'Let Them Arrest Me': Shinde Sena Minister Defies Own Govt, Joins MNS Protest
Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Baburao Sarnaik criticised the police for their actions in halting the MNS-led rally
Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Baburao Sarnaik, a senior leader from Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena, on Tuesday distanced himself from his own government to join a protest led by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) in Thane's Mira Bhayandar. The demonstration was organised over the language row involving traders and Marathi-speaking locals.
Sarnaik criticised the police for their actions in halting the MNS-led rally, claiming there were no official instructions from the government to suppress a peaceful protest.
Speaking to the media in Thane, he said, 'The police action was completely unjustified. The government has not issued any instructions to suppress a peaceful march held in support of Marathi pride. The way police are detaining people it raises doubts that they are working on some party agenda."
Defying his own government, Sarnaik said he was ready to face arrest, stating, 'The Marathi Ekikaran Samiti and several other organizations had applied for the rally, but were denied permission. I am going—if the police dare, let them arrest me. I stand with those who are speaking up for Marathi asmita."

The rally was held following an incident in which a food stall owner was allegedly assaulted for not speaking Marathi. This triggered protests by the trader community, which in turn sparked a counter-protest from MNS and other pro-Marathi groups.
The MNS protest, supported by the Marathi Ekikaran Samiti and other local organisations, saw participation from hundreds of people, including workers and leaders from Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (SP). Protesters marched through the streets of Mira Bhayandar, raising slogans in support of Marathi identity.
However, the situation turned tense when Sarnaik arrived at the protest site. Instead of a warm welcome, he was heckled by angry MNS workers, who labelled him a 'traitor" and demanded he leave. As the crowd grew agitated, the minister was forced to exit the location.
Police had initially denied permission for the protest citing concerns over law and order. Despite this, MNS workers gathered in large numbers. Several of them, including Thane MNS chief Avinash Jadhav, were detained. Some were picked up before the protest began, while others were taken away as they addressed the media.
In some cases, women protesters were seen being taken away in police vans. A number of MNS activists were also held overnight or kept inside a banquet hall to prevent them from joining the protest.
Sarnaik has said he will raise the matter with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

‘No Choice…': Nishikant Dubey Says BJP Needs PM Modi In 2029 Polls
BJP's Nishikant Dubey sees PM Modi as the party's leader for 15-20 years, claiming BJP won't win 150 seats in 2029 without him. He also spoke on Thackeray brothers and Owaisi. BJP leader Nishikant Dubey has said that he considers Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the party's central leader for the next 15-20 years as the party won't be able to secure a good margin in the 2029 Lok Sabha polls if the latter won't be projected as the party's face. In a two-minute teaser of interview shared by ANI, the Godda MP expressed his views on varied issues and topics, ranging from his controversial remark on Thackeray brothers, Operation Bluestar and his 'love-hate" relationship with AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi. BJP Needs PM Modi In the interview with the news agency, the BJP MP said that he only sees Narendra Modi as the central leader for the next 15-20 years. He even claimed that if PM Modi won't be projected as the BJP's face, the saffron camp won't be able to win even 150 seats in the general elections. He said that BJP has no choice other than PM Modi to contest the 2029 Lok Sabha elections in his name. When asked about Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat's recent remarks suggesting that leaders should step aside at the age of 75, Dubey said that this does not apply to PM Modi as the party needs him to be in power rather than PM Modi requiring BJP. The BJP MP further said that a political party functions on the basis of personality cult. Remark on Thackerays The BJP MP also spilled the beans about his recent controversial remark on Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray over the ongoing language row in Maharashtra where he dared the 'bahut bade boss' to come out of the state and said, ' Tumko patak patak ke maarenge" (you will be thrashed badly, again and again). Dubey said he being a lawmaker, he won't take the law in his hands, but the people of whichever state the Thackeray brothers will visit, will thrash them. Dubey's comments came in response to Raj Thackeray's comment on the victory rally in Mumbai earlier this month, where he told his party workers to beat those who don't speak Marathi, but not to record videos of such incidents. Love-Hate Relationship With Owaisi Dubey also revealed about the relationship and bond he shares with his arch rival and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi. During the interview, he said that he shares a cheerful and friendly bond with Owaisi for a long time. Dubey said that Owaisi is a family friend of him for years. The two firebrand leaders from rival parties were part of a seven-member delegation, headed by BJP MP Baijayant Panda, that travelled to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Algeria as part of India's global outreach in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack and India's response, Operation Sindoor. Before the team-up, Owaisi had slammed Dubey for his remarks on the Supreme Court. Following the apex court's landmark ruling on Tamil Nadu, which effectively imposed a deadline for the President and governors to approve Bills passed twice by the legislature, Dubey had said, 'Parliament and State Assemblies should be shut," noting that the Supreme Court was overstepping its boundaries. Dubey began his political journey in 2009, and has won the Godda Lok Sabha constituency in every election since then. From the Supreme Court and former Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna to, his latest political row challenging the Thackerays—Dubey's diatribes have targeted all and sundry. Fadnavis & Uddhav meet a day after Maharashtra CM's ‘invite' to jump ship to Mahayuti
