Mourners to gather in Portugal for wake of tragic Diogo Jota
Jota and his younger brother, Andre Silva, died in a car accident in Zamora, Spain, in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Jose Manuel Macedo, parish priest at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar in Sao Cosme, told the PA news agency in a translated message that a wake for the brothers will take place at 8am at the nearby Capela da Ressurreicao before their funeral at the Igreja Matriz on Saturday at 10am.
According to BBC Sport, Jota was returning for pre-season training next week via ferry after being advised not to fly following minor surgery.

Reds captain Virgil van Dijk said on Instagram he was 'absolutely devastated and in total disbelief.'
The Dutch defender wrote in a post alongside a picture of Jota with the Premier League trophy 'What a human being, what a player, but most importantly what an unbelievable family man.
'You meant so much to all of us and you always will! For your family to lose two sons, a husband and a father is just unimaginable. So cruel and unfair.' 'My heart is breaking for all of your beautiful family, for Rute and for your kids. I promise you that in these difficult times and beyond we will always be there for your family. A champion forever, number 20 forever. It's been a privilege to have stood by your side on the pitch, and to have been your friend off it.
'We will miss you beyond words and never forget you. Your legacy will live on, we will make sure of it! Rest in perfect peace Diogo & Andre.'
Andy Robertson, one of the players with the longest association with Jota, also paid an emotional tribute.
'The ones I'm thinking about most right now are the family. Their loss is too much to bear. I'm so sorry that they have lost two such precious souls – Diogo and Andre,' he posted on Instagram.
'For the team and the club, we'll try to cope with this together… however long that takes. For me, I want to talk about my mate. My buddy. The bloke I loved and will miss like crazy. I could talk about him as a player for hours, but none of that feels like it matters right now.
'It's the man. The person. He was such a good guy. The best. So genuine. Just normal and real. Full of love for the people he cared about. Full of fun. He was the most British foreign player I've ever met.
'I can't believe we're saying goodbye. It's too soon, and it hurts so much. But thank you for being in my life, mate – and for making it better.'
'Heartbroken' former manager Jurgen Klopp, for whom his Christian faith has played a big part in his life, wrote on Instagram 'This is a moment where I struggle! There must be a bigger purpose! But I can't see it!' Liverpool, who are supporting Jota's family, have opened a book of condolence, both physical in the Anfield Road Stand and online, lowered flags to half-mast and closed all stores and the museum and suspended all tours until Monday. UEFA announced a moment of silence would be observed at Women's Euro 2025 matches on Thursday and Friday, while the 'devastated' Portuguese Football Federation said: 'Diogo Jota was not only a fantastic player…but also an extraordinary person who was respected by all his team-mates and opponents.
'We have lost two champions. Their deaths represent irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything we can to honour their legacy every day.'
Fans left wreaths, scarves and shirts at a makeshift shrine outside Anfield, with Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, attending a conference in Liverpool, among those to lay flowers in person. There were similar scenes outside Molineux.
Local police, investigating the accident at 1230am on Thursday in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora, said 'In the absence of a conclusion of the experts' evidence, everything points that a car left the road, due to a tyre blowout while overtaking.'
Jota won 49 caps and scored 14 goals for Portugal, last month winning the Nations League for a second time. Diogo won a Premier League, FA Cup and two Carabao Cups with Liverpool, where he signed from Wolves. Pic:International team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo wrote on X: 'It doesn't make sense. Just now we were together in the National Team, just now you had gotten married.
'To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in Peace, Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you.'
Jota scored 65 goals in 182 Liverpool appearances, nine coming last season as Arne Slot's side won the Premier League title, having previously lifted the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
He signed for Wolves, initially on loan, from Atletico Madrid in 2017 and helped win the Championship in his first season, ultimately scoring 44 goals in 131 appearances.
Jota's career began at Portuguese side Pacos de Ferreira before moving to Atletico, where he did not play a game but was loaned out to Porto.

