
Sindh offers 30,000 digital skills scholarships in partnership with Google
The Sindh government has launched a major initiative in collaboration with Google and Tech Valley Pakistan to provide over 30,000 scholarships for digital skills training to students at public sector universities across the province.
Announced at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah at CM House, the programme will offer Google Career Certificates in high-demand fields including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cybersecurity, Digital Marketing, IT Automation, and Project Management.
"This partnership is a testament to our vision of transforming Sindh into a hub of innovation and skill development," Shah stated, noting that the programme will also promote gender inclusivity by ensuring at least 30% female participation.
The certificates, developed by Google experts, allow students to complete flexible online courses in as little as three to six months—no degree required. Graduates from previous cohorts have already secured jobs in leading firms, with salaries reportedly reaching up to Rs 1.6 million per month.
One such success story is Leena Kumari, a student from the University of Sindh, Jamshoro, who completed the Google AI Essentials course and secured a placement at Evolution. Her story was even featured by Google.
The programme will expand across 30 public universities and include new specialisations like Prompting Essentials and Agile Essentials. It also complements the ongoing Soft Skills & Career Kamyabi Sindh Programme, which provides training in CV writing, interview skills, and communication.

Digital transactions to ensure transparent economy: PM
Listen to article Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday stressed implementing the digital transaction system across the country, saying it was vital to bring transparency to the economy. He was chairing a weekly meeting on cashless and digital economy at the Prime Minister's House. On the occasion, the prime minister emphasized the need to facilitate payments between citizens and businesses and to raise awareness about the use of digital systems. He instructed the committees formed for the cashless economy to work closely with all stakeholders to present doable recommendations. During the meeting, the prime minister was briefed that following the previous meeting, the Digital Payments Innovation and Adoption Committee, the Digital Public Infrastructure Committee, and the Government Payments Committee had been established. A detailed briefing was given in the meeting with respect to the committee's proposals and strategies regarding the digitization of the economy. It was informed that the State Bank of Pakistan was developing a strategy to simplify and ease digital payment methods for merchants. A simplified package will be introduced to encourage and include small businesses in digital payments. The target is to increase the number of mobile app users for digital payments from 95 million to 120 million, and the number of merchants using QR codes will be increased from 0.9 million to 2 million. The total volume of digital payments is aimed to increase from Rs 7.5 billion to Rs 12 billion. The prime minister directed that all these targets should be doubled. The meeting was further informed that the "Digital National Pakistan" project for the digital economy had been initiated. The Islamabad City mobile application has so far recorded 1.3 million downloads, offering 15 services. Through the Islamabad City App, Rs 15.5 billion has been collected under ICT Excise and Taxation, the meeting was informed. Work is progressing rapidly on the completion of the Digital Pakistan ID project, while E-stamping facilities will also be launched in Islamabad soon. The meeting was further informed that efforts were underway to provide Wi-Fi internet services across Islamabad, particularly in hospitals, educational institutions, government offices, parks, and metro bus lines. The prime minister instructed that all these facilities should also be introduced in all federal areas, Azad Jammu & Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. The meeting was attended by Minister for Information Technology and Telecom Shaza Fatima, Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik, Prime Minister's Advisor Dr. Tauqir Shah, Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani, and other senior government officials. Polio case Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, stressing accelerated efforts to eradicate polio from the country, on Thursday expressed the resolve that despite all challenges and difficulties, the government, with the support of international, provincial, and local teams, will soon achieve the goal of a polio-free Pakistan. "We are committed to protect every child in Pakistan from this crippling disease and achieve a polio-free Pakistan," the prime minister said while chairing a meeting of the Anti-Polio Task Force here. He stressed the need for full dedication and seriousness to ensure that every child across the country receives multiple doses of the polio vaccine and remains protected. The prime minister acknowledged significant progress in the fight against polio due to the dedication of frontline workers, the commitment of the government of Pakistan, and support from the partners. He praised the efforts and cooperation of provincial governments, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu & Kashmir, and law enforcement agencies in the anti-polio campaign. "The safety of polio workers is our top priority," he said adding that all stakeholders, including provincial governments, must unite and intensify their efforts to eradicate polio. The prime minister expressed gratitude to all partners supporting the government in its polio eradication efforts. He extended special thanks to Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, for