‘My fellow South Africans': Here's what you need to know ahead of Ramaphosa's address tonight

The Star6 days ago
Opposition parties, including the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Democratic Alliance, MK Party, ActionSA and IFP, are calling for Police Minister Senzo Mchunu to be fired following explosive allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
Sunday marks a week since Mkhwanazi publicly accused Mchunu of interfering in police investigations and protecting criminal networks.
Following the explosive allegations, there's been increasing pressure on President Cyril Ramaphosa to act ahead of his scheduled address to the nation at 7.30pm on Sunday.
Mkhwanazi accused Mchunu of disbanding the Political Killings Task Team in March, effectively withdrawing 121 active dockets, many linked to politically motivated killings.
He presented WhatsApp messages, South African Police Service (SAPS) documents, and cellphone records, alleging a coordinated effort to dismantle the unit.
He also implicated Brown Mogotsi, a 'comrade' of Mchunu, in communicating with suspects, including businessman Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala, who secured a R360 million SAPS contract in 2024.
The contract has since been canceled.
According to Mkhwanazi, Mogotsi informed Matlala of the unit's disbandment and that SAPS crime detection head Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya had taken over the dockets.
Financial links allegedly connect Mchunu, Mogotsi and Matlala to political fundraisers and events.
'This was no accident,' Mkhwanazi said.
'It was a calculated move to shield a criminal syndicate embedded in law enforcement and politics.'
Since its formation in 2018, the task team handled 612 cases and secured more than 100 convictions. Mkhwanazi said efforts to shut down the unit intensified after weapons linked to high-profile assassinations were uncovered.
Mchunu, in a December 2024 letter to National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Fannie Masemola, claimed the unit had 'outlived its usefulness.'
However, Masemola later denied authorising its closure.
In response to the claims, several opposition parties have lodged criminal complaints.
The DA filed a complaint at Cape Town Central police station, while the MK Party opened a case at Brooklyn police station.
The EFF also filed a complaint with Parliament's Ethics Committee, accusing Mchunu of constitutional violations and unlawful interference in SAPS operations.
The DA said it expects Ramaphosa to take decisive action.
EFF leader Julius Malema said Mchunu should be dismissed immediately.
'Well, the president should fire Mchunu immediately,' Malema told reporters Saturday at the funeral of former Deputy President David Mabuza in Barberton, Mpumalanga.
'He is new in the job but already tainted. He went to that institution to do wrong things.'
MK Party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela said: 'We refuse to stand idle in the face of injustice and remain dedicated to upholding the course of the law.'
Zwakele Mncwango, KwaZulu-Natal chairperson of ActionSA, rejected the idea of a commission of inquiry, saying it would be wasteful.
'They must face jail. They must go through the prosecution processes like everyone else. Why must we have commissions and waste money?' Mncwango said.
However, the IFP called for an independent commission of inquiry led by a retired judge.
'The SAPS ecosystem cannot self-investigate, as it is both subject to and a participant in the allegations,' said IFP national spokesperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa.
'We further call for Minister Mchunu to be placed on special leave until the commission concludes its work.'
He said Ramaphosa must act swiftly 'for the sake of national interest and security.
Meanwhile, ordinary South Africans also echoed the political outrage.
'Ramaphosa should use his address to deliver a strong anti-corruption message. To restore order and stability, he should dismiss Mchunu and also Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane,' said Dipuo Modiba from Mokopane, in Limpopo.
'Ramaphosa must open a commission to investigate the allegations made against Mchunu,' said Londeka Kunene from Soshanguve, Pretoria.
In a statement, the presidency said Ramaphosa would 'take the nation into his confidence' during his address, following engagements with key stakeholders.
There's been reports that Mchunu asked Ramaphosa to place him on leave following explosive allegations against him.
IOL News previously reported political analyst Goodenough Mashego said Ramaphosa may opt to suspend rather than fire Mchunu, given his role in securing African National Congress (ANC) support in KwaZulu-Natal.
'In a normal democracy, a minister facing such allegations would step aside. But because Mchunu played a key role in KZN, Ramaphosa may avoid firing him to keep that support base intact.'
Mashego said Ramaphosa could use the moment to reshuffle his Cabinet and appoint someone with real policing experience, even from outside the ANC.
'This is the time to look beyond party lines,' he said. 'There's a Government of National Unity now. Ramaphosa could appoint someone from another party.'

