
Ranking the best-looking cars on the 2025 F1 grid from worst to best
10. Ferrari SF-25
There have been several attractive Ferrari liveries in recent years, perhaps peaking in 2022. The SF-25, however, is not one of them. They have changed the shade of red again, but that is not a major problem. What is an issue is the increased prominence of the HP sponsorship, which ruins the aesthetics of this car.
White and blue front and rear wings I can just about live with, but the HP logo plastered behind the top airbox just ruins it. Four colours work well for Ferrari in my opinion and in this order: red, black, yellow and a very small amount of white. Blue should be nowhere near this one. In many ways it is a shame that this is how Hamilton's first Ferrari looks.
9. Williams FW47
Is the Duracell sponsorship on the airbox losing its novelty factor? I would say so. That this Williams is in ninth shows that many of these liveries are middling. The FW47 is not a bad-looking car as such, but it would be improved if the shade of blue on the nose matched the colour on the rest of the car. The white piping is a nice touch (more piping on F1 cars, please), though. A touch more red would not go amiss, either. A big part of me wants more white to replicate those mid-1990s Rothmans-sponsored Williams cars.
8. McLaren MCL39
I am always unsure whether the McLaren looks good or bad. It depends on the angle. Thankfully, developments in F1 have meant that fewer teams have so much exposed carbon fibre compared to a couple of years ago. McLaren are one of the teams who have kept a fair amount of black, though.
I always thought a deep blue (there is a touch of that in places but not enough) was a good compliment to the classic 'papaya' shade of orange. It worked well in 2018, though that car was dreadfully slow. McLaren will not care what their car looks like if they can manage to win both championships this year.
7. Aston Martin AMR25
The shade of green looks a little lighter in 2025 and that is welcome. There is not much more to say on this one, as it is very much the same as last year's livery. I am struggling to spot anything significant that has changed, in fact. Minimal points for effort but at least the car has some identity in its aesthetic.
6. Red Bull RB21
We all now know what a Red Bull F1 car is going to look like. A few years ago I yearned for them to try something a little different, just for once. Now I think that would be a mistake. It is not exciting – would a yellow or red halo kill them? – but this works and takes its place firmly in F1's aesthetic midfield.
5. Sauber C45
This 2025 Sauber has attracted some criticism from observers and for reasons I cannot understand. Last year's version topped our list but partly because the novelty of a bright green and black livery was striking and uncommon. This is largely an evolution, with a bit more green.
I suppose some of the criticism came because it is unadventurous. Just two colours and no real daring touches or anything remotely ambitious has been attempted. The green just fades into the black behind the driver. Still, it is at least different from the rest of the grid.
4. Haas VF-25
The Haas liveries have ranged fairly wildly in their decade or so in F1. Thankfully they have ditched the predominant grey of their early years. 2025's model is very much a variation on last year's red, white and black one but with more white than black this time. It's hard to get too enthusiastic about it but that is the case for almost all of the 2025 cars. Quite low effort, and that is probably to be expected with the final year of these regulations. Let's hope for some changes across the grid in 2026.
3. Mercedes W16
Very much a continuation of last year's car, the team have stuck with the silver/black hybrid after alternating between those two colours for a few years, with the usual licks of Petronas green. I ranked 2024's W15 in fourth, so this is only a minor upgrade. The red and the Ineos branding on the driver's airbox has gone, to be replaced by more silver. I think the beauty of this car largely depends on the angle you view it from. Its best angle is definitely from the front.
2. Alpine A525
Almost top place for trying something different from last year. In the wave of 'naked' F1 cars Alpine were the worst offenders, largely because their car was massively overweight. Thankfully they have mostly stopped that now, with the main areas of exposed carbon fibre being on top of the sidepods. And we do not often see them, so that works well enough.
They could have perhaps leant into the BWT pink a little more, but from front on this is reminiscent of the Force Indias of seven or eight years ago, with just a dash of Alpine blue here and there. The pink halo works, too.
1. Racing Bulls VCARB 02
This gets top spot partly almost entirely because it is so different from the previous livery and also because it is different from the rest of the grid. There are slight Lola Mastercard vibes to the VCARB 02. It also feels like a slight variation on the Honda-inspired livery Red Bull ran for the 2021 Turkish Grand Prix.
