Blue Jays sweep Angels, win eighth in a row
Bo Bichette homered, Kevin Gausman struck out nine in 5 2/3 innings and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the visiting Los Angeles Angels 3-2 on Sunday afternoon.
The Blue Jays swept the three-game series to extend their season-best winning streak to eight games.
Mike Trout hit a solo home run for the Angels, who stranded 12 runners. Taylor Ward added three hits, a walk, an RBI and a stolen base.
Trout homered to right against Gausman on a fastball with two outs in the first.
The Angels loaded the bases in the fourth on a single, a walk and an error before Gustavo Campero bounced back to Gausman to start an inning-ending, home-to-first double play.
Bichette atoned for his error in the top of the inning by driving an 0-1 changeup from Tyler Anderson (2-6) off the facing of the second deck for a home run to lead off the home fourth. Toronto added a run in the inning when Myles Straw doubled and scored on Joey Loperfido's single to right. Loperfido was thrown out after rounding first base.
The Angels tied the game in the fifth. Chad Stevens led off with a single, Trout walked with two outs and Ward hit an RBI single to right.
Ryan Burr (1-0), activated from the injured list Sunday, replaced Gausman with a runner at first and two outs in the sixth. He gave up a single before getting Nolan Schanuel to fly out. Gausman allowed two runs, seven hits and three walks.
Bichette led off the home sixth with a walk and took third on Alejandro Kirk's flare single to left. Davis Schneider hit an RBI single to left for Toronto's go-ahead run.
Brock Burke replaced Anderson, who allowed three runs, eight hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Burke ended the threat with a double-play grounder and a groundout.
Burr pitched around a walk and a stolen base with three strikeouts in the seventh.
Toronto closer Jeff Hoffman pitched a perfect ninth with the help of two line-drive outs to earn his 22nd save.

White Sox hope to put an end to Blue Jays' winning streak

With Toronto's tear at nine games entering Tuesday's visit to the Chicago White Sox, someone theoretically must contribute a repeat heroic performance to keep the streak alive. Toronto will seek to secure its fifth straight series victory after earning an 8-4 win in the series opener Monday. Joey Loperfido, Nathan Lukes and Addison Barger homered while Bo Bichette and Loperfido delivered two hits apiece. Toronto navigated a late White Sox rally to hold on. The Blue Jays are on their first nine-game winning streak since the 2015 club won 12 straight. Monday marked the home debut of White Sox rookie shortstop Colson Montgomery, who walked and scored a run. Leadoff man Mike Tauchman delivered three hits, including a two-run single. 'We're getting some good at-bats and good swings and hopefully we can keep putting those together tomorrow,' Chicago manager Will Venable said. Toronto has clicked since losing two of three to the visiting White Sox from June 20-22. The Blue Jays have won 12 of 14 while benefiting from solid pitching and an opportunistic attack. Shortly after earning plaudits as American League Player of the Week, Blue Jays designated hitter George Springer went 0-for-5 Monday. But the rest of the lineup picked him up as Toronto won again. This time, it was Loperfido who excelled in his second game since being recalled from Triple-A Buffalo. '(Toronto's) games are on ... in our clubhouse down there. Civale (1-5, 4.60 ERA) is 0-3 with a 4.29 ERA in four starts with the White Sox. He is coming off Thursday's road loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, when he yielded five runs, two earned, and five hits in five innings. Civale lost to the host Blue Jays on June 21, allowing five runs and nine hits in a season-high seven innings. Civale issued just one walk for the fourth time this season but proved susceptible to the long ball, as Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. both reached him for solo home runs. Toronto righty Chris Bassitt took a no-decision against the White Sox one day later, allowing one run and three hits in six innings with one walk and seven strikeouts. Bassitt will start for the Blue Jays on Tuesday. In his last start, Bassitt (8-4, 4.32) pitched 5 2/3 innings of three-run, eight-hit ball to defeat the New York Yankees, picking up his first win since June 10. He walked three and struck out nine, one shy of his season high. Bassitt has pitched effectively versus the White Sox in his career, going 5-2 with a 2.78 ERA in 10 starts. Civale is 2-4 with a 5.40 ERA in six starts against Toronto.

After producing sacrifice bunts in his first two plate appearances, Rocchio broke a 4-all tie by drilling an 0-2 slider from Astros reliever Steven Okert over the outstretched glove of Houston third baseman Isaac Paredes. Angel Martinez and Bo Naylor scored to provide the Guardians a 6-4 advantage. The Astros, who rallied from a four-run deficit with homers by Taylor Trammell and Paredes in the bottom of the fifth, sliced the Guardians' two-run margin in half when Victor Caratini socked a solo homer to right field with two outs in the sixth off Guardians reliever Matt Festa (2-2). Festa limited the damage to a lone run. Right-handers Paul Sewald and Hunter Gaddis followed by working a perfect inning of relief each before Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase retired the Astros in order in the ninth for his 19th save. The Reds, who have lost three straight, have managed just three runs over their last 31 innings. Guardians snap 10-game losing streak with 7-5 win over Astros
HOUSTON (AP) — José Ramírez and David Fry homered and Brayan Rocchio added a two-run double as the Cleveland Guardians beat the Houston Astros 7-5 on Monday night to snap a 10-game skid. The victory is Cleveland's first since June 25th and comes a day after losing to Detroit in 10 innings Sunday. The score was tied with two outs in the sixth and the Guardians had two on when Rocchio doubled to left field off Steven Okert to put them on top 6-4. With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Victor Caratini connected off Matt Festa (2-2) on a shot to right field to get Houston within 1. However, Fry connected with two outs in the ninth to give Cleveland an insurance run. Emmanuel Clase pitched a perfect ninth for his 19th save. Taylor Trammell added a three-run home run for his first hit this season and Isaac Paredes had a solo shot for the AL West-leading Astros, who lost for just the second time in eight games. Cleveland starter Tanner Bibee allowed four hits and four runs in 4 2/3 innings. Colton Gordon (3-2) yielded seven hits and five runs in 5 2/3 innings for the Astros. There were runners on second and third with no outs in the fifth when Steven Kwan lined an RBI single that hit Gordon in the head. The pitcher fell to the ground as his cap flew off but quickly got to his feet. He was checked on by a trainer and threw some warmup pitches before remaining in the game. Ramírez homered to left field with two outs in the inning to make it 4-0. Trammell's shot to the seats in left field cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the inning.
