The 2019 champion's (-1) run of birdies comes to an end on 10 with a par, though he wasn't far off with his first putt. He's four under for this round. Elsewhere, the wonderfully named Maverick McNealy is three under thru 3 and four under for the week — he's top of the players currently out there, tied for 22nd.

How about this for Shane Lowry, who reaches the turn in 32. He finds the green with his second shot on the 9th, around 20 feet away, and it's yet another birdie. That's three in a row and he's on one under.
Right then, any early movers and shakers? Despite his illness, Shane Lowry has rediscovered some of that 2019-winning form to record his fourth birdie of the front nine. Phil Mickelson is two under for his round thru 10 while fellow Open winners Henrik Stenson, Jordan Spieth, and Franceso Molinari — who took the Claret Jug between 2016 and 2018 respectively — are all out on course. It's an unforgiving game, golf.
You only have to go back three years to find someone overturning a four-shot Open deficit in the final round (Rick Broadbent writes at Portrush). Cam Smith won that year after reining in Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland. He was actually six strokes better than McIlroy and ten better than Hovland. Scottie Scheffler is a different proposition, though.
He has had one bogey in his last 43 holes, has closed out his last nine 54-hole leads, has been showing exquisite distance control this week and his nearest challenger, Haotong Li, has just made an Open cut for the first time since 2018. 'Kind of like, play for second,' Li said of his plans. This is golf, though. If someone is four under thru six then it could at least get interesting. Smith, by the way, has missed the cut at all four majors in 2025.

The fact that Sergio Garcia is playing at this early hour already indicates that it's not been his tournament, and now he's just broken his driver in anger after hooking left on the 2nd tee. Because he broke the club on purpose, he now can't replace it this round.
It's very early doors on the final day at Portrush but that doesn't mean there aren't big names to watch out for — most pertinently the 2019 champion Shane Lowry, who has begun his round already. It's been a disappointing week, capped by a two-shot penalty on Friday for moving a ball with his practice swing. He has also struggled with illness, saying 'every bathroom I went in and tried to throw up, [but] I couldn't'.
'The annoying thing for me today is I didn't get to enjoy today as much as I would have liked,' Lowry added yesterday. 'Saturday at the Open in your home country, I should enjoy it a lot more than I did, just because of how I felt.'
He's one under thru 6 so far today and two over for the week.

J.P. Crawford walk-off homer lifts Mariners past the Rangers
August 2 - J.P Crawford hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Seattle Mariners rallied to defeat the visiting Texas Rangers 4-3 Friday night. Dominic Canzone drew a leadoff walk and Crawford lined a 2-0 fastball from Robert Garcia (1-6) over the right-field wall to give the Mariners the walk-off victory. Eduard Bazardo (5-0) pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the victory. The Mariners opened the scoring in the second inning. With one out, Eugenio Suarez reached on an infield chopper and Jorge Polanco lined a single to right, putting runners at the corners. A walk to Canzone loaded the bases before Rangers starter Jack Leiter fanned Crawford. Rookie Cole Young walked to bring home Suarez, but Leiter struck out Randy Arozarena to get out of the jam with no further damage. The Rangers did all their damage against Mariners starter Logan Gilbert in the top of the third. Joc Pederson, who entered the game 0 for 24 against the Mariners this season, led off and was grazed on the hand by a pitch. Former Mariner Rowdy Tellez grounded a double down the first-base line, with Pederson scoring from first when Canzone bobbled the ball in right field. Tellez took third on Jonah Heim's groundout and scored on Josh Smith's grounder into left field. With two outs, Marcus Semien doubled into the left-center gap to make it 3-1. Bednarek, Jefferson-Wooden win 100 titles at US Championships
Aug 2 (Reuters) - Kenny Bednarek stormed to the men's 100 metres title at the USA Track and Field Championships on Friday in a personal best time of 9.79, while Melissa Jefferson-Wooden clocked the joint fifth-fastest time in history to take the women's crown. Paris Olympics 200 silver medallist Bednarek edged out Courtney Lindsey (9.82) and T'Mars McCallum (9.83) in Eugene, Oregon, with all three set to join defending champion Noah Lyles at the world championships in Tokyo in September. Lyles had pulled out of the semis to focus on the 200. "I would say it's about damn time," Bednarek said. "I've been second for a very long time. I always knew that I had the ability to win it but I just had to believe in myself. And this year I really started living up to my expectations." Jefferson-Wooden clocked 10.65 in the women's 100, with Kayla White (10.84) and Aleia Hobbs (10.92) rounding out the top three. "I've been dreaming of days like this," Jefferson-Wooden said. "And it's finally starting to come true. "Right now, the sky's the limit. We're just going to keep working towards bigger and better things. Jefferson-Wooden said she had grown so much since winning her first national title in 2022. "I've learned a lot. I've made changes. I made sacrifices," the 24-year-old said. "Being the U.S. champion today, even though I still hold 2022 really near and dear to my heart, being in this moment right now just makes me happy. I didn't lose sight of what I always wanted to become. "I want to be the greatest to ever do it." Reigning world champion Sha'Carri Richardson withdrew from the semi-finals. Reports on Friday said she had been arrested for domestic violence at a Seattle airport four days before the start of the championships.