Pan-African vision: MK party backs strategic alliance with Morocco

The MK Party's support for a strategic partnership between South Africa and Morocco aims to reshape African geopolitics and foster unity, economic emancipation, and territorial integrity. In a bold move to reshape African geopolitics and foster deeper regional cooperation, the Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has announced its support for a strategic partnership between South Africa and the Kingdom of Morocco. This alignment is framed as a step towards African unity, economic emancipation, and territorial integrity, themes deeply embedded in the continent's ongoing struggle for sovereignty and self-determination. With historical ties, shared values, and common security and economic interests, the MK Party's proposal lays the groundwork for a powerful bilateral alliance that could redefine Africa's role on the global stage. Pan-African vision The MK Party is advocating for a robust strategic alliance between South Africa and Morocco. The goal is to enhance African unity, uphold territorial integrity, and pursue economic independence. Shared anti-colonial legacy Both nations emerged from anti-colonial struggles: Morocco from French and Spanish rule, South Africa from apartheid. Morocco supported South Africa's liberation movement, including early assistance to Umkhonto weSizwe in 1962. Mutual respect for sovereignty The MK Party aligns with Morocco's stance on preserving national unity and defending against separatist threats. The defence of South Africa's own territorial integrity is cited as a parallel struggle. Geopolitical alignment Both countries support multipolar diplomacy and UN/African Union reform to amplify African voices. Joint concerns include regional destabilisation caused by foreign-backed separatism. Economic synergy South Africa and Morocco are among Africa's top investors. The MK Party sees potential for increased intra-African trade, particularly under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Key areas for collaboration: agriculture, food security, digital transformation, and infrastructure. Cultural and social exchange Shared cultural diversity and history position both nations to lead in Afrocentric education and youth exchange. Proposals include curriculum sharing, heritage festivals, and language programmes. Controversial but strategic support for Morocco's Sahara position MK supports Morocco's claim over Western Sahara, citing historical legitimacy and tribal allegiance to the Moroccan throne. The 1975 Green March is described as a non-violent decolonisation effort. Morocco's autonomy proposal is seen as a realistic compromise that ensures peace and local governance under Moroccan sovereignty. Roadmap for bilateral strengthening Proposed diplomatic framework for collaboration at the UN and AU. Economic agreement, including a potential free trade deal between the two nations. Joint security initiatives to tackle regional threats. Academic, cultural, and technological cooperation aimed at empowering youth and promoting African identity. MK envisions the South Africa–Morocco partnership as a cornerstone for Africa's renaissance with the alliance grounded in historical solidarity and shared goals of peace, stability, and sustainable development. Disbanded police task team ‘tried to arrest Mchunu and Sibiya'

