Why Indian Bowlers Faltered? Irfan Pathan's Explanation: 'Executing The Length'

India lost the first Test against England at Headingley. Irfan Pathan emphasised Indian bowlers must adjust lengths based on batsmen for success in SENA countries.
The Indian men's cricket team did not manage to take all 20 wickets in the first Test of the five-match series for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England at Headingley, Leeds.
India ended up on the losing side as England batters completed a historic chase to go up 1-0 in the series.
In the first innings, Jasprit Bumrah took five wickets as Mohammed Siraj got two and Prasidh Krishna claimed three. In the second innings, Bumrah and Siraj remained wicketless as Prasish and Shardul Thakur scalped two each.
Ahead of the second Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham, which starts on Wednesday, July 2, Irfan Pathan opened up on the nuances of pace bowling and looked at possibly why Indian bowlers faltered to take wickets.
'When it comes to bowling, they bowl well in patches. That is one thing. Executing the length according to the batsmen, which we lacked," Irfan said during an interaction facilitated by Sony Sports.
'What was the problem is bowling to Zach Crawley and bowling to Ben Duckett who are partners. They both have different reach," he explained.
'So, first of all, you need to have adjustment between right-hand, left-hand combination. Obviously, that's a line which you need to adjust as a bowler in a same over. Suppose if I'm bowling first ball to Zach Crawley, he will change the strike to Ben Duckett and in the second ball, Ben Duckett will come to the crease."
'The similar length which Zach Crawley plays on the front foot, exactly the same length Ben Duckett is cutting. So, adjusting the particular length is very very important and that's the key for all our success in the history when you go to SENA countries because the pitches are true. You need to actually bowl that right length," he added.
Irfan said that bowling the right length has to vary depending on the batter at the crease and that it what the Indian bowlers could not do and hopes that can be improved upon.
'But bowling the right length according to the batsmen which is very important which I think we lacked in the first game. Hopefully, we will come back stronger and adjust that. And I'm saying that if you look at his wagon wheel also, Ben Duckett plays square on the offside, square on the leg side, not so much in the weak," he said.
'But at the same time, Zach Crawley takes out the big front foot trying to cover that line and swing. So, adjusting the line and the length according to the batsmen and according to that particular pitch is very important which I think will be the key going ahead as well," Irfan added.

‘I'm a little baffled that Kuldeep Yadav wasn't picked': Sunil Gavaskar slams Indian team management over leg-spinner's exclusion

With Indian team management not picking up spinner Kuldeep Yadav for the second Test against England at Edgbaston, it meant that the 30-year-old spinner would miss a Test in England for the second successive time. The spinner was excluded from the playing XI with the Indian team management preferring all-rounder Washington Sundar as the second spinner in the team besides Ravindra Jadeja and former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has termed Yadav's exclusion as baffling. 'I'm a little baffled that Kuldeep wasn't picked, because on a pitch like this, where everybody says there's a little more turn.' Gavaskar said while commentating on Sony Sports. Shubman Gill led Indian team made three changes in the side, which played in the five-wicket loss against England in the first Test against England at Leeds. With Sai Sudarshan being dropped along with Shardul Thakur, the Indian team management also went with the decision to rest Jasprit Bumrah. Along with all-round Nitish Kumar Reddy, pacer Akash Deep and Sundar were included in the playing XI for the second Test. With five centuries coming from an Indian batsman in the opening Test at Leeds, Gavaskar shared India needed to strengthen the wicket-taking department. 'If your top-order batters are not giving you the runs you expect, then Washington at seven or Nitish Reddy at eight won't necessarily fix that, because those weren't the batters who failed you in the first Test. You scored 830 runs. You didn't score 380 in two innings — it was 830-plus. That's a lot of runs. So, where you needed strengthening was in the wicket-taking department, not so much in the batting,' Gavaskar added. Former England pacer Stuart Broad termed the decision to rest Jasprit Bumrah as a surprising decision. 'A week is a very good time off for a fast bowler. Bumrah's (Jasprit) omission does surprise me and what also surprised me was him saying before the series he will only play three of the five Tests. You keep those cards close to your chest and play each week as it comes. They will definitely want Bumrah at Lord's because of the movement you can get through the air, so can they risk him here?' Broad told Sky Sports during commentary.

"Cannot Pick And Choose": Ex-India Star Slams Jasprit Bumrah For Missing 2nd Test vs England

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has slammed ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah for missing the second Test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Pointing out Bumrah's absence, Pathan said that he could not "pick and choose" on which match to play in a bid to manage his workload. The Indian team decided to rest the right-arm pacer for the game, considering that it is a five-match Test series in England. Ahead of the tour, India's chief selector Ajit Agarkar had already mentioned that Bumrah would not play all the five matches. "If you are selected in the Indian team, you cannot pick and choose (which match to play) to manage your workload," Pathan said on Sony Sports. "There is no other bowler like him, he is world-class. But here, you are not missing the match because of injury but for workload management. "Now Akash Deep will take his place and be expected to do well as soon as he comes in - and maybe he does - but any bowler needs time to settle in. That continuity is needed." Right-arm pacer Akash Deep got included in India's playing XI for Edgbaston Test in place of Bumrah. India made two other changes as Washington Sundar and N itish Reddy were roped in for Sai Sudharsan and Shardul Thakur. Pathan further spoke on India's dependency on veteran pacers Bumrah and Mohammed Shami. The latter has not been selected for the ongoing tour of England. "This is why I have been saying that Indian cricket has to start thinking about playing without Bumrah and (Mohammed) Shami. They have to start planning for playing without them in Test cricket," said Pathan. "The main fast bowler of the lineup cannot play all five Tests overseas, so firstly, India don't have Bumrah's services throughout the series, and secondly, his replacement, a younger player, is only getting a chance to play when he doesn't. So he does not have stability. "This is the only overseas five-match series of the new World Test Championship cycle. This was the series in which Bumrah was needed most. If he had a niggle or an injury, I would understand. But just to manage his workload? Then I don't think this is coming to India's advantage," Pathan added.