his comprehensive support of Pakistan's polio eradication efforts. The prime minister also appreciated the vital and commendable role of the Gates Foundation and all partners in the anti-polio campaign in Pakistan. During the briefing, it was informed in the meeting that specific polio campaigns were being designed for each district in Southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, based on the unique challenges faced in each area, to ensure complete eradication of the polio virus. The anti-polio campaign in Pakistan is not only targeting polio cases among children but also working to eliminate the virus's environmental presence. The meeting was attended by the chair of the Anti-Polio Oversight Board, Dr. Christopher Elias, who is also the President of the Global Development Program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In an era where optimism often flickers under the weight of uncertainty, Pakistan seems to have finally turned the dial in its favour. The country's new economic momentum structured around reform-driven governance, investor-centric policy frameworks, and an assertive geopolitical posture is beginning to spark a rare confluence of confidence and credibility. At the heart of this strategic recalibration lies the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), a state-level institutional mechanism that is now proving to be far more than a bureaucratic symbol. The government's ambition to attract US$ 5 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) is not just rhetorical it is now backed by tangible indicators, from soaring remittances and bullish capital markets to an unprecedented Rs 4.2 trillion development outlay for FY2025–26. Unlike previous economic plans that often stumbled at the altar of execution, this one appears both technically sound and politically backed, signalling a determined move from stagnation to structured growth. The post-budget environment in Pakistan tells a compelling story of market revival and strategic foresight. The KSE-100 index, long seen as a bellwether of investor sentiment, soared past the 125,000 mark a record high that is not merely symbolic but reflects deep-rooted optimism in the financial ecosystem. It is no coincidence that this surge was led by foreign investors, underlining Pakistan's emerging credibility in global markets. The budget has been well received across sectors, with economists and market strategists identifying key policy anchors that aim to shift the economy from short-term consumption patterns to sustainable, production-led growth. The IMF's endorsement of recent reforms further consolidates Pakistan's reformist narrative, while the active dismantling of red tape through SIFC's oversight is removing historical bottlenecks that once stifled both local and foreign investment. In this new configuration, SIFC has become the cornerstone of investment confidence not only fast-tracking approvals but also improving inter-agency coordination, a chronic structural weakness in the past. This forward-looking investment strategy is not confined to rhetoric or theoretical frameworks. It is underwritten by the Rs 4.2 trillion development envelope, of which Rs 1.4 trillion is allocated to the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP), while Rs 2.8 trillion will be channelled through non-PSDP instruments like public-private partnerships and foreign-funded initiatives. Balochistan, often pushed to the economic periphery despite its geostrategic significance, is now taking centre stage in this paradigm. Federal Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal's assertion that 'no region will be left behind' is not just political grandstanding but is backed by project-specific commitments in water management, solarisation of remote districts, higher education, and accelerated execution of the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) in Gwadar and Makran. This includes the creation of a new Climate Change Fund by the provincial government a significant move that aligns regional sustainability priorities with the federal development matrix. For the first time in decades, Balochistan is no longer merely a line item but a strategic axis in the national development strategy. The broader narrative is equally encouraging. Pakistan's manufacturing base once a victim of policy inertia and energy shortfalls is being recalibrated to support export-led growth, with the textile, food processing, and IT sectors receiving focused policy attention. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb's unveiling of a Rs 50 billion Industrial Revival Fund is a clear message that the government intends to walk the talk. Special tax incentives, capital repatriation ease, and a renewed focus on digital exports are now forming the architecture of a 21st-century industrial strategy. With IT exports projected to cross $3 billion this fiscal year, there is a credible roadmap in place. More importantly, these initiatives are being undertaken with a view to restructuring Pakistan's growth model from a reliance on consumption and external debt to value-added exports and foreign investment inflows. Analysts at Moody's, Fitch, and JP Morgan forecast a 30–40 percent increase in FDI over the next year a projection contingent, of course, on continued fiscal discipline and uninterrupted policy continuity, both of which now seem more plausible given the institutional backing of the current economic plan. While challenges such as inflationary pressures, external debt servicing, and uneven revenue generation persist, they are no longer defining the economic conversation. Instead, the narrative has decisively shifted towards opportunity, structure, and long-term resilience. Pakistan appears to be in the early stages of what could be described as a strategic economic reset transitioning from a reactive, stabilisation-focused approach to one