Two-year-old blue bloods to clash on debut at Sandown on Wednesday

News.com.au20-05-2025
Wednesday's Thoroughbred Club of Australia Handicap at Sandown could be a showdown between a pair of blue blood two-year-olds.
I'mateez, a half-brother to the former superstar sprinter Imperatriz will be up against Samudra, a daughter of Oakleigh Plate winners Snitzel and Pippie.
Bookmakers have the Mark Walker -trained Samudra as an odds-on favourite after three jumpout wins while I'mateez is a $17 chance after improving to win his latest jumpout at Cranbourne on May 12.
Walker's Melbourne representative Ben Gleeson said the stable had been careful with Samudra, who was a $775,000 yearling purchase.
'She's not an out-and-out two-year-old by any means,' Gleeson said.
'When people see her in the parade ring, they'll see she's a big, strong, scopey type of filly that is certainly going to grow.
'She's taken time to mature body-wise and every time she's had a jumpout, we've just given her that bit of extra time.
'We haven't wanted to push her until she showed us she's ready. But we've been really pleased with her jumpouts.'
I'mateez, a son of Golden Slipper winner Capitalist, cost $200,000 as a yearling on the Gold Coast last year.
The colt's trainer Alex Rae said the youngster had plenty of speed but needed to answer questions in the last 100m of the $50,000 contest.
'He certainly heads to the races with a good understanding of what his job is, but what happens when the real pressure goes on late in the race, I'm not sure how he's going to respond,' Rae said.
'He'll jump, he'll run and he's pretty one-dimensional so we're not going to do anything out of the ordinary with him.
'He'll probably lead them up and hopefully he'll be strong late, that's the big question.
'It's going to be a tricky race but I suppose, when you've got a horse with the pedigree that he has, I suppose there's some lofty ambitions internally.'

Promising mare primed to make immediate imprint at Wagga

Albury's premiership-winning trainer is out to start the new season with a bang by unveiling a promising four-year-old mare at Monday's Wagga meeting on the Riverside course. Impending Imprint is a first starter in the Donna Scott stable by Group 1 winner Impending and out of a mare by renowned wet-track performer Hinchinbrook. She opens her career after two improving trials, the latest a real eye-catcher when settling at the back over 900m at Albury on a soft 7 before cruising down the middle to win with something in hand. It was the work of a debutant primed to find the line in suitable going when she tackles a Maiden Plate over 1200m, with leading jockey Blaike McDougall in the saddle. Scott finished the 2024-25 season with a solid run, yielding three winners from her last 20 runners, significantly all on heavy ground. Meanwhile, fellow Albury trainer Ron Stubbs takes an even bigger team to Wagga on Monday after finishing the past season with three winners from his last 25. And he has two first starters – Lover Man, a four-year-old by Golden Slipper winner Vancouver, and McPhillamy, a three-year-old by Flying Artie – accepted to run against Impending Imprint. But it's later on the program where he will be banking on one of his more talented runners reproducing his best in a competitive and open Class 1 Handicap over 1065m. Ti Tree Royal, an often unreliable four-year-old son of Irish sire Royal Meeting, has only one win from five starts since debuting 10 months ago.

Brad Widdup is a Group 1 winner and a leading provincial trainer but he is still a country boy at heart and loves getting back to his roots when the right opportunities are there. The Albury raised Widdup heads wet with a trio of capable runners ready to shine, none more so than High Dandy in the Bankstown Sports Forbes Cup (1600m) which is also a Big Dance Qualifier. The John Camilleri-bred and owned gelding has improved with each run this campaign starting off with a seventh to Nana's Wish at Canterbury before a fourth to Walking Painting and a second to Glad You Think So both in Randwick Midways over 1600m. 'He has taken a while to get to his peak for one reason or another but his last two runs have been really good,' said Widdup. Jockey @G1TySchil wanted the front mid-race, he took it, and the promising High Dandy scores back-to-back wins for @BWiddupRacing ðŸ' â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) August 28, 2024 The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here! 'Hopefully he can continue on with that now. The son of Camilleri's own Group 1 winner Ace High looks well placed in the Cup being a 71 rater with 56kg, just a kilo above the minimum. Heading the weight for the race is Another One with 65kg although he comes down to 62kg after the claim. 'He gets in well at the weights which is not often the case when you take a horse out to the country,' Widdup said. 'He has good Sydney form and the fact he gets quite a bit of weight off those couple of well-performed, higher benchmark rated horses, I would like to think he will be very competitive. Widdup has gained the services of Hawkesbury-based jockey Chad Lever who has been on great form since returning to the saddle late last year. 'I was surprised that he is going out there but when we seen his name down for some rides, we were lucky to be able to get him,' Widdup said. Widdup and lever will also team up with lightly-raced mare Initiate in the Walker Family Showcase Super Maiden Handicap (1300m). The four-year-old is closing in on her first win after a close second to Divo and third to Capital Jicinta at Wyong before a last start fourth behind Denial at Kembla. Power Of The Brave leads all the way and is too good for the rest! ðŸ'¥ @Leesracing â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) March 15, 2025 'She is only a little filly but she tries very hard,' he said. 'She is probably still another preparation away from really being at her best but she is going well. 'Hopefully she can knock her maiden off this weekend. 'I don't think barrier eight is a bad draw for her. 'She's doesn't have real early toe so drawing there, hopefully she can slot in somewhere midfield or maybe a bit closer.' Widdup's final runner for the day is Party Doll in the Club Forbes Showcase Class 2 Handicap (1100m) who will be ridden by stable apprentice, Poppie Gorton. Gorton was having her first day riding at Bathurst two weeks ago when fourth on Party Doll. 'She drew awkward at Bathurst last start and was slow to begin before she took off around them,' said Widdup. 'She just did a lot of work but it was a good effort to finish where she did. 'She is better on top of the ground and is finding it hard to win a race but John (Camilleri, owner) has been good enough to give Poppie a couple of rides on her and her four kilo claim brings her into this race. 'Hopefully she can begin well and be in the race and I'm sure she will run really well if that's the case.' â– â– â– â– â– ADAM SHERRY'S TOP SELECTIONS BEST BET Race 3 No. 3: INITIATE Has strong provincial form and gets his chance to break through. Newcastle preview: Lady Talea's impressive improvement fuels trainer Jason Coyle's faith in the filly

