Sugar Island surprises O'Brien in winning Curragh start
O'Brien said: 'She was really just ready to start off. Ryan said she was green but still won nicely and he liked her.
'She'd have no problem going into a Group race over a mile and you'd like to give her another run before then.
'I thought she'd be still a maiden after this and then we could run her in another maiden. Sometimes it's easier on them when they can have two runs in maidens.
'She'll stay a mile and a quarter next year.'
O'Brien and Moore added to their tally with Light As Air in the Hong Kong Thoroughbred Breeders Alliance Irish EBF Maiden, the 1-2 favourite having last been seen finishing well down the field in the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot.
O'Brien said: 'We thought he was a well-handicapped horse. He was unlucky at Leopardstown and was also placed at Navan, but was a bit disappointing at Ascot last time.
'Today we thought he'd win easier than that, but we think there is more to come with him. Ryan gave him a good ride.
'We might give him a little more time now. He'd a tough race there and Ryan said the second horse kept coming with him all the way, but he didn't lie down.
'He stays well and looks like he could get further.'

Ascot: King George, Saturday, July 26 – runner guide and tips
Race: King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes When: 4.10pm, Saturday, July 26 Where: Ascot Watch: ITV1 & Sky Sports Racing Class: Group 1 Trip: 1m 4f Horse age: 3yo+ Total prize money: £1.5million If you already have a Betfred account and are looking for a new bookmaker to use for this week's racing, check out more free bets from the best betting sites, reviewed by our experts Ron Wood's Eclipse verdict CALANDAGAN is an off-the-pace runner who can be a bit tricky, but he gained an overdue first Group 1 success in France on his latest start and he should reverse June's Coronation Cup form with Jan Brueghel. The form danger is Kalpana, but she might not appreciate the drying ground. Check out the Betfred promo code July 2025 Eclipse – Guide to runners and odds 1. Calandagan (4) – 7/4 with Betfred Trainer: Francis Henri Graffard; Jockey: Mickael Barzalona: Group 2 winner over course and distance at Royal Ascot last year. Denied by a cannily ridden Jan Brueghel in the Coronation Cup at Epsom in June, but shaped like the best horse in that race. He's not completely straightforward, but readily won a Group 1 race in France last time out and has strong claims again now. Stable won this last year. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 2. Jan Brueghel (2) – 7/4 with Betfred Trainer: Aidan O'Brien; Jockey: Ryan Moore: Last year's St Leger winner. Had a better position than Calandagan and the ground was on the slow side when defeating the French horse in this season's Coronation Cup at Epsom. Probably won't be quick enough now, on faster going, even with the addition of cheekpieces. ⭐⭐⭐ 3. Kalpana (5) – 9/2 with Betfred Trainer: Andrew Balding; Jockey: Oisin Murphy: Group 1 winner against her own sex here last October, but beaten on both starts this term and the ground may be quicker than she wants. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4. Rebel's Romance (1) – 9/2 with Betfred Trainer: Charlie Appleby; Jockey: William Buick: Terrific old horse, a seven-time winner at the top level. Didn't have the race unfold to suit when third in this last year and most recently won the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes over course and distance at Royal Ascot, but doesn't look up to this now. ⭐⭐⭐ 5. Continuous (3) – 100/1 with Betfred Trainer: Aidan O'Brien; Jockey: Wayne Lordan: Won the 2023 St Leger, but tends to be used as a pacemaker these days and he'll just be setting this up for others. ⭐ Odds courtesy of Betfred and correct at time of writing. Smart targets in the pipeline for Wemightakedlongway