Joey O'Brien era off to perfect start as Shelbourne beat Cork City
The Joey O'Brien era got off to a flyer on Friday night, with two goals inside the opening six minutes setting them on course for victory over a sluggish Cork City. But the Reds will have to be more clinical next week when they kick off their Champions League campaign against Linfield, as they should have punished a terrible defensive display by their visitors with more than the three they scored. City captain Charlie Lyons' night went from bad to worse when he gifted Shels their opener after just 80 seconds, and was then sent-off five minutes into the second-half. The decision by referee Robert Harvey to take out his red card seemed harsh, but if he erred in making that call, it was nothing compared to the catalogue of errors on display from the visitors. They had goalkeeper Conor Brann, stepping in for departed Dutch net-minder Tein Troost, to thank in part for Shels' failure to register a more comprehensive win. Poor finishing had a role to play in that too. But even Brann, who looked sharp all night, had a moment to forget when he allowed JJ Lunney's cross from the right sail straight into the net for the hosts' third. O'Brien, confirmed to the Shels post on a permanent basis 24 hours before the visit of Cork, will be pleased with the tempo shown by his players throughout. It's as if they were playing at 1.5x speed compared to their sluggish visitors, both in and out of possession. The contributions by early goalscorers Harry Wood and Mipo Odubeko in closing down their opponents were particularly notable, because of the area in which they were turning the ball over. Wood was at it right from the start and he needed just 80 seconds to ruin Lyons' night by charging down the defender's attempted clearance and opening the scoring. He still had a bit of work to do when he raced into the box, as Brann quickly advanced, but he did well to lift the ball over the keeper and beyond the outstretched boot of Freddie Anderson on the goal-line. Lyons kicked the goalpost in frustration. He had plenty of time to clear, as Wood was at least eight yards away when he took his first touch to control a short pass from Brann. In a game of inches and milliseconds, he took far too long to set his feet and gave the Shels man every opportunity to pounce. A dream start to O'Brien's permanent reign got even better four minutes later when Odubeko doubled the Reds' advantage. This time Matthew Kiernan was too slow to react as the former West Ham prospect played a one-two with Wood and swept the ball home from close range. Poor Brann, making his first start in the Premier Division, must have wondered what he had left himself in for, but it was his actions that kept the scoreline down as the half wore on. As Wood let fly from 20 yards, he stretched to tip the ball over his bar, and his quick feet moments later played a part in another missed opportunity by the hosts. More sloppy play in the Cork defence saw Odubeko intercept a Darragh Crowley pass to Anderson. Brann was quickly off his line to narrow the angle and the Shels forward dragged his shot across goal and wide of the far post. With Cork stubbornly refusing to learn their lesson, and Odubeko charging the ball down from the resulting goal-kick, you feared for Ger Nash's side. Yet somehow they were within just a goal of Shels by half-time, thanks to a classy Kitt Nelson strike in the 42nd minute. From an Anderson lay-off, he drilled the ball first time across goal and inside the left-hand post. If City fans harboured any hopes of a swashbuckling second-half comeback, they were short-lived, thanks to a combination of more dreadful defending - including more intercepted passes inside the final-third - and a harsh red card. Lyons' night went from bad to worse when a poor first touch saw him lunge for the ball and catch Reds midfielder Kerr McInroy. Given that the defender's foot wasn't raised when contact was made with the Scot, yellow would have been an appropriate punishment, but referee Rob Harvey saw things differently. Shels continued to push for more goals, and their third came from an unlikely source, as Lunney's cross from the right curled directly into the far corner of the net. Shelbourne: Conor Kearns; Mark Coyle, Paddy Barrett, Kameron Ledwidge; Evan Caffrey (Sean Boyd 61), JJ Lunney, Kerr McInroy (Daniel Kelly 60), James Norris; Ally Coote (Ellis Chapman 60), Harry Wood (John O'Sullivan 78); Mipo Odubeko (John Martin 71). Cork City: Conor Brann; Milan Mbeng, Darragh Crowley, Freddie Anderson (Charlie Lutz 76), Charlie Lyons, Matthew Kiernan; Kitt Nelson (Cathal O'Sullivan 56), Greg Bolger, Sean Murray (Evan McLaughlin 46), Alex Nolan (Fiacre Kelleher 56); Sean Maguire (Malik Dijksteel 46).