Jason Coyle walked away more than happy with Lady Talea's second place at Newcastle last start and expects her to be more than competitive again when she returns this weekend. The three-year-old tracked the leader from her inside gate before peeling out on the turn and while she couldn't hold out the fast finishing Southern Heiress, she did put nearly three lengths on the rest of the field. It was a big improvement from Lady Talea who had finished down the order in the her first two starts in the Listed Lonhro Plate at Randwick in February and Two-Year-Old Handicap on the Kensington. 'I think we can put a line through her first two runs,' said Coyle. 'She probably shouldn't have gone to the Stakes on debut but she was in (work) at the right time and she was healthy so we gave her a go. SOUTHERN HEIRESS (2 f Snitzel - Savannah River) blitzes her rivals on debut at @newcastleraces_ for @MFreedmanRacing ðŸ'¥ @ArrowfieldStud The filly was a $280k buy for @JamesBester4 from @WestburyStud at the @mmsnippets Gold Coast Yearling Sale ðŸ'' 🎥 @racing_nsw â€' ANZ News (@anz_news) July 12, 2025 The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here! 'It was a learning experience for her then she went out. 'On the Kenso first-up this time, she had trialled so well and I think Andrew (Adkins) may have got trigger happy and set her alight from the start. 'She had nothing in the tank when asked to quicken and just got lost. 'I thought it was a positive step forward from her last start. From a good draw it all worked out well. 'She found one much better on the day but she had the rest of the field well and truly covered. The daughter of Anders returns to the Steel City in the Maiden Plate (900m) with Jess Taylor aboard. 'She has always shown that little bit of ability and I feel the family handle a wet surface,' Coyle said. 'I think the more times we can get her to the races and things go right, the better she will be.' Coyle was also thrilled by the debut run of Smart Cry at Hawkesbury on June 26 despite beating just one home behind Efharisto. After settling last, the daughter of Vino Rossa made up ground late in the 1000m event. 'She was super impressive. I really thought she was outstanding,' he said. 'I genuinely feel she is a seven furlong (1400m) to mile horse and her pedigree says even further. Chateaux Park slices through the field under a top class ride from @G1TySchil for the @jcoyleracing team! â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) August 9, 2023 'At this stage she is racing like a sprinter. I think 1200m would have been perfect the way she closed off.' The four-year-old gets her chance over the 1200m where she contests the Midway 4YO&Up Maiden Handicap where she has drawn out in gate 11. 'Being a heavy track, it may be okay sitting a touch wide at Newcastle and sliding home,' he said. 'If we go ahead, she is definitely going to improve of her first run.' Coyle expects stable stalwart Chateaux Park to run a much improved race second-up in the Benchmark 68 Handicap (1600m). The nine-year-old dwelt at the start and came out two lengths behind the field when last to Hooligan Tommy at Gosford two weeks ago. 'Mitchell (Bell) got off and said they couldn't have run the race any worse for him with a horse taking off mid-race,' said Coyle. 'Being first-up, trying to sustain a four furlong gallop had his cooked. He was done. 'It was a shame because he had trialled nicely leading into it. 'He probably would have finished closer if it was just a normal run mile. 'It will be a heavy track which he handles and he should improve out of sight second-up.' Coyle also expects Bluff 'N' Bluster and Catch The Glory to run well at Rosehill.