A month before Mchunu instructed the unit should be closed, it had reportedly begun working on arresting Sibiya. The task team at the centre of a fight between 'on leave' Senzo Mchunu and KZN police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi had reportedly tried to arrest the police minister and deputy police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya. Mchunu instructed national police commissioner Fannie Masemola to disband the political killing task team in December 2024, suggesting that it did not add value to policing. However, a month before the closure instructions were given, it had reportedly begun working on arresting Sibiya. City Press sources within the security cluster said task team members had approached prosecutors in Gauteng and later Mpumalanga to secure a warrant of arrest. 'Last month, the police members who were travelling in a Mercedes-Benz V-class Kombi tried to obtain an arrest warrant from the director of public prosecutions for both Sibiya and Mchunu but were turned away. They were told that there was insufficient evidence that warranted arrest,' a source told the paper. Masemola confirmed earlier this month that he had not acted on the order to disband the unit, while it is unclear if his deputy, Sibiya, had done so on his behalf. In explosive allegations two weeks ago, Mkhwanazi claimed the task team had been shut down due to political interference and alleged that top police officials, including Mchunu, were linked to dodgy businessmen and alleged criminal syndicates. Mchunu denied these allegations and a judicial commission of inquiry has been established to investigate the claims. The minister and Sibiya have been placed on special leave amid the allegations. Mchunu was defiant on Friday, telling ANC supporters that black generals in the police had been placed there by the ANC, and suggesting they should be grateful to the party for their positions. 'The ANC appointed black generals so that we also have generals in the army and in the police. They should not trample on this opportunity they were given by the ANC,' Mchunu said. 'They got this opportunity through blood and sweat. There are those who deserved to wear those mantles and camouflage uniforms, but they are dead and they never got that opportunity. They died in the struggle. 'The day South Africa allows one person, whoever it is, to suspect someone and then investigate them, and then become a prosecutor, and then a judge, and issue a verdict all in one place. That would be the direct reversal of what the struggle for justice is about. 'That will be the end of all of us in the country,' he said. Mchunu said the justice system allowed allegations to be made, but had a system in place to test the claims and for the accused to defend themselves. 'It is fair to wait for the commission to deliberate. I support what the president decided. It is fair and square.' Mchunu 'not immune' from prosecution Ramaphosa's decision to place Mchunu on special leave has sparked fierce debate, with the MK party taking the matter to court and calling for the minister to be fired. ALSO READ: MK party takes Ramaphosa to ConCourt over Mchunu special leave decision There are also concerns that while he is on leave, Mchunu's influence in the police may impede the investigation. Parliament's legal advisor, advocate Andile Tetyana, said on Wednesday that Mchunu's leave did not grant him immunity. 'Minister Mchunu is not clothed with legal immunity by virtue of him being on special leave. We know for a fact now that he will be a material witness in the work of the commission and should criminal misconduct be found on his part, he will be charged and prosecuted,' he told parliament on Wednesday. Ramaphosa has defended his decision, saying punitive action against Mchunu would set a dangerous precedent. 'These allegations are serious. They are also untested. 'It is therefore necessary that we establish the facts through an independent, credible and thorough process so that we can ensure accountability and safeguard public confidence in the police service,' he said in Parliament this week. Duduzile Zuma on July riots threat: 'Round 2 will be worse'

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla – the daughter of MK Party President Jacob Zuma – has threatened a 'round two' of July riots, after the party demanded the protection of KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. The political party is demanding the dismissal of Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu – who was placed on a leave of absence – amid claims he orchestrated a criminal syndicate. The party also wants President Cyril Ramaphosa to tender his resignation. In an Instagram post, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla pledged her allegiance to Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi once again. The daughter of the former president threatened to rally the MK Party into action if anything happened to the KZN provincial police commissioner. Posting a flier for the party's protest march, which occurred on Friday, 18 July, she shared: 'Once they touch him, kuzonyiwa. Round two will be worse. Let's protect this man'. Earlier this month, she defiantly posted: 'Let them touch you. We're ready for round two!'. Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla has pledged allegience to KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Images via Instagram: @duduzilezuma_sambundla Duduzile is referring to claims she incited violence through her social media posts during the July 2021 riots. During the civil unrest, the 42-year-old former housewife retweeted several videos of the violence and looting, which was a direct reaction to her father's incarceration on contempt-of-court charges shortly before. Duduzile is charged with contravening the Protection of Constitutional Democracy against Terrorist and Related Activities Act (POCDATARA) and incitement to commit violence. She will appear in the Durban High Court again on 14 August. During the protest march in Pretoria on Friday, Duduzile-Sambudla Zuma and other MK Party members demanded that action be taken to protect Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Their list of demands included: Arrest of Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu Police file dockets of political killings should be returned to the Special Task Force Arrest of those implicated by Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, including deputy national commissioner, Shadrack Sibiya President Cyril Ramaphosa's resignation MK Party national organiser Joe Ndlela handed over a memorandum at the Union Buildings and told the crowd that they were giving the government '14 days to respond.'
