Columbia shoppers say this 'freezer' dress is 'versatile,' 'comfortable' and 'breathable' — so I put it to the test for summer

Yahoo5 days ago
From portable neck fans to cooling towels, I'm all about finding simple ways to beat the summer heat. Since entering menopause as part of my treatment for early-stage breast cancer, when the temperature rises outside, my body's internal temperature really struggles to regulate. After conducting some retail research, I came across Columbia's Freezer Dress, which features built-in cooling technology.
I took it with me on a recent trip to Florida, where the temperatures reached 40°C, and wore it during one of the hottest weeks in Toronto I can remember. In short, I spent a great deal of time in this "cute and functional" dress, and I can see why shoppers can't get enough of this "summer staple."
BTW — the Freezer Dress is currently on sale right now for $52, 30 per cent off its original price. If you're perimenopausal or menopausal — or just have a hard time in the summer heat — read on for my honest review.
This lightweight "freezer" dress falls right above the knee and is constructed using patented cooling and sun protection technology. The Omni-Wick and Omni-Freeze fabric keeps you dry by pulling moisture to the dress's surface, allowing it to evaporate and keep you cool.
With the built-in Omni-Shade UPF 50 protection, the dress also keeps your skin protected from harmful UVA/UVB rays.
The empire waist, A-line dress is made up of 92 per cent polyester and 8 per cent elastane, allowing for just the right amount of stretch, making it a great outfit for everything from running errands or playing volleyball on the beach.
It's available in eight colourways — all on sale — and in standard and plus sizes, meaning there's a large range of sizes available to suit your body.
$52 $75 at Columbia
Very lightweight: Even on the hottest days, the fabric was breathable and didn't feel heavy on my skin. It never clung to my body — and kept me cool and comfortable even when the sun was at its peak.
If you tend to overheat, this dress is a lifesaver: When it gets so hot I can't cool off, it can be very triggering for my menopausal body. But when I wear this dress, I feel more in control of my body and less anxious that high temperatures will inevitably lead to sweaty discomfort.
It doesn't smell: OK, I'll be honest: I thought that a dress made to absorb sweat would leave me a bit stinky by the end of the day. But I smelled great!
Love the length: The fun and flirty dress falls right above the knee, which is great when you're on the go but still want some coverage. The skirt flares slightly, making it great for outdoor sports. I played tennis in the dress on a super humid day and felt cool and comfortable.
It would be even better with a built-in bra: I have a modest chest and haven't worn a bra since my double mastectomy years ago, but those with a bigger bust might appreciate more built-in support. Although the thicker straps do mean you can easily conceal a sports bra underneath.
⭐️ 4.6/5 stars
🏅 2,000+ reviews
💬 "Cute and functional"
$52 $75 at Columbia
The Columbia Freezer dress has more than 1,600 5-star reviews, and 93 per cent of shoppers recommend it. Some even said they own the fun frock in several different colours.
One customer described the "fabulous" dress as "easy to wash" and "quick to dry" — perfect for summer.
"Cute and functional," raved another, who said they wear the "summer staple" dress to both "outdoor activities" and "casual outings."
Another shopper praised the dress for being "extremely comfortable," "versatile" and "breathable."
"Perfect travel dress!" said another.
However, sizing proved to be an issue for some. While many shoppers said it runs true to size, some did suggest sizing up. Some shoppers also said they wished the dress were complete with pockets.
As a busy 48-year-old mom of two, comfort and convenience are the priority for me in summer. The Columbia Women's PFG Freezer III Dress is cute, comfortable and doesn't cling. When an oppressively hot day arrives, it has me covered and helps me beat the heat. Do I wish it had a built-in sports bra? Sure. But the thicker straps mean you can easily wear a bra underneath, which is enough for me.
While it didn't personally bother me, some shoppers also complained about the lack of pockets, and some said to size up.

