Water pumped from Bayesian superyacht as it is seen for first time since sinking

Independent21-06-2025
The superyacht Bayesian, owned by Mike Lynch, has been seen upright off the coast of Sicily for the first time since it tragically sank last month, resulting in seven deaths.
The 56-metre vessel was spotted near Porticello, held by a powerful sea crane, as salvage workers continued to pump Water from it in preparation for full recovery.
The sinking on August 19 claimed the lives of Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah, Jonathan and Judy Bloomer, US lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo, and chef Recaldo Thomas.
Investigators from the UK and Italy are raising the vessel to fully understand the incident, with an interim report indicating it was knocked over by "extreme wind" due to an unknown vulnerability.
The yacht is expected to be brought to Termini Imerese for further investigation, following earlier delays in salvage efforts due to a diver's death in May.

Skirting the issue: Designer dress goes missing from Bezos-Sánchez wedding

Lauren Sánchez packed 27 designer dresses for her wedding to the billionaire Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos, in Venice last week, but left with only 26 after one went missing. The couple, who are now honeymooning in Taormina, Sicily, were wed during a star-studded three-day celebration in the lagoon city. They left Venice on Sunday, but mystery over the missing dress has generated chatter in Venice, with Corriere della Sera claiming that it was stolen, possibly by someone who evaded security and gatecrashed a party on the tiny island of San Giorgio, where the couple exchanged rings, on Friday. The newspaper said the number of gatecrashers to the event was such that officers from the local unit of Italy's anti-terrorism squad, Digos, were called to the island. The newspaper also alleged a vintage Dolce & Gabbana-designed dress, either worn by the bride or wedding guest Ivanka Trump, was torn and caught fire during another party. Sources familiar with the situation confirmed that a dress had gone missing but denied it was stolen. It is unclear where the dress disappeared and when. The couple lodged at the seven-star Aman hotel, where the bride's wedding outfits were reportedly kept under close watch. The sources stressed that no legal complaint about the missing dress had been made to police, with the expectation being that the garment would eventually 'turn up'. They also denied the report that a dress caught fire and that the celebrations had been infiltrated by gatecrashers. The nuptials, which are said to have cost between €40m and €48m (£34m-£41m), reportedly included everything from pyjama and foam parties to elegant dinners and a Great Gatsby-themed event. But on almost every canal, alleyway and square, there were protests against the wedding, with anti-Bezos campaigners arguing that the celebrations risked turning Venice into a playground for the rich, bringing nothing but strife for ordinary residents. The location of the main reception party on Saturday had to be changed at the last-minute because of threats by protesters to fill the canals with inflatable crocodiles in order to prevent the 200 or so wedding guests, who included Whoopi Goldberg, Orlando Bloom and Kim Kardashian, from arriving. The guests arrived in Venice on super-yachts and more than 90 private jets. As Friday night's party got into full swing, a green laser was used to spell out the slogan 'No Kings, No Bezos' on the bell tower in St Mark's Square. Another stunt involved activists floating a lifesize mannequin of Bezos along the Grand Canal, clinging to an Amazon box while holding fake dollars. The Venice mayor, Luigi Brugnaro, dismissed the protesters as 'shameful' and said the Bezos-Sánchez union would fill Venetian coffers. The couple have now moved on to Taormina. They reportedly arrived in Sicily on Bezos's super-yacht before being transported by helicopter to the hilltop town on the island's east coast, where they are staying in San Domenico Palace, the hotel made famous by the US TV show, The White Lotus. For now, there have been no reports of protests or items of clothing gone astray on the southern Italian island. Instead, some political leaders have embraced the couple. 'Jeff and Lauren, we welcome you with open arms,' said Matteo Francilia, mayor of Furci Siculo, a small town near Messina. 'Leave behind the beautiful lagoon with its absurd complaints! Here in Furci Siculo you'll find sun, sea and genuine people, who would welcome you with open arms.' It's not the first time Bezos's 127-metre super-yacht has sailed to Sicily. Last summer, the vessel toured the coastline near Taormina, and the Aeolian islands.

Socialite who ran over and killed Moroccan mugger who stole her bag is charged with murder and faces life behind bars

