Venezuelan Little League team denied U.S. visas, won't take part in senior World Series

A Venezuelan Little League team has been denied U.S. visas, with Little League International announcing that the team will not be able to participate in the 2025 Little League Senior Baseball World Series. Cacique Mara, a team representing Maracaibo, earned its place by winning the Latin American region qualifying tournament in June. That event's runner-up, Santa María de Aguayo from Tamaulipas, Mexico, will replace the Venezuelan team at the Little League Senior Baseball World Series, which began on Saturday, July 26. 'The Cacique Mara Little League team from Venezuela was unfortunately unable to obtain the appropriate visas to travel to the Senior League Baseball World Series,' Little League International said in a statement, calling the development 'extremely disappointing, especially to these young athletes.' 'It is a mockery on the part of Little League to keep us here in Bogotá with the hope that our children can fulfill their dreams of participating in a world championship,' the team said in a statement to the Associated Press. 'What do we do with so much injustice, what do we do with the pain that was caused to our children?' The Little League Senior Baseball World Series is a different event than the Little League World Series that takes place in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, with the Senior version involving players aged 13-16 and play taking place on a larger field. The Senior Baseball World Series is being held in Easley, South Carolina, from July 26 to Aug. 2. The more well-known Little League World Series, which is for players aged 10-12, is set for Aug. 13-24. President Donald Trump's administration on June 4 listed Venezuela and six other nations as being subject to partial travel restrictions, while 12 more nations were given full-scale travel bans. While Cacique Mara was denied the necessary visas by the U.S. Department of State, teams from Australia, Canada and the Czech Republic will still participate, along with Santa María de Aguayo. The final participants in the International bracket hail from Puerto Rico, which is a territory of the United States. Little League: New Jersey Little Leaguer suspended for bat flip; dad files restraining order The Venezuelan team is the latest example of the sports world colliding with the Trump administration's crackdown on immigration and foreign visitors. In June, the Senegalese women's basketball team abandoned plans to hold a training camp in the U.S. after a significant portion of their roster and staff were denied visas. The Cuban women's volleyball team suffered a similar fate weeks ago after being denied visas to participate in the NORCECA Women's Final Four tournament in Puerto Rico. Earlier this month, Brazilian table tennis player Hugo Calderano was unable to participate in a tournament in Las Vegas, reportedly due to a 2023 visit to Cuba for an Olympic qualifying tournament. Athletes, team staff members and relatives were supposedly exempted from the travel ban, with the Haitian national soccer team able to participate in the recently concluded Concacaf Gold Cup. The soccer world has been particularly concerned about travel difficulties, with the Gold Cup and Club World Cup taking place simultaneously this summer. Trump was a visible figure at the Club World Cup final, and one version of that tournament's trophy remains at the White House. The United States is set to host the 2026 men's World Cup next year, and there are unanswered questions about whether every qualified team will be able to participate. Iran, one of the nations subject to an outright travel ban from the Trump administration, sealed its qualification in March. Of the other nations subject to full bans or significant restrictions, Burundi, Equatorial Guinea, Haiti, Libya, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Togo and Venezuela are all currently still alive in World Cup qualifying.

