Gail Porter wows with wig transformation 20 years after alopecia diagnosis
The Scottish TV personality began losing her hair to alopecia – a condition that causes hair loss or baldness in some or all areas of the body – in 2005.
Several years later, her lashes and brows began growing back, and she sported a short, cropped look.
However, in 2010, the former model revealed that she had started losing her hair once more, and the following year, she unveiled a shaved head again.
Gail, 54, has always refused to wear a wig or hairpieces to conceal her baldness, having been keen on raising awareness of alopecia.
However, in recent years, she's started to experiment more, and last year, she unveiled a mid-length blonde wig to her followers.
Then, last night, she rocked a dramatic new look, heading to the British LGBT Awards with long locks.
The ceremony has been held annually since 2014 and is a huge moment in the LGBTQ+ community's calendar, with the likes of Jade, Billy Porter, and Ian 'H' Watkins receiving trophies this time.
Ahead of walking the red carpet, Gail took to Instagram to debut her blonde tresses, which she wore in waves as they cascaded down past her waist.
She tagged Amber Jean Rowan in the caption, thanking the wig maker – who has also made wigs for Strictly's Amy Dowden after her cancer treatment.
Taking to the comments, her 81,000 followers were keen to heap praise on her, with some having to do a double-take to make sure it was really her.
'Stunning 😍😍 Gawjeeeeus 😍😍', commented @mcchalkiewhite.
'Wow Gail. Beautiful with it and Beautiful without it', wrote @christine_anne_garstin.
'Gail you look amazing 😍😍😍', complimented @tinabear1969.
'Wow had to look twice 👏 looks really good 👍', wrote @neilcornish13.
Gail removed her wig for the event itself, posing proudly on the carpet alongside some of the UK's biggest LGBTQ+ talent and allies.
The former children's television presenter got her first wig in 20 years in January 2024, which she debuted on social media.
She wrote at the time: 'First wig ever!! Well, one that's coming home with me and the cat! Made with so much love and care ❤️Thank you so so much to everyone at @amberjeanshop Adore my new hair! X'
Speaking previously about losing her hair, the ex-Celebrity Big Brother housemate explained to Metro that she was forced to sleep on benches when work dried up as a result of her refusing to wear a wig.
Gail found that TV shows were only interested in booking her if she would talk about 'being bald', which also came while going through her divorce with her former husband and Toploader guitarist Dan Hipgrave.
As her situation worsened in the mid-00s, Gail was unable to make ends meet as she became 'more and more depressed'.
When appearing on the BBC Access All Podcast in August 2023, Gail also explained that work dried up very rapidly.
'It was so quick,' she said. 'I had long blonde hair, and then four weeks later I was completely bald.
'People didn't want to go near me for television or anything because I looked different.' More Trending
Last year, she was also praised for taking on her first photoshoot in a wig, with Sue Schilling, the chief executive of Alopecia UK, saying it is key to give people options as there is neither a 'right' nor a 'wrong' way to have alopecia.
Gail added to The Sun at the time: 'I don't think I'm a role model, but if me being bald or me wearing a wig gives someone the confidence to go and try it for themselves, I'm glad.
'I like the fact that women and men talk to me about hair loss.'

Former Married At First Sight Australia star Elizabeth Sobinoff has revealed on Instagram that she suffered a miscarriage between her two pregnancies. Former Married At First Sight participant Elizabeth Sobinoff has revealed she suffered a heartbreaking miscarriage between the births of her two children. The 34-year-old reality TV alum shared the personal news on Instagram on Monday, reflecting on a difficult chapter in her life. Sobinoff, who rose to fame during her appearances on MAFS in 2019 and 2020, is now a mother to an 18-month-old daughter and a newborn son, who was born in April. 'Saying goodbye to a chapter of life that had its ups and downs,' she wrote in her caption, adding: 'It is bittersweet to say goodbye to that chapter of my life. I have my two babies and it is the most beautiful feeling in the world.' In the post, she disclosed that her children are 17 months apart and shared that she experienced a miscarriage before falling pregnant with her second child. 'My babies are 17 months apart,' she wrote. 'I had a miscarriage between my two pregnancies. I lost a baby. The baby had a strong heartbeat after my first scan… Less than 48hrs later I was experiencing a threatened miscarriage. The scan was on a Wednesday and by that Sunday I lost the baby.' She went on to describe how deeply the experience affected her, revealing that she felt a strong need to become pregnant again following the loss. 'I was focused,' she wrote. 'I couldn't get past this. Losing the baby, I thought I need to give myself a rest. Around a week and a half later I fell pregnant with my son.' Reflecting further on the emotional aftermath, she admitted she had not fully processed the grief at the time. 'I just lost a baby that I wanted so badly,' she said. 'Then I fell pregnant, and I was told this. I hadn't dealt with my emotions. I pushed it down, deep inside. I remember getting the phone call that I was pregnant. My girlfriend was with me and I cried with happiness.' The MAFS star concluded her message by sharing how motherhood has shifted her focus in life. 'The last few years I've been pregnant. Now I find I'm on the journey of enjoying my children and finding my new identity, other than being pregnant. It is bittersweet.' Dubbed ' Australia 's Most Confident Bride' during her season six appearance on MAFS, Elizabeth is now married to engineer Alex Vega and has stepped away from reality TV to focus on her family life.