A socialite who repeatedly ran over a mugger with her SUV after he snatched her bag is to face trial for his murder. Italian businesswoman Cinzia Dal Pino, 65, was caught on street CCTV ramming the thief with her white Mercedes GLE in Viareggio, Tuscany, in September last year. Horrifying CCTV footage showed Dal Pino swerve off the road in her £80,000 car to plough into 52-year-old thief Nourdine Mezgoui. As he falls to the ground, Dal Pino reverses and then drives forward, crushing him under the front wheels of her two-and-a-half-tonne motor. But as Moroccan national Mezgoui writhes in agony, Dal Pino reverses and runs over him twice more until he stops moving. Then she hops out of the SUV limo in her stiletto heels before she takes back her bag, gets back in the car and drives off. Mezgoui was later declared dead at the scene after passersby called paramedics. Now, officials at the Court of Assizes in Lucca have set Dal Pino's trial opening date on a charge of aggravated voluntary homicide for 24th September. Pino told police earlier that Mezgoui had mugged her as she came out of a restaurant after a dinner date. Her lawyer Enrico Marzaduri said: 'She didn't want to kill, but to stop the man and get her bag back. 'Inside it were her documents and house keys, and she was fearful he would have committed other crimes.' But despite this fear, rather than calling police or paramedics Dal Pino calmly returned to the restaurant where she had been dining with friends before the attack to bring back an umbrella she had borrowed, local media reported. Dal Pino admitted to police she had chased after him and had only wanted to get her bag back. She told police: 'He had threatened to kill me with a knife. I was scared. I didn't mean to kill him I just wanted my belongings back. 'There were important documents in my bag and I couldn't call the police because my phone was in there.' Officers later revealed no knife had been found on Mezgoui and Dal Pino was initially held in jail on suspicion of manslaughter before being freed under house arrest. Her lawyer Enrico Marzaduri dismissed the video and said last year: 'I understand from the autopsy that it was certainly the initial impact that proved fatal and there are no tyre marks on the body. 'She just wanted to stop him and was aiming for his legs. She is suffering for what she did and is feeling remorse for what happened.' Dal Pino, a well known socialite in the Italian coastal city, was identified through her SUV's number plate and arrested by police just hours after the incident. The high-flying socialite, who has been under house arrest for the past 10 months, is also accused of cruelty, deceitful methods and killing her victim while he was unable to defend himself. Marzaduri's motion to downgrade the charge to self-defence or manslaughter was rejected by the court. Dal Pino faces life behind bars if convicted. Police had been monitoring Mezgoui in the lead up to his death and had wanted to repatriate him, but authorities had not responded to their requests, meaning he had remained at large in Viareggio. Mezgoui's family in Morocco spokenof their horror following the incident, saying that justice must be served and slamming Italian authorities for placing Dal Pino under house arrest rather than in jail. 'Not even an animal is killed in this way,' his sisters told Moroccan channel Chouf TV, adding: 'We ask for justice for our brother, Cinzia Dal Pino must remain in prison.' Mezgoui's family said of the 52-year-old, who had lived in Italy for 24 years: 'He was a good man and we want justice. Everyone who knows him will tell you that. She ran over him four times and then just calmly drove off when he was dying and didn't even ask for help.' Local archbishop monsignor Paolo Giulietti said just after the mugger's death: 'Other than self-defence, the video shows astonishing behaviour. 'How do you drive your car over a person's body several times? How could we think that a quiet and esteemed lady, a capable entrepreneur, could carry out such an action? 'Evil wins when it makes us evil: those who rejoice because this episode would be an episode of self-defence demonstrate how evil wins. 'I say, let's not rejoice, this is not self-defence, and it is not justice. Nothing, absolutely nothing can justify murder. 'Not just because we live in a state of law. But because every person, in every situation they find themselves in, has the right to live.' Italy's deputy prime minister Matteo Salvini took a different view and wrote on Facebook: 'This drama is the consequence of a crime. If the man who lost his life hadn't been a delinquent this wouldn't have happened.'

Skunk Anansie's Skin reveals man pretending to be room service attempted to 'mug her' in hotel as she details terrifying ordeal

Skunk Anansie's Skin has revealed a man posing to be room service attempted to 'mug her' during her stay at a Pullman hotel, as she detailed the terrifying ordeal in an Instagram video on Wednesday. The British singer, 57, received a knock on her hotel door at 6am from an unidentified male earlier this week - after an 18-hour tour bus journey - claiming to be room service. Skin, who is currently touring with her band around Europe, insisted the man was attempting to mug her. While it is currently unknown what Pullman hotel Skin was staying in at the time, Skunk Anansie were in Germany over the weekend on tour. They head to Italy for another show on July 5. She said: 'Somebody tried to mug me in my room. They woke me up at 6am after an 18 hour tour bus journey. I was tired and they said it was room service. 'The Brixton thing in me said "Ding ding." There were no tray and I thought something was wrong. I cussed the guy and he said he would come back. The shaken star shared her fury while explaining the frightening situation and insisted the hotel should have 'done better', before sharing an update and response from the hotel 'It was just about 6am. They found the guy from my description. I did a Karen and said "I want to speak to the manager." The hotel said they had to let him go as our stories did not match up. 'They said he was looking for his girlfriend but it was dodgy. In the end the manager tells me there is no case. You know sometimes in your life when you have steam blowing. I had to take myself away from this man and the situation. 'We made the hotel look at the cameras to get a picture of this man. He was leaning up against my door. He could have pushed the door in with a knife or he could have had Chloroform. 'Who knows what would have happened. But I am a fighter and that is going to get me in trouble. 'Now I will have to get one of those little lock things to put in the door. If you are in a band you will need to get one. It can happen to you. 'I would say "Pullman Hotels, do better. Have security. Dont wait for something awful to happen. Put better security and cameras into your hotels and key cards so you can use the lift. 'I am still vexed even telling the story. Never open your door at weird times useless you know who is there.' The shaken star shared her fury while explaining the frightening situation and insisted the hotel should have 'done better', before sharing an update and response from the hotel. In the caption she wrote: 'Update: So we have heard back from the hotel, they are reviewing their security systems and will be adding extra security including lift card entry systems when they do their renovations. 'That's very good news. I'm not trying to get anyone fired, my life mantra is that prevention is better than a cure. Hotels can do a lot to make their clients safe. 'The reaction should not be to automatically pit my word against someone clearly being dodgy because you didn't catch him camera doing it. 'But thanks to @pullmanhotels for listening and doing something about it, that is much appreciated.' MailOnline has contacted Skin and Pullman Hotels for comment. Skunk Anansie is made up of Skin, Cass, Ace, and Mark Richardson.