According to sources, Uddhav Thackeray gifted Fadnavis a book, titled 'Hindi chi sakti havi ch kashala? (Why should Hindi be compulsory?)'. The Fadnavis-Thackeray meeting took place inside the chamber of Ram Shinde, the chairman of the state legislative council, who is known to be close to Fadnavis. Worli MLA Aaditya Thackeray also took part in the meeting. Mumbai: A day after Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, speaking in the state legislative council, made an offer to rival Uddhav Thackeray in a lighter vein to join his side, the two leaders had a meeting at Vidhan Bhavan Thursday. The leaders held talks over the post of the Leader of Opposition in the state legislative council against the backdrop of the tenure of the current LoP, MLC Ambadas Danve, expiring next month, sources said. LoP Danve is from the Shiv Sena (UBT). On Wednesday, speaking at LoP Danve's farewell in the council, Fadnavis joked there was no scope for Bharatiya Janata Party to sit in the Opposition till 2029 when the term of his government comes to an end, but that Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) 'can come this side'. The CM said, '[In] 2029, we have no scope of sitting in the Opposition. But Uddhav ji, you can shift to this side. This can be thought through.' Outside the Maharashtra assembly, Uddhav Thackeray dismissed the comment as 'banter', something that 'need not be taken seriously'. During the winter session of the state assembly last year, Thackeray had a meeting with Fadnavis, as well, at the Nagpur Vidhan Bhavan, supposedly to congratulate him for taking over as the new CM. The rising interaction between them comes at a time when a silent power tussle is underway between CM Fadnavis and his Deputy CM Eknath Shinde. From Jest To Jolt: What Fadnavis' 'Offer' To Uddhav Really Means
In politics, if something is said, even in a lighter vein, it is said with a purpose. That's why when Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis offered Uddhav Thackeray a chance to join the government during a speech in the Vidhan Parishad, it created a stir in the state's political circles. While Fadnavis may have spoken in jest, the remark has been interpreted differently in Maharashtra's political landscape. Political analysts are primarily asking two questions: first, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has a comfortable majority in the state assembly, so why does it need to bring Uddhav Thackeray on board? Second, if such a thing actually happens, what will be Eknath Shinde's position? Land Of The Absurd Events following the 2019 Maharashtra assembly elections show us that anything is possible in this state's politics. Enemies can become friends, and parties can split overnight. A Chief Minister's swearing-in ceremony can take place before sunrise. The Mahayuti government, spearheaded by the BJP, enjoys an overwhelming majority in the 288-seat Legislative Assembly. The BJP (132), along with the Shiv Sena (57) and the Nationalist Congress Party, or NCP (41), has 230 seats, far above the majority mark of 145. Despite this consolidated position, if the BJP is extending an invitation to an opposition party to join the government, it likely has two plausible motives: one, it intends to further weaken the opposition MVA alliance by poaching its biggest constituent. Two, it wants to replace one of its current alliance partners in the Mahayuti. If it's the second case, the obvious question is, whom does the BJP want to replace? Fadnavis shares a cordial relationship with Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, and both leaders are aligned on most issues. However, the same cannot be said about his equation with the other Deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde. Shinde And His Discontent Since the last Vidhan Sabha results, Shinde has reportedly been upset for various reasons. His first disappointment came when the BJP chose to make Fadnavis the Chief Minister instead of him. After assuming charge, Fadnavis overturned certain decisions taken by Shinde during his tenure as Chief Minister. Enquiries were also ordered into some contracts awarded under Shinde's leadership. Moreover, decisions such as the mandatory clearance of names by the Chief Minister's Office for the appointment of private secretaries by ministers have not gone down well with the Shinde Sena. Shinde's party is already in hot water due to a series of controversies involving its leaders. MLA Sanjay Gaikwad attracted bad press after punishing a canteen worker over stale food. A video showing Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) minister Sanjay Shirsat with a bag full of currency notes also caused embarrassment for Shinde. Such controversies are denting Fadnavis's efforts to deliver clean governance. Unease Grows Shinde is also in a difficult spot over the Hindi versus Marathi issue. While the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena and the MNS aggressively protested against a government circular mandating Hindi as the third language in primary schools, the Shinde Sena, being a part of the Mahayuti alliance, could not join the protest. Moreover, the education portfolio is held by a BJP minister. There is a growing feeling within Shinde's camp that not taking an anti-Hindi stand could cost them in the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. So far, Uddhav Thackeray's party has not taken Fadnavis's offer seriously. But if recent political history in Maharashtra is any indication, what is speculation today could very well become reality tomorrow.
