Domestic helper jailed for abusing Singapore employer's one-year-old son more than 20 times

The Star2 days ago
SINGAPORE: A domestic helper was sentenced to two years and six months' jail on Wednesday (July 30) for repeatedly abusing her employer's one-year-old son by hitting his head, slapping his face, pulling his hair and pinching his ear.
Nucom Loreta Talbo, 30, who has children of her own, told investigators that she had hit the victim because his crying disrupted her sleep and she felt frustrated.
On July 16, the Filipina pleaded guilty to one count of ill-treating the child. She had abused him on more than 20 occasions between March and July 2024.
In earlier proceedings, the court heard that Talbo was a seasoned domestic helper who had been working in Singapore for the past five years.
She had worked at the victim's household for 11 months since September 2023, and shared a room with the victim.
On Dec 27, 2023, an infant care teacher found injuries on the child's body.
When confronted, Talbo denied causing the injuries, and court documents did not state if she had caused them.
Her acts of abuse came to light on July 23, 2024, when the boy's parents heard him crying.
The couple checked footage from a CCTV camera installed in the room and saw her ill-treating their child. A further review of earlier footage revealed additional incriminating acts.
Among her many acts of abuse, Talbo used her fist to hit the child's head and slapped his face. She also pulled his hair and pinched his ear.
On July 16, Deputy Public Prosecutor Heershan Kaur said the victim's parents confronted Talbo after watching the clips.
She denied hitting the victim despite being shown the footage.
The police were alerted before she was removed from the household, and she stayed in a temporary shelter pending investigations.
The child's father later reviewed the other recordings that showed Talbo ill-treating the victim between March and July 2024. He shared the footage with the authorities.
But as the device was faulty, he could not confirm if any abuse occurred between September 2023 and March 2024. - The Straits Times/ANN

Singapore repairman on trial for rape claims accuser came on to him, compares act to sex with wife

SINGAPORE, Aug 1 — A 49-year-old man on trial here for raping a woman after she hired him to fix her lights claimed in court that they instead had consensual sex initiated by her. Taking the stand on July 31, Koh Lee Hwa told the court she had pulled his arm, which led to their sexual encounter, The Straits Times reported. Koh denied raping the woman and said the act lasted slightly over 10 minutes, which he compared to the 'standard' time he has sex with his wife. He questioned how a rape could happen so quickly, making the remark through a Mandarin interpreter. Prosecutors called Koh's account 'unbelievable' and argued that the woman had shown no indication she wanted intimacy. Koh, a Singapore permanent resident, faces four charges including rape, sexual assault by penetration, and two counts of outrage of modesty, allegedly committed between 11.40am and 12.40pm on 23 August 2021. The woman, who previously hired Koh for renovation work and later for electrical repairs, had testified earlier in private. On the day of the incident, she allegedly pushed Koh away after he hugged her in the living room and texted two friends about it before he attacked her again near the master bedroom toilet and raped her despite her resistance. Koh denied hugging her earlier and claimed she was the one who pulled him towards her, saying they began kissing before 'things happened very quickly' and they landed on the bed. The trial ended with Koh's testimony, and both prosecution and defence have been given four weeks to file written submissions, followed by one week for replies.

Man charged with having 320 vape pods and over 70 vapes meant for sale in car at Singapore's Bugis mall

SINGAPORE: A man was hauled to court after he was caught with 320 e-vaporiser pods and more than 70 e-vaporisers in a car at a Bugis shopping mall. Most of the vapes and their related components were meant for sale, according to details revealed in court documents. On Wednesday (July 30), Byron Chua Longming, 36, was handed five charges under the Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) Act. The Singaporean was purportedly found with the illicit products in a car on Aug 6, 2024, at about 12.30pm at Bugis Plus. Charge sheets did not state if it was his vehicle. Of the products, 72 vapes and 320 pods were allegedly for the purposes of sale, while one other vape found in his possession was not meant for sale. At about 4.40pm the same day, Chua was found to have more vapes and related components at an HDB flat at Block 217 Tampines Street 23. He allegedly had 30 pods for the purposes of sale, and two vapes which were not meant to be sold. A Health Sciences Authority (HSA) prosecutor said on July 30 that the prosecution would be handing Chua one more charge at his next court mention on Aug 21. If convicted of possessing vapes and their related components for sale, Chua could be fined up to S$10,000 and jailed for up to six months for each charge. Having such products, even if they are not meant to be sold, carries a maximum fine of $2,000 per charge. HSA seized $41 million worth of vapes from January 2024 to March 2025 – nearly fivefold the reported value of vapes seized from 2019 to end-2023, according to numbers compiled by The Straits Times. The Ministry of Health and Ministry of Home Affairs said in a joint statement on July 12 that they are looking at enhancing laws around vaping. The authorities said enforcement agencies will be taking stern action against those who import, sell, distribute, possess, use or purchase e-vaporisers. Since July 21, HSA has extended the operating hours for its Tobacco Regulation Branch hotline on 6684-2036 or 6684-2037 to report vaping-related offences. The hotline operates from 9am to 9pm daily, including on public holidays. HSA has also launched a new online portal to report vaping-related offences at If you have a story to share about vapes, e-mail us at stnewsdesk@ - The Straits Times/ANN
