Three COVID-19 samples from Telangana sent for genome sequencing, all belong to LF.7.9 variant: INSACOG
Data from the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) reveals that Telangana has submitted three samples for sequencing. Kiran Madala, head of Anaesthesia at Gandhi Medical College, Secunderabad, and a COVID-19 researcher, confirmed that the samples were sent on May 5 and May 16, and all three were identified as the LF.7.9 variant.
The LF.7.9 variant has, so far, been detected only in India. Preliminary assessment suggests that it is a mild variant. However, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has not yet released specific information or a detailed classification about this variant.
Dr. Madala added that, as of June 3, a total of 118 samples had been sent for sequencing from across India. Among those, 58 belonged to the XFG variant, 34 to LF.7.9, 16 to XFJ and three to JN.1 while seven samples were attributed to other variants.
The move to initiate sequencing in Telangana follows directions from Health Minister C. Damodar Raja Narasimha, who asked officials to step up genomic surveillance in light of the national trend.
INSACOG data also shows that the NB.1.8.1 variant, currently surging in Singapore, has been detected in one case in Maharashtra, added Dr.Madala.

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha on Monday demanded that every citizen be granted a legal right to Annual Health Checkups, highlighting that the early diagnosis of diseases could save countless lives and ease the burden on India's healthcare system. During a Special Mention in the Upper House, Mr Chadha said, "Annual health checkups have become a luxury in our country - something only the affluent can afford. A mother who never knew she had cancer, a son who discovered his blood pressure only after a stroke, a sister whose vision loss revealed diabetes - these stories are far too common." Referring to the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic and several viral videos of young people suffering cardiac arrests on a daily basis, Mr Chadha said the time has come for structured, state-sponsored preventive healthcare becoming central to India's public health policy. Mr Chadha said that only 2 per cent of Indian women have undergone cancer screening, citing data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), terming it "deeply alarming." He urged the government to make affordable, accessible and routine health screenings a legal right for every citizen, with systems in place across urban and rural India. "In several countries, governments proactively conduct health checkups. They invite citizens to participate and ensure that illnesses are caught early," Mr Chadha said in Parliament. Speaking to NDTV after raising the issue in Parliament, Mr Chadha said, "This is standard practice in most developed countries, but sadly not in India. If the government allows this, I don't think it will be a huge financial burden." He added, "In fact, it will actually bring healthcare expenditure down in the long run. When illnesses are detected early, we avoid the need for prolonged and costly treatments in government hospitals." A study published in the Lancet journal found that around 55 per cent of heart attack deaths in India occur due to delays in seeking timely diagnosis. Mr Chadha concluded by saying, "Jaan hai, toh janch hai. But janch hogi, tabhi toh jaan bachegi (If there is life, then there is a diagnosis. But lives can only be saved if there is a diagnosis)."

Pawan Kalyan says he hasn't abandoned Hari Hara Veera Mallu: ‘Refrained from promoting films not out of arrogance, but…'
Although receiving the green signal from Pawan Kalyan to take on the lead role in Hari Hara Veera Mallu must have sent producer AM Rathnam to cloud nine, that moment was over five years ago. Since then, the highly ambitious project has faced several hurdles, including director Krish Jagarlamudi stepping away and multiple production halts, largely due to the Covid-19 pandemic and Pawan's political commitments. The delays were so extensive that the film's release was postponed three times just this year. Fortunately for the makers, Hari Hara Veera Mallu: Part 1 is finally gearing up to hit the screens on July 24. However, despite being a big-budget film, its promotional campaign has been notably dull, largely due to the complete absence of Pawan Kalyan, who serves as the Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. Now, just three days ahead of the film's global release, Pawan has finally made a public appearance at a promotional event, during which he addressed his earlier absence and clarified that it was not due to 'arrogance', contrary to popular speculation. Describing himself as a 'misunderstood star', Pawan Kalyan emphasised that he had not distanced himself from the project in any way. He said his presence now was intended to put an end to such rumours. 'If I have refrained from promoting my films all these years, it is not out of arrogance. I find it awkward to talk about the work that has gone into a film and market it. I have always believed that if a film is good, there is no need to promote it. And any promotion cannot help a bad film,' he said while addressing the media in Hyderabad on Monday. 'I have not been competitive in cinema. But it is cinema that gave me food, made me what I am. So I am here to state that I have not abandoned my film. Politically, I may have a recognisable name and a presence across the country. But when it comes to cinema, I know I don't rank as high as other heroes. That brings its own set of challenges. My films may not do the kind of business theirs do or bring in the same returns. My primary focus has always been politics. I never was competitive with films. My focus was always on social service. It is everyone's industry,' he added. Though Krish stepped back due to varied reasons, Rathnam and (his son) Jyothi Krishna, who took up the task of direction, were relentless and ensured that the film was completed,' he pointed out, adding that the high-action climax episode was shot over 57 days. 'Nidhhi Agerwal single-handedly carried the burden of promoting this film. I felt very embarrassed. Here was a young actress who should be prioritising her career. Instead, she was pushing the film forward on her own,' the actor observed. Shrimp farmers seek MSP for tiger prawns
The members of Combined Prakasam District Shrimp Farmers Welfare Association staged a peaceful protest demanding that the government announce minimum support price (MSP) for tiger prawns, at the Collector office in Ongole on Monday. E. Yashwanth Kumar, President of the Association, said, 'As the prices of tiger prawns have been declining in the recent times, the government should offer the MSP to protect the farmers. On the other hand, the cost of aqua chemicals had increased since Covid times and the government must bring it down.' The government has already announced to decrease the aqua feed rate at ₹9 per kg. This must be implemented from July 1, he said. The association members further demanded that the government offer power supply at ₹1.50 per unit to the ponds irrespective of their location in aqua zone or non-aqua zone. They also sought transformers to free power supply that had been extended till 2019.