'I bought £34 Fortnum and Mason meal deal – and it left me flabbergasted'
When one man purchased his lunch, he didn't expect to be parting with such a large amount of cash, but he did say it was 'worth every penny' as a 'treat' in the park Outrage has been felt across the UK when the price of the humble meal deal went up, with some options coming in at around a fiver - but one man managed to buy one that cost him a whopping £34, and he was floored. Big Brother star and food critic Henry Southan said he was "hungry" and "by Fortnum and Mason," so he was going to "get a meal deal". However, how much of a deal it actually was is questionable. He bought three items for the money he paid, and at the start of the video, he pondered whether to get an iced tea, but instead decided to get the Fortnum and Mason champagne, Blanc de Blanc, joking it was "meal deal size". "I think I'm gonna go for a bagel," he said, as he queued for it. He asked for the "dapper salmon but with no capers," as he's not a fan. While he was waiting for his bagel, Henry decided to complete his meal deal with a Scotch egg as a "snack". When he stepped outside of Fortnum and Mason, he said: "I've got my meal deal, and I need to go and find somewhere to eat it." Henry decided to sit in the park and enjoy his food, saying he was going to start with the bagel. He said the dapper smoked salmon bagel was "quite a traditional one". He claimed it included "chive cream cheese with smoked salmon, lemon, red onion, cucumber". Henry joked he was going to do an "influencer-type reveal" of his bagel, showing the perfectly positioned filling of the bagel he purchased. He also commented on how "big" the bagel was, saying there was "no attractive way" to eat it because of its sheer size. "Mmm, that is a thing of beauty," he commented after taking a big bite. Henry said: "What I love is the smokiness of the salmon, the fresh kind of crunch of the red onion and the cucumber. That is a great bagel. I think I need a drink." He then proceeded to get out the champagne bottle he'd bought, 'cheersing' the camera, and then drinking it straight from the bottle. It was then time for him to eat the snack, saying he was "excited" about scoffing it. "If you didn't know, Fortnum and Mason invented the Scotch egg". He broke it apart, and the yolk of the Scotch egg was runny, which is incredibly rare. "I have not felt this happy for a very long time," he gushed, saying: "Oh, come on, are you joking me? That is so delicious." He then got the receipt out, admitting the "champagne did cause this meal deal to become quite expensive," saying it was almost £20. But, he did say that "obviously you're not drinking this all the time," claiming it was for "special occasions". The foodie detailed the bagel was £9, but is "huge," and the Scotch egg was £5.30, but "worth every bloody penny". "So, in total for that meal deal, I paid £34.55," he admitted, joking that he "hates himself sometimes".

Irvine Welsh puts in double shift on publicity round
EDINBURGH festival time and the quest for publicity is in full swing. Smart operators like Irvine Welsh know it's best to plug early and often, even if it means a Sunday morning shift. Sunday Brunch was a mix of celebrity chat, cooking, and anything else the producers could throw in the pot to fill three hours of live television, including a competition to guess the age of expired food. This was the 'zoo' format revived, with too many guests talking at once and the crew supplying chortles off. When not gabbing, the celebs stuffed their faces with whatever came out of the kitchen. Not an appetising sight at 10am. Welsh was there to flog his new book, Men in Love, and accompanying album. All was well until he referred in less than flattering terms to the vocal styles of some singers today. It was enough that the presenter, Tim Lovejoy, felt he had to apologise. Contrast this with Katie Razzall's Irvine Welsh: The Next Chapter, which has been aired on the BBC News channel and has its network debut on Monday. This was an old-school, pre-recorded sit-down, largely consisting of Razzall lining up a subject and allowing Welsh to talk at length. It didn't always work. On Scottish independence, for instance, Razzall asked if he thought 'the steam had gone out of the fight'. 'The steam's gone out of every fight now,' said Welsh. 'People are very despondent about the mainstream political institutions and their ability to change and adapt. Whether it's supporters of Scottish independence or supporters of anything, whether it's any kind of radical or revolutionary change or any kind of political change, people are just waiting for the system to fall apart rather than push it.' What did he think about the current political landscape in Scotland, or the swell in support for Reform UK? Detailed follow-ups might have produced tighter, more interesting answers. The chat occasionally wandered, at one point ending up in Alan Partridge territory. After footage of Welsh sparring, Razzall asked if boxing was useful to his writing. 'Boxing keeps me thin,' he said. 'Does that make you a good writer? 'Yeah, being thin does make you a good writer, because you have to be comfortable in a chair. If you're sitting down and you're overweight, it must be quite uncomfortable.' Was he being serious? It was hard to tell. Never mind, Razzall was on a roll. Should Trainspotting have won the Booker prize? 'Emphatically no, it would have been the kiss of death. Because I would just have been another writer, another writer who won the Booker prize. Because I became the anti-Booker prize writer, I was pushed into a different category, and it gave me a radical, anti-establishment cachet that I maybe didn't deserve even, but I'll take it anyway.' Did he still feel anti-establishment? Sir Irvine Welsh, if they came offering? 'I've no interest in that kind of thing. They've got nothing I want,' he said. Good publicity, though. Irvine Welsh: The Next Chapter, BBC2, 7pm tonight