Simplicity is a plus in any F1 livery and you cannot get much more simple than white – and there is a lot of it here. The colour scheme on the nose, airbox and rear wing make it very clear that this is the Red Bull sister team, after years of their livery rather playing down that link. A sort of 'away kit' if you will and one that is better than the 'home' strip.

F1 Hungarian Grand Prix, FP3: latest practice updates and lap times
Welcome to our live coverage for final practice for the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix, with qualifying coming a little later in the day. This is the final race before the summer break and a last chance for drivers to end the first part of the season on a good note. At this stage it very much looks like a two-horse race for the 2025 drivers' championship. The McLaren is quite frankly miles ahead of any other car at the moment and even further ahead than it was at the start of the season. As it stands it will either be Oscar Piastri or Lando Norris who will take home the championship, their first in F1. Piastri is the leading man after being a little bit more consistent and a little bit quicker over the first 13 rounds. Not by much – as is reflected by a fairly narrow 16-point lead – but by just enough. He has won six races to Norris's four. Both men have made small mistakes at times and are driving well. Max Verstappen is too far away to realistically consider him a title contender, as well as he has been driving. Of course it was here last year that the Australian took his first win in F1, though it was not without controversy, with a lengthy team orders back and forth between both drivers and their race engineers. It soured his maiden victory a little. Will we see a repeat of that this year? He bounced back well in Spa with a race win from second on the grid last week, ending Norris' min-run of race victories. It certainly looked like it will be one of the two McLarens winning the race after yesterday's running. We will, though, perhaps discover a little more in final practice which is coming up.

Lewis Hamilton's U-turn on £1.6m supercar he made huge profit on before costly crash
Lewis Hamilton amassed an impressive supercar collection but ultimately sold his most expensive and unique vehicle due to growing concerns over its environmental impact Lewis Hamilton's 2025 Formula 1 season has been a mixed bag so far, with the seven-time world champion showing flashes of his old brilliance but struggling for consistency at Ferrari following his blockbuster move from Mercedes. Off the track, though, Hamilton remains a man of principle, known for his staunch commitment to environmentalism and social causes. It's this very ethos that led him to part ways with one of his most prized possessions - a custom Pagani Zonda 760 LH - only to see it smashed up by its new owner after he pocketed a massive profit. The one-of-a-kind supercar, which was built to Hamilton's exact specifications in 2014, was a beast of a machine. Powered by a monstrous 7.3-litre V12 engine pumping out 760 horsepower, it featured a striking purple livery with carbon fibre accents and a rare six-speed manual transmission - Hamilton's personal request, making it the first Zonda 760 to ditch the automatic. Costing him around £1.6million, the car was the jewel in his £12.5m supercar collection. But despite its jaw-dropping looks and sound, Hamilton wasn't entirely smitten, once slamming its handling as "terrible." By 2021, Hamilton's growing environmental consciousness, spurred by his efforts to reduce his carbon footprint, forced a tough call. Speaking at the 2020 Tuscan Grand Prix, he revealed he'd stopped driving his supercars, opting instead for his electric Mercedes EQC. "I'm making a lot of changes in my personal life," he said. "I don't drive any of the cars that I own any more. I only drive my [electric Mercedes] EQC." The Zonda, a gas-guzzling icon, no longer fit in with his green philosophy. So, he sold it. And he didn't do badly out of it either. The car fetched a staggering £8.5m, landing Hamilton a tidy £6.9m profit. Tragically, the Zonda's story took a grim turn in 2023 when its new, unnamed owner lost control in the Penmaenbach Tunnel in Conwy, Wales - crashing it into the wall. Photos shared online showed the car in a sorry state, with a smashed front clamshell, broken suspension, and damaged doors, windshield, and rear bumper, making for a costly repair job. Miraculously, the driver walked away unharmed, and no other vehicles were involved. The crash wasn't the Zonda's first brush with disaster either - Hamilton himself had pranged it in Monaco in 2015, blaming a fever and lack of sleep after clipping three stationary cars. Thankfully, the Zonda has since been lovingly restored to its former glory, being spotted leaving Pagani's factory for a pre-delivery test run last September. Its metallic purple paint and bare carbon centre are back, though the LED DRLs, once deemed out of place, have been ditched. One of just five Zonda 760s ever built, it's a testament to both Pagani's craftsmanship and Hamilton's knack for making savvy decisions, both on and off the track. The 40-year-old is yet to make the podium for Ferrari, with his best results being fourth-place finishes at Imola, Silverstone and the Austrian Grand Prix this year. He's currently sixth in the Drivers' Championship, trailing leader Oscar Piastri by over 150 points. He's also 30 points behind Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc and just once place ahead of Kimi Antonelli - the young driver who replaced him at Mercedes. Up next is the Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend, a race Hamilton has won a record eight times, though not since 2020.

