More tax, quicker refunds: It's time to widen India's tax net

India Today21 hours ago
India's tax system has undergone significant improvements in recent years. Taxpayers are paying advance tax on time and receiving refunds as early as seven days after filing their returns. But while India's tax engine is revving harder, are there enough drivers?Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in a conclave with the principal chief commissioners of the Central Board of Direct Taxes on June 23, said that the government has undertaken several significant reforms in recent years, particularly in faceless assessment, e-verification system, tax exemptions and changes in slab rates, and digital service delivery. She also emphasised the need for the timely processing of tax refunds and the proactive resolution of taxpayer grievances.advertisementWhat portion of total tax collected is refunded? The portion of gross tax collected that is refunded has touched an all-time high of 17.6 per cent in the financial year 2024–25. It was 13 per cent in FY2014–15. While the rise in refunds indicates an efficient tax system, it also highlights the excess tax collected from individuals.
Rising gap between gross and net collectionsAs the refunds rise, the gap between the gross and net direct tax collections is also widening. In F2015, the gap was 0.8 percentage points. This swelled to a high of 1.5 percentage points in FY2025, according to the CBDT. This indicates that more tax is being collected, which has to be refunded after the end of the year.Where are the taxpayers? There were only 7.5 crore returns filed by individuals in the assessment year 2023-24, against a projected adult population of around 97 crore, according to the Income Tax Department. This brings the tax base to a mere seven to eight per cent.Notably, more than 50 per cent of the adult population file income tax returns in the United States. The low tax base is an indication of a disproportionate burden of taxes on the salaried class. It also points towards the exclusion of the informal economy.Meanwhile, among those filing income tax returns, 27 per cent of the individuals have a gross average annual income of Rs 7 lakh, 17 per cent have income of Rs 4.8 lakh, eight per cent have Rs 12 lakh, and seven per cent have Rs 3 lakh as annual income.- EndsTune InMust Watch

Elon Musk's xAI will pay up to Rs 3.7 crore to software engineers who can make anime girl avatars

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI is making headlines again. This time, for posting a rather unusual job listing. The company is looking for software engineers who can help build interactive AI avatars that resemble anime characters, and it's willing to pay big money for it. According to the job post, selected candidates could earn between $180,000 to $440,000 (roughly Rs 1.5 crore to Rs 3.7 crore) per year, excluding additional benefits and listing, posted on xAI's careers page under the title Fullstack Engineer - Waifus', is related to a new experimental feature within the company's Grok AI platform, according to Business Insider. The word 'waifu' is often used by anime fans to describe fictional female characters they feel attached to romantically. And in this case, the name appears to be linked to one of the AI avatars launched on this week, xAI introduced two AI 'companions' on the iOS version of the Grok app—'Ani', a Japanese anime-inspired character dressed in a corset dress, and 'Rudi', a cartoon red panda with a split personality. Rudi's alternate version, 'Bad Rudi,' is designed to behave more aggressively, offering a contrasting experience to its default personality. A third character, described as a male anime figure, is also expected to be added to the platform soon. Interestingly, while Musk initially stated that these avatars would be available only to premium users subscribed to Super Grok, they currently appear to be accessible to all Grok users, even those without a paid job description calls for skilled engineers with a strong background in multimedia systems and product development. According to the listing, xAI is seeking talent capable of making real-time avatar interactions fast, scalable, and stable. The role is based in Palo Alto, California, placing it at the heart of Silicon the idea of anime-style AI avatars might seem light-hearted or experimental, xAI's move points towards a larger goal, building interactive AI companions that feel more personalised and emotionally engaging. However, the company has already faced some criticism for how far it's willing to push that indicate that Ani, the anime companion, can behave flirtatiously and even change into lingerie if a user continues to engage with her. Bad Rudi, on the other hand, has been found using foul language and insults when its aggressive mode is activated. These behaviours have raised eyebrows and sparked debate over how AI interactions are being designed, especially when emotional manipulation and suggestive content are controversy follows another recent issue faced by xAI. Earlier this month, Grok faced backlash after generating offensive and antisemitic responses. In one instance, the AI referred to itself as "MechaHitler", a term linked to a fictional video game character. The company later apologised and blamed the behaviour on deprecated code that made the AI susceptible to replicating inappropriate user content.- Ends