Team from Clarendon Hills takes Little League state title

Brian Herold has had a feeling that this might be a very special summer for the Clarendon Hills Little League Baseball team. It's a feeling that's been growing for the last four years, and when it came time for tournament games leading to the Little League World Series, he was proved correct. Herold is the manager of the 12-and-under team that won the league's first-ever state championship at that level Wednesday, July 24 in Elgin with a 2-0 victory over La Grange Park. The win advances Clarendon Hills to the Great Lakes Region Tournament in Whitestown, Indiana. Clarendon Hills opens play at 7 p.m. Aug. 2 against a team from Indiana. The Great Lakes group also includes teams from Kentucky, Ohio, and Michigan. The championship game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday Aug. 6. Several games will be shown on ESPN. Clarendon Hills advanced to the 14-team State Tournament by winning the District 11 competition in Hinsdale and went on to dominate the state field in Elgin. Clarendon Hills outscored its opponents, 60-7, while compiling a perfect, 6-0 record. 'The differential is misleading,' Herold said. 'We played some very good teams during the State Tournament, but managed to play mistake-free baseball. Our pitching and defense were outstanding and consistent throughout the tournament.' Along with being the manager of this year's 12U team. Herold was the manager two years ago of the Clarendon Hills team that won the State Championship in the 10-year-old tournament, and many of those players were part of this year's 12U team. But Herold's good feelings about these boys goes back even further, 'since they were 8 years old.' 'We recognized their talent, willingness to work hard and get better, and an appreciation to work together as a team,' he said. After losing in the district tournament to Naperville, which ultimately won the state title, the team has put in extra work to get better, he added. While he felt his team was ready for success this year, Herold said he expected the District 11 competition to be challenging. 'Our district is arguably the most difficult in the state,' he said. 'We knew we couldn't take any team lightly and had to approach every game like it was the championship.' Because bracket-play seeding from the first two rounds was determined by record and fewest runs allowed, making the right choices about the pitching rotation became very important, Herold said. 'When we achieved the number one seed in bracket play, we knew we had a better path, based on our pitching eligibility,' he said. 'Everything lined up for us. Our pitching depth is a major advantage of our team. We used seven pitchers during the tournament and feel confident in each one of them in any situation.' Player Luke Schaller was outstanding on the mound for Clarendon Hills in the state championship game. He pitched all six innings and gave up only four hits, while striking out three and walking one. Clarendon Hills scored its first run in the third inning on an RBI single by Brody Herold, driving in Hudson Lauerman. The second run came in the fourth inning when Connor Lazar's base hit drove in Liam Harrigan. 'We recognize that this is a very special group that has achieved something unprecedented for a town of our size,' Herold said. 'We also have an appreciation for the investment that our town puts into the game of Little League and the opportunities it provides.' Herold said the approach in getting ready for the region tournament is no different than what it's been all season. 'We highlight 'perfect practice makes perfect.'' He said.' The boys have committed to putting in the necessary work. Our goal is to win each inning of every game we play. We have a very balanced team with solid pitching and defense. We certainly hope the journey continues beyond the Region, but we are going to play one game at a time.'

Fans Turn to Crowdfunding as Manchester United Eye Alexander Isak

Desperate Times at Old Trafford as Fans Launch Isak GoFundMe Drive Unusual Measures in a Modern Football Landscape There are signs of desperation and defiance from Manchester United's fanbase this summer. With the club entangled in financial turbulence and glaring gaps in attack, supporters have taken the remarkable step of launching a GoFundMe campaign titled 'Sign Isak for Manchester United' to raise £150million in a bid to lure Swedish striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United. This extraordinary crowdfunding initiative, highlighted by Isak to Manchester United GoFundMe Page, came after reports that Isak is open to a move away, having missed Newcastle's pre-season fixtures at Celtic and on their Asian tour. 'United need a striker. We need hope. So, let's do what the Glazers won't… and raise £150 million to bring Alexander Isak to Old Trafford,' said Isaac MUFC, the fan behind the page. Isak's Future Up in the Air Newcastle reportedly value the striker at £150million, and interest in the 24-year-old is intensifying. Isak has also been linked with Liverpool and Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal. His style—blistering pace, fluid movement, and composure in front of goal—would undoubtedly enhance any top-six Premier League attack. Photo: IMAGO That alone makes the humour and heartbreak behind the GoFundMe effort so powerful. United, having spent over £100million already on Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, still appear short in the final third. But instead of decisive boardroom action, it's the fans attempting to complete the hat-trick. Protest or Pipe Dream? While clearly tongue-in-cheek, there's a pointed message in the initiative. '50% of Proceeds will go to Unicef UK because if we can't bring Isak to Manchester, we can still bring some good to the world. The other 50% will go towards paying back some of my student debt because United aren't the only ones in a financial crisis,' reads the campaign. This isn't about genuinely bankrolling a blockbuster transfer, but rather exposing the powerlessness many supporters feel. After Sir Jim Ratcliffe openly discussed United's financial woes and amid a raft of staff layoffs, the GoFundMe doubles as satire and sorrow. Modern Football, Unreal Demands What this bizarre but creative campaign underscores is the financial chasm between fans and the elite decision-makers. United's supporters have often been vocal against ownership, and this attempt to 'do what the Glazers won't' is emblematic of a wider frustration. Isak may never pull on the red shirt of Manchester United, but his name will now be forever linked to a movement that managed to say more about the state of a football club than any official statement ever could. Our View – EPL Index There's no doubt this GoFundMe campaign is equal parts satire and despair, but it also paints a stark picture of the disconnect between fans and club leadership. That Manchester United, one of the richest clubs in the world, could find itself the subject of a transfer whip-round feels almost too bizarre to believe. Supporters clearly crave a player like Isak. He's modern, mobile and clinical. But no amount of crowdfunding will bridge the chasm created by years of financial missteps and poor recruitment. Even if every United fan in the world donated £10, they'd still fall far short of the quoted £150million. This is a joke with teeth. It's a protest against a model where clubs are sold dreams but delivered bureaucracy and cuts. Fans are tired, and this campaign makes a bigger statement than chants or banners ever could. But let's be clear: Isak is heading elsewhere unless United act like United again.
