Australia delivers Abrams tanks to Ukraine for war with Russia
Australia, one of the largest non-NATO contributors to Ukraine, has been supplying aid, ammunition and defence equipment since Moscow invaded its neighbour in February 2022.
Ukraine has taken possession of most of the 49 tanks given by Australia, and the rest will be delivered in coming months, said Defence Minister Richard Marles.
'The M1A1 Abrams tanks will make a significant contribution to Ukraine's ongoing fight against Russia's illegal and immoral invasion,' Marles said in a statement.
Russia hands Ukraine bodies of 1,000 soldiers
The tanks formed part of the A$1.5 billion ($980 million) that Canberra has provided Ukraine in the conflict, the government said.
Australia has also banned exports of alumina and aluminium ores, including bauxite, to Russia, and has sanctioned about 1,000 Russian individuals and entities.
Australia's centre-left Labor government this year labeled Russia as the aggressor in the conflict and called for the war to be resolved on Kyiv's terms.

Russian rouble slides to more than six-week low after central bank rate cut
The Russian rouble weakened beyond the 80 mark to the dollar for the first time in more than six weeks on Monday as the market reacted to the Bank of Russia cutting interest rates by 200 basis points to 18% late last week. Friday's rate move was the biggest cut in borrowing costs since May 2022, with the central bank hoping to revive lending and boost flagging economic growth after stubbornly high inflation showed signs of easing. The rouble was down 0.6% as of 1057 GMT at 79.90 per U.S. dollar, according to data compiled by LSEG based on over-the-counter quotes. The rouble hit a low of 80.60 earlier in the session, its weakest point since June 12. 'It is obvious that the factor of rouble support in the form of tight monetary policy will gradually start to decrease its influence on the national currency,' Maxim Timoshenko from Russian Standard Bank. Against the Chinese yuan, the most traded foreign currency in Russia, the rouble weakened by 0.7% to 11.13. Brent crude oil, a global benchmark for Russia's main export, was up 1.1% at $69.17 a barrel.

Russia's night attack on Kyiv leaves eight injured, including child, Ukraine says
KYIV: A Russian overnight air attack on Kyiv wounded eight residents of an apartment building, including a three-year-old child, authorities in the Ukrainian capital said on Monday. Four of those injured in the attack, which took place soon after midnight on Monday, have been hospitalised, with one person in serious condition, the head of Kyiv's military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, said on the Telegram messaging app. Kyiv's Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that all of the people were residents of a multi-storey apartment building in the city's Darnytskyi district on the left bank of the Dnipro River. 'The blast wave damaged windows from the 6th to the 11th floor,' Klitschko said in a post on Telegram. The capital and most of Ukraine were under air raid alerts for several hours overnight following Ukrainian Air Force warnings of Russian missile and drone attacks. With the threat of missile strikes on western parts of Ukraine that border Poland - a NATO member - Polish armed forces scrambled aircraft to ensure the safety of Polish airspace. The central Ukrainian city of Kropyvnytskyi came under an attack, regional Governor Andriy Raikovych said, adding that emergency services were working on the site and information about potential damage will be released later on Monday. The full scale of the Russian attack on Ukraine was not immediately known. Reuters' witnesses heard loud blasts shaking the city of Kyiv overnight in what sounded like air defence units in operation. There was no comment from Russia on the attack. Both sides deny targeting civilians in their strikes in the war that Russia started in February 2022. But thousands of civilians have died in the conflict, the vast majority of them Ukrainian.
