8-year-old Chiranjeevi sang a century-old devotional song to his 90-year-old father, Sharanabasawappa, who is on a ventilator. The viral video eased concerns over his health.
The Sharanabasaveshwar Samstan and Mahadasoha Peetha's 8-year-old successor, Chiranjeevi Doddappa Appa, sang a century-old devotional song, 'Appa Sharana Basavanna…' before his 90-year-old father, Sharanabasawappa Appa, who is on ventilator support. The viral video with lakhs of devotees sharing it as concerns grew over Peethadhipati's health.
According to Basavaraj Deshmukh, the peetha's secretary and brother-in-law of Sharanabasawappa Appa, the video was recorded last week during Sharanabasawappa Appa's hospital stay, as reported by The Times of India.
'Thousands of devotees were worried about Sharanabasawappa's health. However, this video reduced tension as Sharanabasawappa is seen in a relaxed mood. Another singing video of 'Kotigobba Sharana…', in which the senior pontiff is also seen clapping to the tune and remarking as 'very good', is also making rounds on social media," TOI quoted Basavaraj as saying.
Activist Laxman Dasti expressed concern over the senior Appa's health, citing age-related issues. He highlighted the junior pontiff's songs have gained immense popularity among devotees, who have saved them and even play them in temples locally.
'Almost all devotees have stored the songs sung by the junior pontiff, and they are even being played at temples in the region. Devotees are praying for the welfare of the senior pontiff," he added.
Activist Anil Allolli, in Dharwad, commented that it's a heart-touching video, wishing a speedy recovery for the senior pontiff. 'Many devotional songs on Kalaburagi Sharanabasaveshwar have been popular as bhajans and in other forms in north Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh," he added.
Sharanabasawappa Appa, the 8th pontiff, was succeeded by his son Chiranjeevi Doddappa Appa, who became the 9th Peethadhipati three years ago. It attracts about 5 lakh people during its annual fair that normally takes place in March every year. Apart from this, the peetha has been rendering yeoman service in education, agriculture, and the spiritual sectors in the north Karnataka region.
Lingarajappa Appa, nephew of Sharanabasavappa Appa, mentioned that Gulbarga University conducted a study which identified over 300 temples dedicated to Sharanabasaveshwar. He noted that the song was composed a century ago, and devotees sing it on all occasions of the Peetha.
Sharanabasawappa Appa had a son at 82 in November 2017, with his second wife, after previously having five daughters with his first wife, Matoshree Komaladevi, who passed away in 1993, and three daughters with his second wife, Matoshree Dakshayini Avvaji.

Abilympics participants share stories of resilience

Lucknow: When Budh Singh, a professional artist with a locomotor disability from Delhi, entered the competition floor of the North Zone Regional Abilympics and Conference 2025, he was not just there to win, but to represent a life of quiet resilience and extraordinary creativity. Teaching art to children with intellectual disabilities and working as a part-time tailor, Singh's story reflects the spirit of the Abilympics. "Art has always been my voice when words failed me. There were times when self-doubt, financial struggles, and lack of support made me question my path—but I held on to my brush like a lifeline. This platform makes me feel seen, valued, and inspired to do more. Today, I not only create art, I teach it—because if it helped me heal, maybe it can help someone else too," said Singh. He is not the only one. Participants like Nirlesh Pandey, a hearing-impaired BTech graduate from IIT Kanpur, and Mohammad Afzal Ansari, an MBA holder with a learning disability caused by the 2001 Bhuj earthquake, emphasised how the Abilympics gave them recognition and purpose. With the help of a translator, Nirlesh Pandey spoke to TOI, "I never let my hearing impairment define me. Being at the Abilympics connects me with people who share that same fire to overcome. " Mohammad Afzal Ansari, a participant in the desktop publishing category, shared, "That earthquake changed my body, but not my spirit." The two-day event that kicked off on Friday saw over 100 participants. It was inaugurated by Narendra Kumar Kashyap, minister for Backward Classes Welfare and Disabled Empowerment of Uttar Pradesh. Organised by the National Abilympic Association of India (NAAI) in collaboration with Sarthak Educational Trust, the participants competed in over a dozen categories including photography, painting & decorating, basket making, crochet, massage therapy, hairdressing, cake decoration, etc.

Rubina Dilaik Reveals Why Many Marriages Don't Survive Parenthood: 'Sabse Zyada Divorces…'

Last Updated: Rubina Dilaik, now a mother of twins, discussed how childbirth can stress marriages, often leading to divorce. She and husband Abhinav Shukla will appear on Pati Patni Aur Panga. Rubina Dilaik, who recently embraced motherhood by welcoming twin girls, didn't shy away from discussing the realities that follow childbirth — especially the toll it can take on a marriage. Statistically speaking, the actor revealed why many couples head for divorce after welcoming children. For the unversed, she, along with husband Abhinav Shukla, will be a part of a new reality show titled Pati Patni Aur Panga—Jodiyon Ka Reality Check. In a candid moment during a recent conversation, Rubina Dilaik opened up about how parenting can deeply impact a couple's relationship. She referenced studies that indicate the highest number of divorces occur post-childbirth, attributing this trend to the immense physical, emotional, and mental stress new parents go through. 'Sabse zyada divorces baccha paida honey ke baad hote hain because the couple goes through a lot of stress. Not just physical or emotional but mental stress as well. Jo couples survive kar gaya uss phase ko, they have a great relationship. This is a proper study ke maximum divorces baccha honey ke baad hota hain (Most divorces happen after a child is born because the couple goes through a lot of stress—not just physical or emotional, but mental stress as well. Couples who manage to survive that phase usually have a strong relationship. There's an actual study that shows the majority of divorces occur after having a child)." View this post on Instagram A post shared by F I L M Y G Y A N (@filmygyan) For the unversed, both Rubina and Abhinav, who got married in 2018, went through a rough patch in their marriage. During their stint on Bigg Boss 14, the Choti Bahu actor broke down on national television while making the big confession. She had also revealed that the couple was to take a final decision about their marriage after the show got over. The actor had also thanked Bigg Boss for giving their marriage another chance. Later, in an exclusive interview with The Times of India, Rubina shared, 'The kind of challenges we faced together in the show has made our relationship stronger. In the outside world, you have choices and you can escape, but when you are locked up in a house, you have no choice except to either fight or take flight. We chose to face the challenges head-on and win it for ourselves, and that in turn made us—our relationship and our bond—stronger." She further added, 'Having your life partner with you on a show like this definitely provides emotional support. But to be honest, having your personal life exposed on a public forum is like walking on eggshells. It was a mental and emotional challenge to balance things. Only couples can understand it." As for the latest update, both Rubina and Abhinav are going strong in their marriage. They became parents to twin girls, Jeeva and Edhaa, on November 27, 2023. view comments First Published: August 01, 2025, 18:08 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
