Vaibhav Suryavanshi's Record Broken, Ayush Mhatre Enters U-19 History Books
The 18-year-old smashed 126 off 80 balls with 13 fours and 6 sixes, reaching his century in 64 balls and breaking Vaibhav's record with a six on the 68th delivery
India U-19 skipper Ayush Mhatre broke a world record in spectacular fashion during the second and final Test against England U-19 at Chelmsford, which ended in a draw. In a blazing second-innings knock, Ayush smashed a century at a strike rate of over 150, surpassing the previous record held by teammate Vaibhav Suryavanshi and setting a new global benchmark for the fastest-scoring hundred in youth Test cricket.
The 18-year-old amassed 126 runs in just 80 balls, including 13 fours and 6 sixes. He reached his century in 64 balls and broke Vaibhav's record with a six on the 68th ball. Interestingly, the bowler he faced was Alex Green, who had previously dismissed Vaibhav in both innings.
Ayush had already made a mark with his youth Test debut against Australia last year, scoring 104 runs off 62 balls in the second innings. Left-handed opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi had held the previous world record, having scored with a strike rate of 167.74, including 14 fours and 4 sixes. That record, for the highest individual score at a strike rate of 150 or more in an Under-19 Youth Test, now belongs to Ayush Mhatre.
In the match, England declared their innings at 324 runs, to which India responded with 279 runs, with notable performances from Vihan Malhotra (120) and Ayush (80). England then set a target of 355 runs in the second innings, and India managed 290 for 6 wickets on the final day, leading to a draw. Barring Ayush, no other batter made a significant contribution in the second innings. Notably, Vaibhav Suryavanshi was dismissed for a duck.
Ayush was the standout performer in this Test series, scoring 340 runs across 4 innings, which included 2 centuries and a half-century. Vihan Malhotra contributed significantly with 277 runs in the middle order. In the bowling department, Aditya Rawat and R Ambarish each took 6 wickets.
While Vaibhav Suryavanshi excelled in the ODI series, Ayush dominated the Test series. Despite the series ending in a draw, Ayush's record-breaking performance and consistent batting offer promising signs for the future of the Indian team.
