US Open announces radical mixed doubles change as event targets top singles players

Independent11-02-2025
The US Open has announced a radical overhaul of its mixed doubles event – with the competition moving to two days in qualifying week in an attempt to attract top singles players.
The mixed doubles will take place between 16 pairs, halving the number of entrants from last year's event, and will be staged on the two biggest courts, Arthur Ashe and Louis Armstrong, over Tuesday 19 August and Wednesday 20 August.
It means that the mixed doubles champions will be decided before even the draw for the singles events are confirmed.
The scoring system, until the final, will be sets played to four games with sudden death deuce and a tiebreak at 4-4, with a 10-point tiebreak instead of the third set. The final will be the same but with normal six-game sets.
Most controversially for tour doubles players, eight pairs will earn entry based on their combined singles ranking with the other eight pairs decided by the US Open's wildcard committee.
Top American singles players Jessica Pegula and Taylor Fritz have already committed to the event. Six-time Grand Slam doubles champion Rajeev Ram criticised the entry process, with the world's best doubles players likely to miss out on playing mixed doubles in favour of top singles players.
The prize money for the winning pair will also rise to $1m, an increase of $800,000 from 2024.
'This is something we're really excited about,' Lew Sherr, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) chief executive, told The Athletic.
'I'm hopeful this becomes a new franchise and tentpole in tennis, not just at the U.S. Open, but elsewhere and throughout the year to attract more folks.
'It truly is something unique in sport where you have the best athletes, male and female, competing on the same field of play at the same time against one another. It doesn't exist in other professional sports.
'This is not an exhibition. This is a Grand Slam championship with significant prize money at stake. And we think it is unique and singular in sports. Our broadcasters all feel the same way.'
Sherr added that the success of an exhibition 'Mixed Madness' event in the build-up to last year's US Open, which was won by Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas, encouraged executives to make the radical move.
'From every reaction that we received, including broadcasters, players, it was unequivocally a success,' he added.
'That emboldened us to go further, which is where we are today.'
The semifinals and final will air on ESPN2 in the US, while matches will be made available to Sky Sports and therefore viewers in the UK.
The announcement comes a few weeks after the Grand Slam held in New York confirmed a Sunday start date, extending the tournament to 15 days in line with the Australian Open and French Open. Wimbledon, however, will not be following suit, as confirmed by Tim Henman.

Rangers fans beg owners the 49ers ‘to get on the phone tomorrow' as they pile praise on star man

As it stands, he WON'T be a Rangers player next season DO A DJIG Rangers fans beg owners the 49ers 'to get on the phone tomorrow' as they pile praise on star man THE saying goes that football fans should never fall in love with a loan player. Unfortunately for Rangers fans, it looks like it's happening yet again. Advertisement 4 Nasser Djiga in action for Rangers Credit: Willie Vass 4 Rangers fans are urging owner Andrew Cavenagh to sort a deal for Djiga Credit: Willie Vass 4 Vaclav Cerny starred on loan last season but Rangers haven't brought him back Credit: Willie Vass The Light Blues have had their fair share of successful loans in recent seasons. There was Vaclav Cerny last season, Abdallah Sima the year before and Malik Tillman the season before that. All three of those players enjoyed standout campaigns at Ibrox. But the other thing they all have in common as that NONE of them ended up back at Rangers permanently. Advertisement With a huge squad overhaul in progress under new boss Russell Martin, the Gers have unsurprisingly been dipping their toes back into the loan market this summer. Three of the nine new players signed have arrived on season-long loan. One of those is Nasser Djiga. And four games into his Gers career, it's fair to say he's already making an impact. Advertisement The towering 6ft4in central defender is at Ibrox this year on loan from Wolves - a deal that includes NO option to buy. That's perhaps little surprise given the fact Djiga only joined the English Premier League club for £10million in January this year and has the guts of five years still left to run on his contract. Billy Dodds on returning to Rangers under Barry Ferguson, defeating Mourinho & ending Celtic Park hoodoo The 22-year old has started all four games for the Gers so far this season and seems to be getting better with every one. He was one of the star man last night as Rangers eased past Viktoria Plzen in Champions League qualifying. Advertisement A Djeidi Gassama double and Cyriel Dessers penalty saw the Gers win 3-0 in the first leg of their third round tie. It was undoubtedly the team's best showing under Martin so far and Djiga was at the heart of it. He was labelled a 'Rolls Royce' by Andy Halliday on TV coverage - and the supporters have seen it exactly the same way. Many Gers fans took to social media to heap praise on their new central defender. Advertisement One said: "Let's enjoy big Djiga while he is here, he is a Rolls Royce of a defender." A second added: "Big Djiga, what a player! Rolls Royce." A third posted: "Djiga was unreal. Mopped up everything." While a fourth commented: "Djiga looks a player. You can see his quality. One to enjoy and appreciate while he's here." Advertisement Many other fans urged Rangers' new American owners to try and get a permanent deal done for the Burkina Faso international NOW. One ambitious fan said: "I'd be putting in a bid of £20million for the boy Djiga now. No questions asked." 4 Another said: "The 49ers should be on the phone tomorrow getting a price in place for Djiga." Advertisement A third came up with a novel way of helping get a deal done, quipping: "Hear me out, we all set up a direct debit for a tenner a week and buy Nasser Djiga at the end of the season." The praise continued, with another saying: "As upgrades go has there ever been a bigger one than Djiga for Propper?" Summing up a lot of the general feeling, another Gers fan said: "I forgot Djiga is on loan and I'm afraid I've started to fall in love." Have YOU got a point for Kris Boyd? Osaka sails into Canadian Open semis, Shelton knocks out De Minaur

