Haiti's renowned Hotel Oloffson is burned down by gangs

The Guardian08-07-2025
Haiti's once-illustrious Hotel Oloffson, a beloved Gothic gingerbread building that inspired books, hosted parties and attracted visitors from Mick Jagger to Haitian presidents, has been burned down by gangs.
Hundreds of Haitians and foreigners mourned as the news spread across social media, with the hotel manager confirming the fire on X. Even though gang violence had forced the hotel in Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, to close in recent years, many had hoped it would reopen.
'It birthed so much culture and expression,' said Riva Précil, a Haitian-American singer who lived in the hotel from age five to 15. In a tearful phone interview, Précil recalled how she learned to swim, dance and sing at the Oloffson.
Longtime hotel manager Richard Morse, who had been overseeing the property remotely from the US since the hotel's closure in 2022, told the Associated Press on Monday that for several months, rumours had circulated that the hotel had been damaged by fire.
'So when I heard Sunday morning that it burned, I did what I usually do, which is call someone who has drones and have them go take a look,' he said. 'This time, when they called back, they said something like, 'take a seat'. I knew then that this wasn't like the other times.'
The attack on the area began late on Saturday, according to James Jean-Louis, who lives in the hills above the Oloffson. He said he watched the flames as he and other residents were chased out while police and gangs exchanged heavy gunfire.
Journalists are unable to visit the hotel and verify the damage because gangs control the area, making it inaccessible. Patrick Durandis, the director of the Institute for Safeguarding National Heritage, also confirmed the fire in a message to AP.
In its heyday the hotel attracted artists, intellectuals and politicians from Haiti and beyond, including Jackie Kennedy Onassis and Tennessee Williams. It also survived coups, dictatorships and the devastating 2010 earthquake.
Morse said he was reluctant to talk about what happened to the hotel given that in Haiti 'so many people are dying and being raped and losing everything that I don't want the focus to be on the hotel'.
Morse spent nearly 30 years at the Oloffson. It's where he met his wife, had his children and started his band, RAM.
'There's no life without hope, so we have to consider bringing Haiti back and bringing the hotel back and bringing the art and the culture back,' he said.
The Oloffson served as a presidential summer palace in the early 1900s and then became a US Marine Corps hospital before a Swedish sea captain converted it into a hotel in the 1930s.
It also served as inspiration for the fictional Hotel Trianon in Graham Greene's 1966 novel The Comedians, set in Haiti under the brutal dictatorship of François Duvalier, best known as Papa Doc.
In real life, tourism dwindled under the Duvaliers, and the hotel became a respite for aid workers and foreign correspondents.

Convictions after two young friends killed in machete attacks months apart

Two teenage friends aged just 14 and 15 were killed in gang-related machete attacks four months apart, it can now be reported. Daejaun Campbell cried out 'I'm 15, don't let me die' after he was ambushed in Woolwich, south-east London, on September 22 last year, the Old Bailey heard. On Wednesday, a boy aged 17, was found guilty of his murder after a jury deliberated for more than 19 hours. Co-accused Marko Balaz, 19, from Abbey Wood, south-east London, was found not guilty of murder, but convicted of manslaughter. A third defendant, Jacob Losiewicz, 18, also from Abbey Wood, was cleared of wrongdoing. It can now be reported that Daejaun was friends with 14-year-old Kelyan Bokassa, who was fatally stabbed by two 16-year-old boys with machetes on a bus in Woolwich months later on January 7. Aspiring rapper Kelyan, nicknamed Grippa, had featured in a YouTube music video entitled Gotta Eat – in which he was seen crouching beside a floral tribute to Daejaun. Last Friday, two 16-year-old youths were detained for at least 15 years and 10 months after pleading guilty at the Old Bailey to Kelyan's murder. The two boys' murders, though not directly related, bore striking similarities and have resulted in pleas by their families to end the 'senseless killings'. Last week, Kelyan's mother Marie Bokassa made an appeal for authorities to do more to stop the violence, saying: 'Our streets at bleeding.' In the wake of Daejaun's murder, his family released a statement in which Daejaun was described as 'naturally gifted, intelligent, creative and musically talented'. They said: 'The brutal manner which Daejaun was taken away from us is sad, and he not the first young person nor will he be the last, this senseless killing needs to stop.' Both killings had been linked to street gang culture with Daejaun described as being exploited and groomed by older youths. Daejaun was allegedly targeted for a 'gang check' when he was spotted near a house the defendants were visiting. Prosecutor Mukul Chawla KC had said he was attacked by Balaz and the 17-year-old boy. He said a witness had heard Daejaun screaming and calling for 'help' as he was stabbed. He also threw a large knife that he was carrying although it appears to have only hit a metal fence or railing and broken into pieces, the court had heard. The 17-year-old attacker was caught on video dropping his machete and leaning down to pick it up as he made off. Daejaun fell to his knees in the street having suffered two stab wounds and six superficial cuts. Losiewicz had driven the others to the scene and was nearby, the court had heard. Mr Chawla told jurors the motive for the killing was unclear but that Daejaun had been carrying money and drugs, possibly crack cocaine. He said: 'He may therefore have been a person exploited, by reason of his age if for no other reason, to be used as carrier and supplier of drugs by organisations that will use younger people and other vulnerable people for those purposes. 'That may be or may have been the reason why he was attacked.' The two older defendants admitted being at the scene but denied being involved in Daejaun's killing. The 17-year-old youth admitted the killing but claimed he acted in self defence and alone. He had previously pleaded guilty to possessing an offensive weapon – a machete – in a public place. The 17-year-old also had previous convictions for carrying a 'kukri' style knife in 2021 and having a machete and affray relating to a fight in October 2023 in which a male suffered a cut to his face and a stab wound. The court heard Balaz had previous convictions for carrying knives and possession of cannabis. Mr Losiewicz had no convictions to his name.