The daughter of Australia was fourth to Minnie Hauk in the Epsom equivalent in June before not being disgraced when dropping back to 10 furlongs and filling the same spot in the Curragh's Pretty Polly Stakes next time. She justified her position as chief market danger to Minnie Hauk when closing the gap on the dual Classic winner in her second taste of Classic action and after her brave performance in defeat, Wemightakedlongway's trainer is now lining up some exciting options for later in the season. 'I was very proud of her run and there is no shame getting beat a length by Minnie Hauk,' said O'Brien. 'We can look at some nice fillies races with her in the autumn now and there's a good chance she might turn up in something like the Prix Vermeille or Prix de l'Opera.' O'Brien may have had to settle for second with Wemightakedlongway, but was thrilled to see Al Riffa – who is now somewhat a stable stalwart – excel in his first try at a mile and six. A dual Group One winner, he built on his fine Royal Ascot second to Rebel's Romance to romp to an impressive five-length success in the Curragh Cup and the Owning Hill handler has earmarked the Comer Group International Irish St. Leger over the same track and trip as the perfect spot to seek further top honours. 'He's a great horse who put up a real good showing in the Curragh Cup over a new distance for him,' added O'Brien. 'He seemed to cope with the trip well and the Irish St Leger is an obvious target for him now, but we have the option of popping back to Germany or something between now and then, so we'll see how he pulls up and make a plan from there. 'He was second in the Eclipse last year and has a high level of form at a mile and a half and now he can go a mile and six as well it just opens up more options. Really, trying to win another Group One and earn some good prize-money will be our objective before the end of the year.'

Ryan Reynolds smashes Wrexham transfer record as Premier League star suddenly agrees terms
Wrexham are set to break their transfer record with a new signing as part of a £10m summer spree backed by their Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney Wrexham look set to smash their transfer record to sign Nottingham Forest star Lewis O'Brien. The Red Dragons were originally reported to have agreed a £5million deal for the midfielder earlier this month. Talks between the newly promoted Championship side and the 26-year-old hit a stumbling block, though, as they struggled to agree personal terms. However, the move is now understood to be close to completion after significant progress was made on Wednesday. O'Brien impressed on loan in the second tier with Swansea City during the latter half of last season after previously spending time with LAFC in the MLS. The Swans were among a number of Championship outfits hoping to secure his services on a permanent basis. But the BBC reports that their North Wales rivals appear to have beaten them to the punch. While it's been claimed in some quarters that Wrexham have reduced their initial bid in order to offer a stronger financial package to O'Brien, the fee is still expected to surpass the club's current record of £2.16m. The sum was paid to sign New Zealand international Liberato Cacace from Empoli last week and could potentially rise to as much as £4m with add-ons. O'Brien joined Forest from Huddersfield Town in 2022 but has made only 17 appearances since arriving at the City Ground. If he completes his move to Wrexham, he will become manager Phil Parkinson 's sixth summer recruit since securing promotion from League One in April. The club's Hollywood co-owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have sanctioned significant spending, with striker Ryan Hardie being the first to join from Plymouth for a reported amount of around £700,000. That was followed by Leicester goalkeeper Danny Ward on a free transfer and Cacace. Bolton captain George Thomason was then brought in for £1.2m on Monday, with ex-Sheffield Wednesday forward Josh Windass becoming Wrexham's most recent addition on Wednesday. No fee was paid after Windass left the Owls by mutual agreement following an issue with late wage payments. The signing of O'Brien could take Wrexham's total outlay in the current window close to the £10m mark as they look to assemble a squad capable of competing in the Championship. Sheffield United striker Kieffer Moore is also said to be on their radar to bolster their options up front. Parkinson has freed up space in his squad by allowing three players to leave the Racecourse Ground. Wrexham talisman Paul Mullin joined Wigan Athletic on loan in a surprise move after being frozen out by the manager during the second half of last season. Defender Will Boyle made a permanent switch to Shrewsbury Town, with wing-back Luke Bolton going to Mansfield Town. Steven Fletcher, Mark Howard, Josh Adam, Jordan Davies, Harry Dean, Brad Foster and Liam Hall were also released at the end of last season, while striker Sam Dalby rejected a new deal in favour of joining Bolton. Wrexham are due to start their first campaign in the second tier in 43 years away to Southampton on Saturday, August 9.
