabie Ridge, for hiding,' said Tshwaku.

He said they would be doing this visible policing operation with intelligence and officials from his office. They will target various businesses, including unlicensed shebeens, scrap yards, and spaza shops, looking for legit permits.
Tshwaku said they will also be working with Crime Watch and the Home Affairs Department to tackle undocumented immigrants.
'There is a lot of noise from Carslwald as well. We will be coming there, focusing on nightlife to ensure that they follow their liquor license times. There has been a misalignment between us and Citizen Relations and Unit Management (CRUM). First, CRUM needs to oversee and inspect, and if they find something wrong, then, we will be able to enforce. They need to, first, be issued with a notice. Then, should the notice not be successful, we can enforce. We are working with CRUM to synchronise the system,' he added.

He urged the community to stand up and fight the mushrooming of illegal salons and spaza shops, who he believes are used to clean drug money.
'You know that salons are drug dens. We have got intel that some of those salons, the majority of them, are used as cleaning systems for [drug] money. People of Midrand… Stop whining and become the solution to the drug problem,' concluded Tshwaku.

Two police vehicles damaged during Tembisa protest
JOHANNESBURG - Two police vehicles have been damaged during running battles between police and angry Tembisa residents. The residents took to the streets on Monday morning, protesting over the high cost of electricity. The community said the new electricity charges, introduced on 1 July, make it hard to keep the lights on. The charges include fixed monthly fees of under R109 for single-phase connections and over R200 for three-phase connections. Police are continuing to fire rubber bullets periodically to disperse crowds, that have gathered to block roads. The streets are littered with rocks, broken glass, and rubble, while plumes of smoke rise from tyres that residents continue to set ablaze. Elderly residents sit on the pavements, clapping and singing struggle songs as younger men and women add more debris to the barricades. Residents tell EWN their frustration stems from what they call unaffordable electricity, describing the fixed monthly fees and double-digit tariff increases as an insult to an already struggling community. For now, officers remain at a distance, but residents show no sign of backing down.

Suspect denies charges in Kempton Park human trafficking case
A man accused in connection with a suspected human trafficking case in Birchleigh North appeared in the Kempton Park Regional Court this afternoon, July 18, for a formal bail application. The case relates to the rescue of a number of Ethiopian men who were allegedly held captive in a house on July 4. The victims were reportedly lured to South Africa under false pretences, assaulted, and held while their captors demanded large sums of money from their families for their release. The accused, Fekada Eshetu Dinago, faces charges of human trafficking, kidnapping, and extortion. The Kempton Express' request for court photography was denied by Dinago's legal representative and upheld by the court. Also read: Birchleigh North house raid uncovers 19 human trafficking victims During the court proceedings, Dinago, in an affidavit read by his lawyer, claimed he was contacted by the police on the day of his arrest after his cousin, identified as Ashenavhe Marcus, provided officers with his contact number. He said he met with the police and was surprised when they allegedly demanded R10 000 for the release of his relative. 'I told the police what they were doing was wrong and that I would report them. All hell broke loose as soon as I said that. I was placed in handcuffs, told I was forward, and that I would be taught a lesson,' Dinago stated. Dinago alleged he witnessed money being exchanged for the release of the victims and claimed he was arrested because he refused to pay a bribe. He added that on arriving at the police station, he was informed he was being charged with human trafficking. 'I am said to be charged with human trafficking, but I am informed that the children I allegedly trafficked are appearing in another court for illegal immigration,' Dinago stated, challenging the State to subject him to an identity parade. However, Regional Court Prosecutor Sibongile Nxumalo presented evidence from investigating officer Sergeant Suzan Ngwanatsamago Maloka of the Hawks. Maloka testified that on July 4, officers received information about a group of Ethiopian nationals being held at a property on Julia Street in Norkem Park without their consent. On arrival, nine Ethiopian men without valid documentation were found locked inside the house. Some were found naked and locked inside bedrooms with reinforced steel doors, while three had sustained injuries, with blood visible on the floors. The injured victims were taken to hospital. Maloka alleged that while police were detaining the suspects at Norkem Park SAPS, Dinago arrived and allegedly offered officers R200 000 for the release of the detained men. She further claimed Dinago attempted to force his way into the holding cells, blocking the cell gate. The detained men reportedly moved away from him and gestured to officers that they were afraid of him. Also read: Gauteng is human trafficking hot spot Maloka testified that when officers visited Dinago's stated address in Swazi-Inn, Thembisa, as part of the court's verification process, a woman at the property denied knowing Dinago. A second address linked to Dinago also proved unreliable, raising concerns about his ties to the community. 'For the fact that the accused provided a wrong address during his arrest and as the matter falls under Schedule 6, there is a likelihood that if released, he will evade his court appearances or trial,' Maloka said. She added that there were concerns about the accused endangering public safety or committing further offences if released on bail, and highlighted that a panga was found in his possession, while three victims sustained critical injuries. Maloka also informed the court that Dinago, an Ethiopian national, holds an asylum seeker permit, which has been sent to the Department of Home Affairs for verification. The rescue operation followed after Freedom Front Plus councillor for Kempton Park, Jean Kriek, received reports of people calling for help from inside the property. Kriek went to the house to investigate and contacted the police, EMPD, and a private security company, leading to the rescue of the men, who were then taken to hospital for treatment. EMPD arrests two for drug offences in Tsakani Tsakani – The EMPD Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) apprehended two men in separate incidents for drug-related offences in Tsakani on July 9. According to Zweli Dlamini, the CoE spokesperson, officers on patrol witnessed the deal take place and pounced on a 43-year-old man. 'He was arrested and charged with dealing in drugs. The officers confiscated the illicit substances, estimated to have a street value of R400. 'In a separate incident, officers followed up on information about a drug peddler operating at the Tsakane Shopping Centre. On arrival, they caught the 26-year-old man with an illicit substance with an estimated street value of R200,' explained Dlamini. 'His stash was seized, and he was charged with possession of drugs.' Both suspects were detained at the Tsakane Police Station and will soon appear in the Tsakane Magistrate's Court.
