The Outer Worlds 2 will no longer be Microsoft's first $80 Xbox game

The Verge7 days ago
Microsoft-owned developer Obsidian Entertainment is announcing a price drop for the The Outer Worlds 2 today. The game was originally supposed to debut at $79.99 in October, but it's now going back to the regular $69.99 Xbox game price.
Microsoft announced earlier this year that it would be raising the price of new Xbox first-party games from $69.99 to $79.99, alongside increases to its consoles and controllers. The move to suddenly drop the price of The Outer Worlds 2 is a clear sign that preorders haven't gone too well and that gamers are rejecting Microsoft's initial move to $79.99 Xbox games.
If you've already purchased the game then refunds will be handled by the Microsoft Store, Steam, PlayStation store or wherever you preordered The Outer Worlds 2.
Other first-party Xbox games coming this holiday will also be sold at $69.99, instead of Microsoft's new $79.99 pricing. 'We're focused on bringing players incredible worlds to explore, and will keep our full priced holiday releases, including The Outer Worlds 2, at $69.99 – in line with current market conditions,' says an unnamed Xbox spokesperson in a statement to IGN.
It will be interesting to see whether Microsoft continues to push its new Xbox game pricing in the new year, or whether this is a sign that it's fully rethinking the increase to $79.99.

Ted Cruz Is Weirdly Invested In The Backlash To Sydney Sweeney's Jeans Ad

Add Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas) to the chorus of conservatives who are defending Sydney Sweeney amid heated backlash to her American Eagle campaign. On Tuesday, the Texas Republican offered a snide, politically charged take on the controversy on X, formerly Twitter. 'Wow. Now the crazy Left has come out against beautiful women,' Cruz wrote alongside a New York Post article about the campaign. 'I'm sure that will poll well...' He doubled down on his remarks while appearing on Fox News in a segment that aired later on Tuesday, using the Sweeney furor as an example of 'how extreme' he feels the Democratic Party has become. 'This week the Democrats have decided, with the Sydney Sweeney jeans ad, that they hate beautiful women,' he said. 'That's just a little nuts for them to say, 'I'm sorry, we're the Democrats. Beautiful women are no longer acceptable in our society.'' Sweeney, best known for her portrayal of Cassandra 'Cassie' Howard on HBO's 'Euphoria,' has faced a barrage of criticism this week following the release of her American Eagle ads, which play off the words 'genes' and 'jeans.' 'Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color,' the actor explains in one of the ads. 'My jeans are blue.' A narrator then reads the tagline: 'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.' Though the ad seems to be an intended as an homage to Brooke Shields' 1980 Calvin Klein campaign ― also controversial for its time ― some fans on social media felt it contained white supremacist undertones. Watch one of Sydney Sweeney's American Eagle ads below. 'Having Sydney Sweeney talk about her genes/jeans is already a bad look for American Eagle, but calling her genes/jeans 'blue' takes it even further, hinting at 'blue blood,' a term historically tied to whiteness and aristocratic lineage,' the Instagram account Style Analytics wrote. 'It's a nod to eugenics, aligning the brand with the growing conservative/right-wing/white supremacy movement ... This is just one way brands have recently been attempting to plaicate to conservatives.' Many echoed those sentiments, including one TikTok user who called the ad 'what happens when you have a bunch of white folk who all look and think the same.' Added another on X: 'This is so Hitler like what.' Neither Sweeney nor American Eagle have yet to respond to the criticism over the campaign. Cruz, however, is among a growing number of conservatives, including White House Communications Director Steven Cheung and former Fox News host Megyn Kelly, in defending the ads. Related... ARM Holdings reports soft guidance after mixed fiscal Q1 results; shares slump

– Arm Holdings reported softer guidance Wednesday following mixed first-quarter fiscal 2026 results even as rising AI and automotive demand continue to underpin performance. Arm Holdings ADR (NASDAQ:ARM) fell more than 8% in recent afterhours trading Wednesday. For the three months ended June 30, 2025, Arm Holdings plc reported adjusted earnings per share of $0.35 on revenue of $1.05 billion, in line with analyst expectations for EPS of $0.35 and revenue of $1.06 billion. Royalty revenue rose 25% year-over-year to $585 million, fueled by accelerating adoption of Armv9 architecture, the growing number of Arm Compute Subsystems chips shipping for datacenter, automotive, and mobile applications, and expanded customer workloads featuring AI and edge computing. Looking ahead, Arm's guidance for the fiscal second quarter fell short of estimates. The company forecasted non-GAAP EPS between $0.29 and $0.37, slightly below the consensus estimate of $0.35, and revenue of $1.01 billion to $1.11 billion, around Wall Street's $1.07 billion midpoint estimate.
