A police officer was seen assaulting a CPI(M) leader at Buniadpur in Dakshin Dinajpur district.
'We are protesting against the policies of the Narendra Modi government. Why is Mamata Banerjee trying to foil the bandh,' the CPI(M) leader said. While the trade unions of Left parties and Congress have supported the strike, the Indian National Trinamool Trade Union (INTTUC) have opposed the Bharat Bandh.
'We firmly believe that strike is no solution and does not serve any purpose as far as the working people are concerned. We are completely opposed to any form of strike or slow down. Wasting Mandays is completely against the principle of ours,' INTTUC president Ritabrata Banerjee has said.
Ever since coming to power in 2011, the Trinamool Congress that had championed the cause of strikes while in Opposition have opposed bandh citing loss of man days and harassment to working classes. The West Bengal government has directed all its employees to attend office on Wednesday (July 9). In a notification issued by transport secretary Saumitra Mohan, the State govt has urged all public and private transport operators, including state transport undertakings (STUs), to operate normal services on that day.

Karnal firm directors jailed for ₹68-crore fraud
The court of CBI special judicial magistrate Anil Kumar Yadav has convicted the directors of M/s Shakti Basmati Rice Pvt Ltd, Karnal, in ₹68.41-crore bank fraud case, sentencing them to imprisonment for 1.5 years to 2.5 years. The court found the firm guilty under Sections 420 (cheating) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and also directed it to pay a fine of ₹15,000 under each section, amounting to ₹30,000. An investigation revealed the accused infused share capital by diverting bank funds and siphoned off loan funds into other accounts. Registered by the CBI's special task branch, New Delhi, the case stemmed from a complaint filed by Bharat Bhushan Kakkar, then SBI's deputy general manager, in March 2020. Company directors Parveen Kumar and Suresh Kumar, along with Brij Mohan and Saroj Bala, were convicted under Sections 120-B, 420, 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) and 471 (using as genuine a forged document). Parveen, Suresh and Brij Mohan received a sentence of two-and-a-half year jail, coupled with fines of ₹15,000 each for Sections 120-B and 420, and ₹10,000 for Section 471. Saroj Bala, an elderly woman, was sentenced to one-and-a-half year imprisonment and a similar fine. Chartered accountant Nagesh Kumar was also held guilty under Sections 120-B, 420 and 471, receiving a two-year imprisonment sentence and fine of ₹15,000 each for Sections 120-B and 420. Sham Lal, one of the accused, died during the trial so proceedings against him were dropped. During the hearing on quantum of sentence, the CBI counsel emphasised the substantial loss of ₹68.41 crore to the complainant (SBI). He highlighted how the accused projected a false 'rosy picture' of the company, using inflated figures in audited balance sheets and under-reporting sundry creditors to secure loans without actual goods movement. The investigation revealed the accused infused share capital by diverting bank funds, disposed of hypothecated stock without bank approval, and siphoned off loan funds into other accounts, causing a wrongful loss of ₹56.32 crore. Furthermore, the company diverted ₹24.86 crore to seven Delhi-based shell firms without actual business transactions. M/s Shakti Basmati Rice Pvt Ltd initially received credit facilities of ₹15 crore in 2009, which were subsequently increased to ₹68.41 crore by 2015 based on forged balance sheets and misrepresented facts, ultimately leading to the fraud.

'Operation Mahadev': Special plane flew guns overnight to CFSL, Chandigarh, for confirmatory ballistic tests
NEW DELHI: It was possibly the smallest cargo that a special plane, requisitioned at short notice, may have carried, but it ended up solving one of the most crucial terror investigations of the time. After three terrorists were killed in 'Operation Mahadev' on Monday, the security establishment did not stop at simply getting them identified by family members of the two locals who had provided them food and shelter at their seasonal 'dhok (hut)' near Baisaran, a day before the Pahalgam attack. Amit Shah directed the adoption of a more scientific route - a ballistic test at the Central Forensic Science Laboratory, Chandigarh, to match the weapons recovered from the slain terrorists with the cartridge casings recovered from the Pahalgam attack site. The latter had been tested earlier at the same lab. The weapons - an M-4 carbine and two AK-47s - were flown from Srinagar to Chandigarh on the special plane on Monday-Tuesday night. Forensic/ballistic experts at CFSL burnt the midnight oil, conducting test firings and generating empty shells for comparison. "The grooves and the markings from the barrels and shells matched perfectly... Six forensic experts confirmed to me on video call at 4.46am on Tuesday that these were the same rifles used in killing our innocent citizens (in Pahalgam)," Shah shared in Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