Brit fugitive wanted over 'horrific' UK kidnap and murder is arrested in the Caribbean over separate child abduction claim

A British man wanted over a 'horrific' UK kidnap and murder has been arrested in the Caribbean over a separate child abduction allegation. West Midlands Police said they believed Kevin Wooden had fled the country when they released a picture of him five years ago and put a £10,000 reward on the table as they appealed for information following the death in a specialist burns unit of Polish national Tomasz Samel. The 45-year-old suffered 75 per cent burns after his abduction in March 2019 by two men posing as Interpol officers in hi-vis vests outside his home in Handsworth, Birmingham. Later the same day he banged on the door of a property in Bickerstaffe, Lancashire after being dumped 100 miles away. He died three months later on June 21 2019 at the nearby Whiston Hospital's Burns Unit, with cops leading the investigation at the time describing the attack as 'one of the most horrific' they had ever dealt with. Yesterday police in the Dominican Republic revealed they had taken Wooden into custody after holding him on an international arrest warrant issued by Mexican authorities hunting him over the alleged kidnap of a minor. The 45-year-old had been at the centre of a lengthy international manhunt after disappearing with his Colombian-born daughter Khadija Alexandria Alvarez Bonilla, now four, when she was just seven months old. The youngster had last been seen near Guadalajara International Airport in Mexico on October 14 2021, prompting regional prosecutors to issue an appeal saying: 'We consider the girl's wellbeing is at risk' before Interpol got involved. Khadija's mum Carolina Alvarez has made a series of emotional appeals over the past few years for information about her daughter's whereabouts. The digital creator set up a Facebook page called 'Buscamos a Khadija' -'We're looking for Khadija' in English - where she described her ex as a 'violent person who has possibly committed crimes in other countries'. Wooden was arrested in the Dominican Republic capital Santo Domingo. Local authorities say a Mexican woman was also held in the operation and three children 'rescued' although they have not yet confirmed one of them was Khadija. The fugitive Brit is now expected to be extradited to Mexico to face trial. It was not immediately clear this morning if West Midlands Police have been officially informed about the arrest and whether they will try to have him extradited to the UK as well. Confirming Wooden's detention, the Dominican Republic's National Police force said: 'The National Police, through its INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) in Santo Domingo, in coordination with the Public Prosecutor's Office and with the support of international agencies, captured a British citizen in the National District who was wanted by the Mexican judicial authorities for the crime of child abduction. 'The joint operation, which also involved the Department of Investigation of Trafficking and Smuggling of Persons, the Department of Investigation of Crimes and Offences Against Property and the SWAT tactical unit, was carried out under search and arrest warrant No. 2025-AJ0047965, issued on 23 July 2025 by the Judicial Office of Permanent Services of the National District. 'The detainee is Kevin Leon Wooden and/or Shaban Kuka, 45, who used false Mexican identity documents under the name Miguel Antonio Torres Hernández. 'The arrest took place on Roberto Pastoriza Avenue, at the corner of Abraham Lincoln, in the National District. 'Wooden is wanted on an INTERPOL Red Notice for international search and arrest, accused of 'child abduction,' in addition to having a criminal record for various offences in his country of origin. 'During the raid, carried out at a house in the Bella Vista neighbourhood, three children were rescued, and 41-year-old Mexican citizen Viviana Villarreal Cambero was also arrested. 'Several pieces of evidence were seized at the scene, including cash and valuable items of clothing. 'The operation was coordinated by Magistrate Olga Dina Llaverias, head of the National Directorate for Children, Adolescents and Families (DINNAF), together with Attorney General Shirley Aurich and Prosecutor Jose Martínez, both attached to the aforementioned directorate.' Shortly after Mr Samel's death, lead investigator Detective Chief Inspector Anastasia Miller said as they appealed for information about Wooden and released an image of him: 'This was a shocking attack and certainly one of the most horrific in my professional experience. 'As we approach the anniversary of Mr Samel's kidnap, we have released an image of Kevin Wooden who we urgently want to speak to. We have reason to believe Wooden is currently out of the country and we are urgently appealing for anyone who has any information to contact us. 'Tomasz had been tortured and had received 75 per cent burns to his body. Despite being very ill he was able to knock on a door and seek help. 'We had spoken to Tomasz while he was in hospital but he was very unwell. We can't disclose what was said before he died. We've been working hard to understand exactly what happened on that day and why. 'We're keeping an open mind about the motive, and have been carrying out extensive enquiries since March. What we do know is that the van that used to abduct Tomasz had been at Hopwood Park Services in Bromsgrove earlier that day. 'CCTV shows the suspects buying a fluorescent tabard which we believe was then used to give the illusion that they were at his home on legitimate business. 'We believe the answer to this lies with the people in these images and I'd urge people to study these images very closely.' Crimestoppers launched a £10,000 appeal for information in 2020, with the charity's regional manager Gary Murray saying at the time: 'This is a shocking and horrendous crime and we are appealing to anybody with any information to speak to our charity 100% anonymously. 'What you know could make all of the difference to help get justice for Tomasz who suffered for months before eventually dying from his severe injuries.' West Midlands Police said in June 2022 a 44-year-old suspect had been arrested in Thessaloniki in Greece and would be liaising with Greek authorities and other agencies. Reports at the time said a number of people had been held as part of the investigation but no one had yet been charged.
