Health outreach campaign targets men and youth in Alexandra

Region E health and youth sector launched a mobile health outreach campaign at Kwabhekilanga Sports Ground on June 20.
It brought vital services like HIV testing and counselling, TB screening, family planning, and health education to the community. The campaign aimed to reach those least likely to set foot in a clinic, including young people, but despite the visibility and intent, attendance from the primary target was underwhelming.

'We expected a little bit more youth, but even though we did not see more of them, they did show up. Also, we just wanted the community around the area, especially children, because we know they are no longer going to school,' multisectoral co-ordinator in Region E Lerato Malemela shared.
Malemela reflected on the country's 'Close The Gap' campaign, which seeks to shrink the HIV treatment gap by bringing 1.1 million people into treatment. She said the outreach is part of Region E health's efforts to reduce that gap.
At the launch of the HIV treatment Gap campaign in Soweto on February 25, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi revealed that men remain behind in taking HIV/Aids treatment, noting that the gap is mostly comprised of men. Since then, the Father a Nation (FAN) organisation in Alexandra has been engaging with men and encouraging them to close the gap.
FAN member, the Stepping Tennis Foundation member, and co-organiser of the outreach campaign Sibusiso Shongwe said the campaign was intended to focus on that demographic of men. 'So, what we have seen at the FAN men's forum is that men are afraid to go to the health facilities. They are scared of queuing at the clinics. Here, there are no queues, they just walk in, receive services, and leave. That is why we decided that we should bring the clinic to them.'

There are several antiretroviral formulations proven to prevent HIV infection: a daily pill, two different jabs that offer protection for two and six months respectively, and a vaginal ring for women that has to be replaced monthly. In a few years, a long-acting pill may join the ranks, if it works. The pill, for now called MK-8527, has the potential to prevent HIV infection for up to a month in its current formulation. It is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase translocation inhibitor (NRTTI), which means it disrupts a specific step in the cycle by which the virus makes copies of itself. The pill is now moving onto pivotal phase-three trials, after promising results from a smaller phase-two study presented at the International Aids Society (IAS) conference held in Kigali, Rwanda. The phase-two study, conducted in trial sites in South Africa, the US and Israel showed that MK-8527 was well tolerated and had a safety profile similar to a placebo. It also showed the levels of the antiretroviral were at the required levels in the bodies of study participants, though the study was not designed to determine whether it is effective. Whether MK-8527 actually prevents HIV infection will now be tested in two large phase-three studies across multiple countries, including South Africa. In these studies, the efficacy of the monthly pill will be compared with a daily HIV prevention pill that is already widely available in South Africa's public sector. The daily pill contains the antiretroviral drugs tenofovir disaproxil fumarate and emtricitabine. Latest findings The phase-two study looked at three different doses of the monthly pill — 3mg, 6mg and 12mg — as well as a placebo. The 350 participants, about one third of which were from South Africa, were given one pill (either an active pill or placebo) every month for six months. They were monitored for at least two months afterwards. None of the participants acquired HIV during the study. The researchers enrolled adults who were at a low risk of being exposed to HIV and excluded pregnant and breastfeeding women, and people who had previously used MK-8527 or a similar antiretroviral drug called Islatravir, said Dr Kenneth Mayer, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, who presented the findings in Kigali earlier this month. The levels of the antiretroviral in the blood of all the participants were measured on day one and two, on the last day of taking the pill, and again at the first follow-up visit after stopping the pill. Based on these results, Mayer said there doesn't appear to be a build-up of drugs in the body that might prove toxic over time. This supports evaluating the use of a monthly pill over a longer period (than the six months in the study), he said, 'without concern that increasing drug levels will cause toxicity after a longer period of monthly administration'.

