India's top soccer league 2025-26 season suspended
The 13-team Indian Super League was scheduled to begin in September, but Football Sports Development Limited confirmed Friday it's on hold. The organizer's contract expires in December and hasn't been renewed.
'In the absence of a confirmed contractual framework beyond December, we find ourselves unable to effectively plan, organize, or commercialize the 2025-26 ISL season,' the FSDL said in a letter to clubs.
The season is 'on hold until further clarity emerges on the contractual structure,' it added.
ISL club Kerala Blasters announced Friday it allowed Spanish striker Jesus Jimenez to leave for a club in Poland.
There is still optimism, however, that there will still be a new season.
'The ISL will go ahead, maybe not with the name of the ISL,' Delhi FC director Ranjit Bajaj told The Associated Press, adding that he blames mismanagement from the federation.
Earlier this month, India's national team parted ways with coach Manolo Marquez after poor results put qualification for the 2027 Asian Cup in doubt.

The deal includes an option for another season. Modric grew up supporting Milan because his idol and fellow Croat, Zvonimir Boban, played for the club in the 1990s. Modric announced in May that he was leaving Madrid after helping the Spanish powerhouse to 28 titles: Six European Cups, six Club World Cups, five European Super Cups, four Spanish leagues, two Copas del Rey and five Spanish Super Cups. Milan finished eighth in Serie A last season and missed out on a spot in Europe. The Italian club rehired Massimiliano Allegri as coach after the season, replacing the fired Sergio Conceicao. Real Madrid signs young left back Álvaro Carreras from Benfica on a 6-year deal
MADRID (AP) — Real Madrid reached a deal to sign Álvaro Carreras from Benfica on Monday, bringing back the young left back who came through the Spanish club's youth squads. Madrid said the 22-year-old Carreras is arriving on a six-year contract. Financial details of the transfer were not immediately released. Carreras played in Madrid's youth academy from 2017-20. The Spaniard joined Benfica from Manchester United after being named the English club's best under-23 player of the 2021-22 season. He won this year's Portuguese League Cup with Benfica. Carreras will be officially introduced by Madrid on Tuesday. Madrid was eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain in the semifinals of the Club World Cup. Madrid had a disappointing season by its standards, finishing runner-up to rival Barcelona in La Liga and being eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Champions League despite having signed France star Kylian Mbappé last summer. ___ AP soccer:
