Not Sachin Tendulkar! Harry Brook Declares England Batter As 'Best Of All Time'
Harry Brook called Joe Root the 'best Test batter of all time,' even though Brook recently replaced Root as the top Test batter in ICC rankings.
Ending all media comparisons in one swipe, Harry Brook declared Joe Root as the 'best Test batter of all time' on Monday (July 21). Brook, who replaced Root as the number one Test batter in the ICC men's rankings recently, said he was still 'not in the same league' as the senior Englishman and would rather he be at the top.
Root, over the past couple of years, has made a strong case for himself as the greatest English batter. With more than 2500 runs to his name since 2023, he has gone past Alastair Cook's tally of 12472 Test runs. He's now only 120 runs away from leapfrogging Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting to become the second-highest run-scorer in the history of the format, which will leave only Sachin Tendulkar ahead of him.
'Everybody wants to be number one, don't they?" Brook said about the rankings and comparisons in a press conference. 'Him probably more than anybody else. He's a phenomenal player. I'm not in the same league as him, so I'll happily let him have it. He's played for 12-13 years or however long he's played. In my opinion, he's the best Test batter of all time, so I'll let him have that one for now," he added.
Brook and Root have been among England's best batters in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy so far, helping the hosts take a 2-1 lead. However, their biggest examination would be the fourth Test on a Manchester surface, which is likely to be of most help for bowlers so far.
Meanwhile, England have included bowling all-rounder Liam Dawson in their playing 11 for the injured Shoaib Bashir. Brook seemed pleased with the 35-year-old's return to Test cricket after eight years.
'He's a wily old fox, very experienced. He's a very skillful cricketer as well. He's played everywhere, played against everyone. . . Hopefully he can land it in the foot-holes and create a bit of spice out of there and some opportunities to take wickets. He's obviously a very good batter as well, he's got nearly 20 First-Class hundreds. That's adding to our strength in batting. He's a good bloke, he's willing to always fight for the team. He's very competitive and it's good to have him here," Brook said.

‘Not in spirit of the game': Shubman Gill justifies his spat with Zak Crawley at Lord's, shares update on Akash Deep
Shubman Gill opened up on his heated exchange with Zak Crawley during the Lord's Test, accusing England of time-wasting tactics 'not in the spirit of the game.' Gill also shared updates on India's bowling options for the must-win 4th Test at Old Trafford. read more Shubman Gill has defended his actions on Day 3 at Lord's, where he got involved in an exchange with Zak Crawley. PTI/Reuters India captain Shubman Gill has finally spoken about his heated exchange with Zak Crawley during the third Test at Lord's, saying the situation built up after England's time-wasting tactics and was 'not in the spirit of the game.' India and England players were involved in several altercations during that game, which the home side eventually won by a narrow margin of 22 runs. The spat that caught the most attention was between Gill and Crawley on Day 3. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Gill explained what really happened in the final moments of Day 3 when Jasprit Bumrah was bowling. Speaking at the pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Gill accused the English batters of deliberately wasting time by coming 90 seconds late to the crease and then calling the physio to slow the game further. 'Yes, a lot of people have been talking about it. So, let me just clear the air once and for all. The English batsmen on that day, they had 7 minutes of play left. They were 90 seconds late to come to the crease. Not 10, not 20, 90 seconds late. Yes, most of the teams, they use this,' Gill said. 'Even if we were in a position, we would have also liked to play fewer overs. But there is a manner to do it. And we felt, yes, if you get hit on your body, the physios are allowed to come on. And that is something that is fair. But to be able to come 90 seconds late on the crease is something that is not in the spirit of the game,' he added. 'Just leading up to that event, a lot of things that we thought should not have happened, it had happened. And it's not, I wouldn't say it was something that I am very proud of. But there was a lead up and build up to that. It didn't just come out of nowhere,' he said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD He further explained the mindset in such tense moments. 'We had no intention of doing that whatsoever. But you are playing a game, you are playing to win and there are a lot of emotions involved. And when you see there are things happening that should not happen, sometimes the emotions come out of nowhere.' Shubman Gill also gave an update on the Indian team combination for the must-win fourth Test at Old Trafford, Manchester. 'Akash Deep is unavailable, so is Arshdeep, but we have good players in the team to pick twenty wickets. It is not ideal to have different bowlers but I was prepared,' he said. On the possibility of a debut for young pacer Anshul Kamboj, Gill said the decision will be made on the morning of the match. 'He is very close to making his debut. We will see between Prasidh and Anshul tomorrow,' Gill confirmed. Gill accuses England of not playing in the ‘spirit of the game'
India captain Shubman Gill accused England of not playing in the 'spirit of the game' after the home team openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley walked out late on the third evening of the third Test at Lord's. According to Gill, with just seven minutes remaining before the stumps were drawn, the England openers were 90 seconds late. As a result, India could only bowl one over and tensions flared between the two teams. 'The English batsmen on that day had seven minutes of play left. They were 90 seconds late to come to the crease. Not 10, not 20, but 90 seconds late. Yes, most of the teams use this (tactics). Even if we were in a position, we would have also liked to play lesser overs, but there is a manner to do it,' Gill said on the eve of the fourth Test. 'We felt, yes, if you get hit on your body, the physios are allowed to come on. That is something that is fair. But to come 90 seconds late to the crease is not something that is in the spirit of the game. And just leading up to that event, a lot of things that we thought should not have happened, had happened,' Gill said. As Crawley slowed things down, Gill got into an animated conversation.'It was not something that I am very proud of. But there was a build-up to that. We had no intention of doing that whatsoever. But you are playing a game, you are playing to win and there are a lot of emotions involved. And when you see things that should not happen happening, sometimes the emotions come out of nowhere,' Gill added.

India vs England 4th Test Manchester Weather and Pitch Report: Will rain play spoilsport at Old Trafford
India vs England (IND vs ENG) 4th Test Cricket Stadium Pitch Report and Manchester Weather Forecast: The Old Trafford Test is a do-or-die fixture for India in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. With England eking out a win in the thrilling Lord's Test, India are trailing 1-2 and a defeat in the fourth Test could seal a loss for them in the five-match series. India have ended up with a slightly worrying list of injuries and knocks over the course of the series. Workload management for Jasprit Bumrah ahs always been a concern. All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, who played crucials roles in the second and third Tests, has been ruled out for the rest of the series. There was a question mark over Rishabh Pant's ability to keep wickets after he couldn't do so for much of the third Test due to an injury he sustained early on. There were doubts on Akash Deep as well. It would've hence been quite frustrating for India to not be able to train due to rain in Manchester and the weather could end up having a say in how this Test goes as well. The Indian team arrived in Manchester with the city drenched by persistent showers. It has been raining regularly for the past week or so and there is forecast for light showers for the majority of the five days. There is a high possibility of rain on the opening day of the Test on Wednesday with precipitation at 65% and the temperatures will be between 19 to 14 degrees Celsius. As per the prediction, we can expect rain delays during the match that will start at 11 AM local time. Probability of rain only increases on Day 2 with precipitation forecast to rise to 85% and temperatures are projected to be between 21 to 12 degrees Celsius. The forecast is much better for the third and fourth days and there is a 40% chance of precipitation on Day 5, which means a few rain interruptions but with space for action. Considering the damp weather, there would be moisture to exploit for the fast bowlers on day one. The overcast conditions would also be useful for the pacers. The Old Trafford pitch generally tends to remain dry with former England players like Mike Atherton saying that the wrist-spin of Kuldeep Yadav could come handy. However, the humid conditions could prompt Gautam Gambhir and Shubman Gill to weigh bringing back Shardul Thakur as a pace-bowling all-rounder replacement for Nitish Kumar Reddy.