Aug 5 (Reuters) - Four-times Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka reached the semi-finals of the Canadian Open for the first time after beating Ukrainian Elina Svitolina 6-2 6-2 in the quarters on Tuesday, while Ben Shelton eliminated Alex de Minaur on the men's side. It marks Osaka's first WTA 1000 semi-final since Miami in 2022, as the Japanese former world number one needed just over an hour to secure victory over the 10th seeded Svitolina. Osaka capitalised on Svitolina's unforced errors to break twice and move within a game of taking the first set. Despite dropping serve while Svitolina threatened to shift the momentum, Osaka held her nerve, broke back and closed out the opener. The second set was more closely contested, but Osaka converted two more break points to seal the win in Montreal. The 27-year-old will next face Danish 16th seed Clara Tauson, who secured her second consecutive win over a top 10 opponent by defeating American sixth seed Madison Keys 6-1 6-4 to reach the semis having previously beaten six-times major winner Iga Swiatek. "I think for me, I'm just having a lot of fun playing and I'm really glad to be here," Osaka said. "She's (Tauson) really tough. I played her in Auckland this year and I had to stop halfway because I was injured. So, I'm really excited that I'm healthy and I hope that it's a good match for everyone that comes and watches." Tauson was clinical in the opening set against Keys, converting both of her break point opportunities and serving it out in just over half an hour. Australian Open champion Keys dropped serve again early in the second, leaving the 22-year-old Tauson on course for just the second WTA 1000 semi of her career. In the men's tournament in Toronto, American second seed Taylor Fritz advanced to the semis with a 6-3 7-6(4) victory over Russian sixth seed Andrey Rublev. Wimbledon semi-finalist Fritz got off to a blistering start, winning six straight points and breaking his opponent's serve in his first return game. The 27-year-old maintained his momentum behind a dominant service performance and appeared poised to close out the match while serving at 5-4 in the second set. Rublev, however, mounted a comeback, saving a match point and converting his fourth break point to level the set before forcing a tiebreak, where Fritz finally secured the win. "That whole game was so shaky for me," Fritz said. "It's weird because he was holding easy, I was holding easy. It felt so like calm and chill and all of a sudden I'm serving to be in the semis, the pressure of the game came out of nowhere. "There's no way to sugarcoat it, it was a tight game. My brain kind of turned off. The only thing you can do is come back and win the set. I would be a lot more upset about what happened in the game if I lose the match. Winning makes it feel not as bad." Next up for Fritz is compatriot and fourth seed Shelton, who beat Australian ninth seed De Minaur 6-3 6-4 to reach his first career Masters 1000 semi-final.

Music headliner Odesza will pump up the post-tennis party at this year's US Open

The U.S. Open already delivers plenty of drama on the court, but this year's Finals weekend is getting a whole new level of after-dark energy. On Saturday, September 6, Grammy-nominated electronic duo Odesza will take over Louis Armstrong Stadium for a DJ set at the tournament's second annual U.S. Open Finals Afterparty, a high-octane cap to the Women's Singles Final earlier that evening. If you've ever wanted to swap polite applause for bass drops at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, here's your shot. Odesza—a.k.a. Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight—are fresh off a record-breaking run that's seen them headline Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and Outside Lands; sell out three nights at Madison Square Garden; and pack 44,000 fans into Colorado's Folsom Field in just 24 hours. For the Afterparty, they'll be joined by fellow Grammy nominee TOKiMONSTA, whose genre-bending sets and fearless experimentation have made her one of electronic music's most boundary-pushing artists. The show kicks off at 9pm inside Armstrong and requires a separate ticket from the day's tennis. Presales for U.S. Open and artist fans drop Thursday, August 7, at 10am EST, with public sales following on Friday, August 8, at 10am EST via Ticketmaster. The Finals Afterparty is part of U.S. Open Finals Fan Fest (Sept. 6–7), a free-with-grounds-pass celebration that turns the entire tennis center into a social club. Expect elevated watch parties, DJs, special guests and live feeds of celebrity arrivals—both in Armstrong and on the Fountain Plaza. The whole weekend is designed to make the championship rounds feel less like a polite wrap-up and more like a citywide event. The 2025 U.S. Open itself kicks off August 18 with Fan Week, offering six days of free grounds admission, practice sessions, player meet-and-greets and the newly reimagined Mixed Doubles Championship. Main draw play begins August 24, leading into two weeks of tennis that build toward Finals weekend's electric blend of sport and spectacle. With Swedish House Mafia selling out nearby Arthur Ashe Stadium in minutes for a separate September 23 show, Odesza's Afterparty could prove just as hot a ticket. In other words, if you plan to swap your visor for a glow stick, you might want to set a ticket alarm now.