7 Backcountry outdoor gear deals that blow Amazon Prime Day out of the water

Amazon isn't really known for having a highly curated selection of high-end hiking gear or technical outerwear, but Backcountry is. Best of all, amid the massive Amazon Prime Day sales event, Backcountry is having its own wallet-busting flash sale with some of my favorite gear from Columbia and Marmot reduced by as much as 65% off. The most impressive deal is on the Marmot half-zip fleece. Normally $114, this cozy, technical layer is only $40 right now on Backcountry, with both men's and women's styles eligible for savings. That's not all, my favorite Smartwool Hiking Socks are 35% off, and Camelbak Vacuum Mugs are just $16. That's just scratching the surface! Find details and links to these deals and more below. This slim, cup-holder-friendly vacuum-insulated travel mug boasts 16 ounces of capacity for hot or cold beverages and features an easy-sip cap, making it a fab travel companion. Also, doesn't it look snazzy AF in that metallic 'Moss' Green? My favorite comfortable, breathable, warm, and long-lasting Merino wool hiking socks don't go on sale all that often, so don't let this deal walk on by. Sorry, dudes, this bargain is ladies' only. Little waistpacks are supremely handy, especially come summertime, when you've got the essentials to carry but limited pocket real estate. For less than $20, the Eastpak Spring Pack is here to rescue you from this conundrum with a wide range of eye-pleasing colorways to choose from, both on sale and full price. If you'd prefer a pack with lots of separate compartments for greater organization than the Eastpak above, consider this fresh-looking option from Dakine. While I don't personally own the Jagger Hybrid, I do own several other Dakine packs, which have served me well over the years. So, I have no doubt this bad boy will meet your needs, too. A comfy, stylish and warm Columbia fleece jacket for just $34? That's right, folks. This deal, available for the guys, applies to three styles, ranging from timeless to funky-fun, with tons of sizes still available... for now. Marmot may not be as big a brand as Patagonia or Columbia, but maybe it should be, because its outerwear is just as good. This ultra-plus half-zip fleece, for instance, is packed with features, highly rated, and a whopping 65% off. Choose from two discounted styles. Guys can also take advantage of the 65% off Marmot Half-Zip Fleece deal on with just one style, but plenty of sizes still on offer. Trust me, you'll thank me when you're snug as a bug in a rug this fall in your new, wallet-friendly fleece. (You're welcome).

If you're an outdoor lover like me, forget Prime Day — I've found 9 deals under $25 at REI, including Patagonia and Cotopaxi

Prime Day is here — have you heard? Amazon's sale event is running through Friday, July 11th, and we're tracking the best Prime Day deals live. Me? I'm an outdoor lover, so I want to shop for outdoor gear, too! I love REI for its wide variety of brands and the major discounts. Right now, you can get tons of deals under $25 at REI, including iconic brands like Patagonia and Columbia. You can grab a HydroFlask 32 oz Tumbler for just $23 from REI — an amazing saving. Or you can get your kid a Columbia fleece, $8 at REI. I'm Erin Bashford, and I love hiking and spending time outdoors. I've got loads of outdoor gear, including products from Patagonia, Columbia, Teva, Buff, and Merrell. I've hiked Mount Fuji in Japan (wearing my Merrell hiking boots and my Patagonia jacket!), Mount Hood in Oregon, and almost every National Park in South Korea and the U.K.. There are a few versions of this sale. The cheapest fleece is the pictured red shade, just $8 down from $30. It's still available in all sizes, so it will suit little and big kids. There's also a black version available in all sizes, but it's $11 — so if you want to save the extra $3, I'd go for the red! How gorgeous is this bandana? I'm obsessed. REI has a range of graphic bandanas under its own brand, but I like this color the best. As it's a bandana, it's crazy versatile: use it as a headband, a handkerchief, a backpack decoration, and more. It's even made from organic cotton! I have a Buff, and I love it so much. I don't go on any hikes without it now. This is the winter Buff, so you'd wear this as a functional scarf during the colder months. This Buff is made out of 2 plastic bottles — so you know you're helping the planet while wearing! REI's own brand beanie wicks moisture and is breathable while also keeping you warm. It's 30% wool, but completely itch-free, making it the perfect versatile fall or winter hat! This beanie is available in green, orangey red, and blue at a discount. Other colors remain full price. Stance socks are described as really comfy by users online, and these beautiful ones are no different. They're reinforced in the heels and the toes to prevent rubbing, and are made from combed cotton so they're uber soft. Every outdoor lover needs to have a reliable camping utensil set, right? This handy one from UCO is just $13 and has a fork, spoon, plate, and bowl. It has a lifetime warranty and a leakproof lid, so you can chuck it into your backpack, worry-free. This is the perfect headband for cold weather. The soft fabric will keep your ears warm and also make you look stylish! I love the mauve color (pictured), but the sale extends to the red shade too. This headband actually has extra-long fibers, which help you stay warmer than ever. I'm actually in love with this t-shirt. How cute is that alpaca? (Or is it a llama?) It's available in blue and brown, and in all sizes except large. This shirt is made from a mixture of organic cotton and recycled polyester, so it's good for the planet, too. The HydroFlask 32 oz size with a straw is on sale for $11 right now, at just $23. It's discounted in dusky pink (pictured) and gray, but I love this pink shade. It's got a secure lid, so you don't need to worry about it spilling when you're out and about. If you're feeling in the mood for some Amazon deals, be sure to check out our Amazon Prime Day live blog for major savings. We've rounded up discounts on everything from kitchen appliances to TVs. Check out all the stuff you can get for free this Prime Day too!
