Barbie designers Mario Paglino and Gianni Grossi were killed in a car crash Sunday with the doll brand writing in a tribute, 'Barbie is better because they loved the brand.'
The business and romantic partners died after 82-year-old Egidio Ceriano, driving the wrong way on Italy's A4 Turin-Milan highway, collided head-on with their car in Lombardy, according to Italian news outlet ANSA. Ceriano is accused of driving about four miles in the wrong direction before the crash.
Amodio Valerio Giurni, a bank employee, and his wife, Silvia Moramacro, were also in the doll designers' car, according to the Italian outlet. Giurni died and Moramacro was hospitalized.
Ceriano, who also died in the crash, had renewed his license two years ago, ANSA reported.
In the wake of the crash, Mattel, the maker of Barbie, released a statement on Instagram: "The Barbie team is heartbroken by the loss of Mario Paglino and Gianni Grossi, two treasured creators and Mattel collaborators who brought joy and artistry to the world of Barbie as Magnia2000."
Paglino and Grossi's Magina2000 company specialized in custom dolls. Their work earned them the Barbie Best Friend Award from Barbie fashion designer Carol Spencer in 2016, according to the duo's website.
The two are known for their celebrity dolls, which included singers Cher and Lady Gaga and actresses Sarah Jessica Parker and Sophia Loren.
But the most notable celebrity dolls they created were dedicated to Madonna. After being part of the London 'Simply Madonna' Exhibit in 2009, Paglino and Grossi met the singer in person on 'The Graham Norton Show.'
"Their generosity was boundless, creating countless dolls to be auctioned to benefit charities close to fellow collectors' hearts," Mattel's statement read.
In 2015, the pair auctioned one of their dolls at the National Barbie Convention for $15,000 for charity.
Mattel concluded its statement by writing: 'Barbie is better because they loved the brand, and our beloved collector community is richer for having known them and shared in their passion. Barbie honors their memory with deep gratitude."

A man was left floored when he bought a huge feast packed full of flavour and received the bill for the whole lot, warning tourists against visiting certain places Italy isn't known for being cheap and cheerful, however it is a stunning place for a holiday. That's why, when one man ordered a feast in a popular tourist hotspot and he received the bill, he was left floored and couldn't believe his eyes. Fernando Massana, who regularly posts his foodie hacks on TikTok to his 114,000 followers, shared that he managed to eat a whole lot of food for less than £5, but he warned other holidaymakers to be aware of the warning signs that they may be getting ripped off. ‌ Fernando, who posts as @rockinkitchensicily on the site, recently visited Italian spot Palermo in Sicily. There, he went to a local market to see how much—and what—he could eat for just €1 (86p). ‌ In a clip, which garnered 3.8m views and over 382,000 likes, he revealed the huge feast he chowed down for €5 (£4.30). ‌ The 51-year-old began with a ball of fresh mozzarella, before picking up a sfincione, a type of focaccia-like pizza. He also grabbed a homemade arancini, which he washed down with freshly squeezed lemon juice. But there was even more. ‌ For dessert, Fernando opted for a stuffed-to-the-brim cannoli. In the comments, people were shocked at the amount of food you could get for such a small price. "For €1 in Denmark, you get to stand 10 metres outside a bakery and take one deep sniff," someone joked. ‌ Another added: "For €1 in Dublin, you can light a candle and pray for food". A TikTok user pointed out that in London, it would be "£5+ per item," rather than less than a fiver for the whole feast Fernando enjoyed. "The rest of Europe could never," somebody else pointed out, highlighting how expensive things have become lately. ‌ Fernando, who is from Catania, Sicily, notes that the spots he went to are very specific, and finding food for these cheap prices is rather rare. He said: "It's not a general thing to eat for €1. It's easy to go to a tourist trap, especially in Ballarò market and Catania. Go with the flow. ‌ "If you see pictures of the food everywhere, [it's] not good. If you see guys pulling you into eating at that specific spot, be mindful. "It's not always bad, but possibly more expensive, and also even a tourist trap. It may still be a great meal, simply because Italian food in England [isn't] as good". He said that if you walk a few minutes away from the tourist locations, that's where the hidden gems can be found, saying you shouldn't be "shy to ask how much something is before you order". Fernando added: "Menus with prices aren't a thing at the markets. And also ask for local wine to save [money]. It will come in a jug, not a glass bottle, but it will be very good".