People are only just realising why F1 points go 25, 18, 15 for top three drivers each race
Formula 1 scoring works slightly differently from other sports, with the first three drivers to cross the finish line at events receiving 25, 18, and 15 points respectively, something which may confuse new fans Formula 1's rules can be quite tricky for new fans to understand, especially if they're unfamiliar with motorsports in general. From memorising what each flag means to why drivers have to take two mandatory pit stops in most races, it can be an incredibly unfriendly sport for newbies to get to grips with. And then there's the incredibly unique scoring system, which has seen its fair share of changes over the years, as well as two separate standings in the Drivers' and Constructors' Championships. With the Hungarian Grand Prix fast approaching this Sunday, Mirror F1 breaks down how F1 scoring works in 2025... How does F1 Grand Prix scoring work? While each Grand Prix sees 20 drivers from 10 teams take to the grid, only the top 10 who cross the line first see points on the board for their efforts. The outright winner of the race is awarded 25 points, second place gets 18 points and third takes 15, with the rest of the top 10 receiving fewer points depending on their positioning. With regards to why the F1 settled on the 25, 18 and 15 system, it is reported that it was an intentional move to incentivise better performers among competitors. As a win is seven points more valuable than finishing second, the current set-up promotes aggressive racing and overtaking as opposed to simply settling and holding position. It also makes the sport more exciting from a fan perspective, as a win one week and a third-place finish at the next event could make or break a driver's positioning in the seasonal standings and their race for the Drivers' Championship. Here's a breakdown of how drivers are awarded points for each Grand Prix: 1st place - 25 points 2nd place - 18 points 3rd place - 15 points 4th place - 12 points 5th place - 10 points 6th place - 8 points 7th place - 6 points 8th place - 4 points 9th place - 2 points 10th place - 1 point An extra point was previously awarded to the driver and team who managed the fastest lap, so long as they managed a top 10 finish, but this was ultimately removed for the 2025 season. An amended system for incomplete races The regular race system is used for all races deemed to be 75 per cent or more complete. The same applies to races resumed after a red flag stoppage and ending under green flag conditions for at least two racing laps. However, there's a reduced scoring system for races that finish prematurely. The points that drivers receive in this scenario depend on how long the race was active. For example, the winner of a race that lasted between two laps (25 per cent complete) receives just six points. Drivers get 13 points for races between 25 per cent and 50 per cent complete, and 19 points for races that are called off between 50 per cent and 75 per cent complete. How does F1 Sprint scoring work? In addition to the Grand Prix, there are also a number of Sprint events across the F1 season, but these are scored differently from the regular track-based events. For context, only the top eight drivers are rewarded for their placements in Sprint events, and the amount of points that they are awarded for their placement is considerably lower, for the most part, compared to Grand Prix. Here's a breakdown of how drivers are awarded points for each Sprint: 1st place - 8 points 2nd place - 7 points 3rd place - 6 points 4th place - 5 points 5th place - 4 points 6th place - 3 points 7th place - 2 points 8th place - 1 point Separate tables for drivers and constructors At the end of each season, the driver who has racked up the most points takes home the Drivers' Championship, while the team (made up of two drivers) with the most points overall wins the Constructors' Championship. It gives an extra edge to the sport, given that the driver of one team can win the individual title, but a completely different team can win the Constructors' trophy due to it being an aggregation of points. For example, Max Verstappen of Red Bull won last year's Drivers' Championship with 437 points from nine wins and 14 podiums, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Constructors' Championship going to McLaren. That's because Verstappen's Red Bull partner, Sergio Perez, finished the season with 152 points, putting Red Bull at a lowly third in the team standings with a total of 589 points. Meanwhile, McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, who finished second and fourth in the individual standings respectively, accumulated a combined total of 666 points. Ferrari, meanwhile, took the second place spot in the team standings thanks to Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz racking up 652 points.
