Russia's Rosatom to explore construction of high-capacity nuclear plant in Uzbekistan
Rosatom, which signed the agreement with the Uzbek government at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, already has plans to construct smaller nuclear units in Uzbekistan.
The Russian energy company was also tapped over the weekend by the government of Kazakhstan to lead a consortium to build the first nuclear power plant there.
There are currently no nuclear power plants in any of the five ex-Soviet Central Asian republics, although Uzbekistan and its neighbour Kazakhstan, both uranium producers, have long said their growing economies need them.
The Uzbekistan plant will employ two Russian-designed VVER-1000 reactors, with the possibility to scale up to four.
Last May, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev agreed on a deal for Rosatom to construct smaller-capacity plants with a capacity of 55 megawatts each in Uzbekistan.
On Friday, Rosatom head Alexei Likhachev said Rosatom was discussing building two low-power and two high-power nuclear units in Uzbekistan.
"The small modular nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan is the first export product of modern small power plants on the planet," Likhachev told reporters in St. Petersburg. He said the plants would help Uzbekistan respond to its growing electricity needs.
He also told journalists the firm had approved a preliminary roadmap with Kazakhstan for two units there using Russian-made VVER-1200 reactors.

Sempra, Japan's JERA enter into 20-year LNG supply deal
Sempra Infrastructure, a unit of U.S. energy company Sempra, said on Thursday it has entered into a 20-year deal to supply 1.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Japan's biggest power generator JERA. The LNG would be supplied from Sempra's Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 development project in Texas, it added. Sempra Infrastructure CEO Justin Bird said the company remains focused on advancing its Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 development project to a final investment decision. The project has received all its key permits and is expected to include two liquefaction trains capable of producing about 13 Mtpa of LNG, the companies said in a statement. The Port Arthur LNG Phase 1 project, which is currently under construction, is expected to achieve commercial operation in 2027 and 2028 for trains 1 and 2, respectively.

SK Innovation expects better Q3 refining margins; losses deepen in Q2
SEOUL :SK Innovation Co Ltd, owner of South Korea's top refiner SK Energy, said on Thursday it expected third-quarter refining margins to improve after losses grew in the second quarter. "Sales and operating profit fell compared to the previous quarter due to the difficult external environment such as global economic uncertainty, tariff impact, and falling oil prices," SK Innovation said. "Further improvements in refining margins are expected in the third quarter (and) easing tariff risks and increasing sales volumes in Europe in the battery business will positively affect earnings improvement," it added in a statement. The company posted an operating loss of 418 billion won ($301.20 million) for the period from April to June, compared with a loss of 45.8 billion won a year earlier. The results were worse than an average analyst forecast for a loss of 140 billion won compiled by LSEG SmartEstimate. Battery subsidiary SK On, which supplies automakers such as Hyundai Motor, Kia Corp, Ford Motor and Volkswagen, booked an operating loss of 66 billion won, improved from a year-earlier loss of 460 billion. SK On will issue new shares worth 2 trillion won ($1.44 billion) in a capital increase, the parent said on Wednesday, and merge with oil and lubricant-producing affiliate SK Enmove to improve the battery maker's financial position. With this move, the company said previous IPO plans for SK On had been cancelled. The United States struck a trade deal with South Korea on Wednesday including an auto tariff rate of 15 per cent, officials said. In an earnings call SK On said it would strive to mitigate risk as tariffs keep automakers' production and cost strategies in flux.