In the heart of Suurman, a small community in Hammanskraal, Change with Elevation (CWE), an NPO, is quietly transforming lives for the better. CWE provides free psychosocial support and mental health services to those in need, particularly survivors of gender-based violence (GBV). Born from personal pain and a deep desire to bring healing, the organisation was established in 2020 and formally registered on May 14, 2022. It was founded by Reneilwe Mokoe, a passionate young woman, mother, daughter, and sister with a diploma in Financial Management, who is currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. But beyond her academic journey, Mokoe is a changemaker whose life was reshaped by the trauma of GBV, an experience that propelled her to start CWE as a safe space for healing, support, and awareness. 'I realised that we cannot talk about change if we ignore the mental scars people walk around with every day. GBV was declared a pandemic in South Africa, and I felt a deep call to do something. 'Not just for myself, but for other women, men, and children who are silently suffering,' said Mokoe. CWE's mission is deeply rooted in healing and restoring communities through mental health activities and targeted social awareness campaigns. The organisation envisions a society that is not only informed about the effects and prevention of GBV but one that is actively engaged in breaking cycles of abuse and poverty. 'We want to build a community that is trained, aware, and empowered to take control of their lives. That begins with mental health,' emphasised Mokoe. At the core of CWE's services is free psychosocial support for victims of abuse, including trauma debriefing and mental health screening. Once a diagnosis or need is identified, it provides referrals for further professional help. Their holistic approach incorporates wellness activities, educational talks, and tailored action plans to help individuals navigate emotional and psychological distress. CWE also runs several community-based programmes focusing on social needs, capacity building, advocacy, and education. These include youth empowerment initiatives aimed at keeping young people in school, breaking the pattern of generational poverty, and educating them on GBV prevention. Through community engagement and collaboration, the organisation works closely with other service providers, local leaders, and families to build a stronger, more resilient society. What sets CWE apart is its grassroots approach. 'We don't believe in a one-size-fits-all solution. Each person, each story matters. We listen first, then support. 'The organisation thrives on innovation and inclusivity, often hosting group sessions, workshops, and campaigns that are open to all community members,' she said. While the journey has not been easy, Mokoe remains determined. 'I envision growth, success, and deep change, not just for Suurman, but for every surrounding community that needs healing. Minister of Health Dr Aaron Motsoaledi has stressed the urgent need for innovative solutions to combat tuberculosis (TB), a disease that has historically affected not only South Africa but countries around the world. 'We are here because we believe that TB – a disease that has shaped the history and health of our country and indeed, the whole world – can be ended. Not through words alone, but through action, partnership, and innovation,' he said on Thursday. The minister was delivering the keynote address at the country's TB Vaccine Preparedness Workshop in Johannesburg. The workshop aims to advance policy and decision-making for the introduction of TB vaccines. Protecting the most vulnerable Addressing policymakers, scientists and community leaders, Motsoaledi said the upcoming phase will introduce preventative TB vaccination measures, which will also support the fight against HIV and Aids. For over a century, South Africa has relied on the Bacille Calmette-Guérin vaccine to protect children from TB, but the minister pointed out that there has been no tool to protect adolescents and adults. 'These are the very groups most at risk of getting sick and transmitting TB,' he said. With several new TB vaccine candidates in the late stages of clinical trials, the most promising options are expected to be available in the next few years. The workshop positioned South Africa as one of the first countries ready to deliver a new generation of TB vaccines to the most vulnerable populations, including adolescents and adults. Ending 'slavery' of disease The minister expressed confidence that upcoming trials would yield positive results, potentially leading to a new vaccine for older age groups. TB remains a leading cause of death from infectious disease and a major contributor to poor health both locally and globally. 'Imagine the day when we announce the availability of the vaccine for tuberculosis,' he said, likening it to 'the day of true freedom from slavery' for those affected. Motsoaledi described the disease as a form of 'devastating slavery' that fuels poverty and premature death. 'South Africa is not waiting for the world to act. We are preparing – intentionally, early and inclusively.' Commitment to readiness The minister used the country's first national gathering on TB vaccine readiness to reaffirm South Africa's leadership in the global fight against TB and HIV. 'When South Africa wins against TB and HIV and Aids the world will win the war,' he said. He noted that throughout his tenure, he has sought to elevate TB on the global health agenda, recalling his 2018 address at the United Nations calling for world leaders to act. 'While global attention has often turned to emerging health threats, South Africa has remained focused on the enduring challenge of TB,' he said. He also acknowledged the devastating impact of TB on communities already battling HIV. Systems, trust and investment 'Today's discussions remind us that vaccine introduction is not just about science – it is about health systems. It is about trust. It is about readiness.' Motsoaledi emphasised the importance of preparing the health sector for the rollout, saying the agenda highlighted key areas such as evidence generation, delivery systems, and supply chain readiness. 'Investment in human life means everything,' he said, calling for strong financial backing and stakeholder support. He urged participants to build community trust and advocate for broad acceptance of the new vaccine.