that is proactive, structured, and regional in outlook. The recent promotion of Chief of Army Staff Syed Asim Munir co-chair of the SIFC to Field Marshal adds another layer of strategic continuity to the reform process. With military stability, political alignment, and institutional reforms now moving in tandem, Pakistan's path forward looks less precarious and more purpose-driven. The historic capital market rally, coupled with visible improvements in fiscal planning and provincial integration, suggests that Pakistan is not just scripting a new chapter it is attempting to rewrite the entire playbook of its economic future. Wafi Energy Pakistan Limited (formerly Shell Pakistan Limited) has released its first annual report under new ownership, marking a transition point for the company following its acquisition by Abu Dhabi-based Wafi Energy Holding Limited. The transaction, completed in October 2024, involved the purchase of a 77.42 percent stake from Shell Petroleum Company, followed by an additional 10.36 percent acquired from public shareholders, bringing Wafi's total holding to 87.78 percent. Despite the change in ownership and rebranding, Wafi Energy Pakistan continues to operate under the Shell name through an exclusive licensing arrangement for fuels and lubricants. The company's retail and lubricant operations remain largely unchanged in branding, while management has emphasized continuity in operations. The report highlights efforts to balance the legacy of the Shell brand with a shift toward regional ownership. While rebranding transitions of this nature often involve operational or reputational challenges, Wafi has so far focused on stabilizing its presence and setting the groundwork for localized growth, investment, and expansion in Pakistan's downstream energy sector. Financial Recovery and Performance Wafi Energy Pakistan's financial results for 2024 indicate a relatively stable transition under new ownership, with the company reporting revenues of Rs 427.9 billion and a profit after tax of Rs 3.3 billion. The company also reported growth in its convenience retail segment, reflecting broader shifts in consumer behavior toward faster, digitally enabled services. In line with this trend, Wafi Energy rolled out several marketing initiatives and entered into partnerships with platforms such as Oladoc and Faysal Bank, enabling features like contactless payments and bundled offerings at retail sites. In the lubricants segment, the company maintained its market presence through established product lines such as Shell Helix and Shell Rimula. A notable development was a strategic partnership with MG Motors, under which Shell Helix was named the official lubricant for MG vehicles in Pakistan—a move likely to reinforce brand visibility within a growing automotive segment. In response to ongoing concerns over counterfeit lubricant products, Wafi Energy launched an awareness campaign targeting both retailers and consumers, with the aim of promoting product authenticity and protecting brand integrity in key markets. In addition to energy projects, Wafi Energy has also pursued environmental restoration efforts. In early 2025, the company sponsored the planting of 30,000 mangrove trees at Karachi's Clifton Urban Forest. The mangroves, which continue to be maintained by the company, contribute to biodiversity and coastal protection, and are estimated to sequester between 9 to 15 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually—based on an absorption rate of 0.3 to 0.5 kilograms per tree per day. In another sustainability-focused initiative, Wafi Energy partnered with Concept Loop to build a retail fuel station in Karachi using more than 6,500 kilograms of recycled plastic. Located on Shahrah-e-Faisal, the site repurposed an estimated 1.3 million pieces of plastic waste that would otherwise have contributed to landfill volumes. The project integrates environmental considerations into retail infrastructure and reflects a broader push toward incorporating circular economy practices within the company's operations. Community and Social Impact Wafi Energy Pakistan continued to advance its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives in 2024, focusing on access to clean energy, road safety education, and community engagement. Through its 'Access to Clean Energy' program, the company extended support to four off-grid villages—Basti Tooba, Adam, Katimar, and Bullah Baloch—by installing solar-powered infrastructure such as water pumps, flour mills, and milk chillers. As part of its outreach near operational sites, the company worked with schools located around its terminals in Kemari and Chaklala. This outcome was attributed to ongoing training, emergency preparedness drills, and coordination with response agencies including Rescue 1122 and the National Highways & Motorway Police. Broader safety awareness campaigns were also held, including one during Ramadan and another focused on visibility issues related to tractor-trolleys. The company's youth development efforts were reflected in the induction of 20 interns and 8 management trainees under its 'Powering Future Leaders' program. These placements are part of a broader strategy to cultivate a pipeline of talent aligned with future organizational needs. Looking Ahead As Pakistan's energy sector continues to undergo structural and policy shifts, Wafi Energy Pakistan occupies a unique position—retaining the familiarity of a globally recognized brand while operating under new regional ownership. The company's recent financial recovery, visible investments in sustainability, and increased community outreach suggest a more localized and measured approach to operating in a complex and often unpredictable market. That said, the broader challenge lies in sustaining this trajectory without the operational support and institutional backing previously provided by its former parent, Shell.
