Opinion: Jack Brennan was closeted as Bengals PR head. He's out now and has a lot to say
Jack Brennan was like a handful of powerful people in the NFL: He was a team PR person. In this case, for the Cincinnati Bengals. And as a PR person he was, in many ways, the front person for the team. If you wanted to talk to then coach Marvin Lewis one-on-one, you went through Brennan. Brennan was always professional, kind and did whatever he could to make your job easy. He was, in other words, a pro. He was also gay.
The latter fact almost no one knew. Brennan kept it a secret throughout his 23-year Bengals career which ended in 2017. Brennan's story remains one of the most fascinating in recent league history because while the NFL and media has (understandably) focused on players coming out, there have been few team and league officials who have done the same. That's because, even in an NFL environment that is allegedly more acceptable now, it's been historically hindering to be LGBTQ+ in the NFL, either as a player or team official.
When asked if he felt the NFL was an unwelcoming place to come out when he was with the Bengals, Brennan said during an interview with USA TODAY Sports: "I didn't come out until I left the NFL, so I guess I felt that way."
There are many different types of heroes in what is the continuing battle for the LGBTQ+ community to keep its rights and protect itself. Brennan is one of those heroes. He wasn't vocal as the PR chief for the Bengals, but he's speaking out now, and Brennan has a lot to say.
He does some of the talking in a new book Football Sissy: A Cross-Dressing Memoir from Belt Publishing which is scheduled to be released in September.
The book is a striking piece of work. In many ways it's an historical document because Brennan gives you an inside look at a man who had a secret passion for wearing dresses while working for an extremely conservative league.
Brennan didn't share his secret until he spoke with The Athletic in 2021.
'I feel like I want to become more genuine to people around me and not hide anymore. And maybe, I don't know, someone else will see this and it will help them,' Brennan told journalist Joe Posnanski then.
"I wanted to write something good and informative," Brennan says now. "I also wanted to write something that would help people. I think one thing I wanted to say was if you're in the LGBTQ community, and you want to help other people in it, you can do so by coming out."
One thing Brennan makes clear during our interview was how he felt the league office itself was tolerant of the LGBTQ+ community and for the most part, he said, so were the Bengals. However, Brennan explained that on occasion around the Bengals' complex: "Sometimes people would make slurs or insensitive comments in the office, or in the locker room."
What concerned Brennan the most about possibly coming out while with the Bengals? That he would be reassigned.
"Would the Bengals think it was inappropriate for me to be walking around the locker room," Brennan said during his interview with me, "around players not always wearing clothes?"
Brennan believes the NFL is a better place now for the LGBTQ+ community than when he was with the Bengals. Not greatly better, he said, but better. There's just one thing that concerns him. Brennan explained he's watched as some institutions have buckled to pressure from the Trump administration which has been anti-LGBTQ.
"I just hope the NFL doesn't," said Brennan.
If the league has the bravery of Brennan, it won't.

First image of Christian Gonzalez facing Stefon Diggs at Patriots camp
The New England Patriots showed off the first image of All-Pro cornerback Christian Gonzalez lining up against four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs in a social media post on Thursday. Gonzalez admitted earlier in the week that he was excited to match up against Diggs in practice. Iron sharpens iron, as the saying goes. Gonzalez is on the rise as one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, and Diggs is looking to climb back into the elite tier of wide receivers, following an ACL injury last October. Before the injury, Diggs was coming off six straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons. There's hope that he can get back to that same level in New England. One way for Diggs to test himself is frequent head-to-head matchups against one of the top corners in the game. Gonzalez recently made ESPN's top-10 cornerbacks list, which polled votes from executives, coaches and NFL scouts around the league. The former Oregon standout landed at No. 6 in the rankings with one NFL assistant comparing him to the No. 1 player on the list, Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II. "I think Gonzo is the next great one," a veteran NFL assistant said, via ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. "Skills, patience, length. He's the closest thing to Pat [Surtain II]. Smooth, big athlete, travels a lot, can matchup against the best guy." Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook. Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love named No. 68 on NFL Top 100 players list
A second Green Bay Packers player has been named one of the NFL's Top 100 players. Quarterback Jordan Love is No. 68 in his second appearance in the league's annual ranking, which players vote on. Packers pass rusher Rashan Gary was named No. 80 on July 14. The Top 100 list began rolling out in late June and will continue through the exhibition portion of the season; the top 10 players are announced Sept. 1. Love fell from his 2024 debut spot of No. 34 after injuries disrupted his season. Missing two starts and large parts of two other games, he threw for 3,389 yards and 25 touchdowns with 11 interceptions — the biggest weakness of his game. But over the last two seasons, Love is one of only two quarterbacks — with Detroit's Jared Goff — to throw at least 25 touchdown passes with a passer rating of 95-plus. Since becoming the Packers starter in 2023, he's thrown for multiple TD passes in 19 games, tied for third in the league over the last two seasons. "It throws me off just how comfortable he is and just how the ball comes off his hands," Gary said in the NFL's X post announcing Love's ranking. "Easy, man. I don't know if he's really got his eyes open or even thinking about it." Some opponents also spoke in the video about what makes Love such a threat. "The accuracy of the ball — deep shots, intermediate routes — he kind of has everything," Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Harrison Phillips said. So far, Love and Gary are the only two Packers players to make the list, but cornerback Xavier McKinney has a good chance to join them. Former Browns QB Baker Mayfield takes shot at former team amidst complicated QB situation
Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield recently discussed his former team's quarterback situation on the podcast New Heights. The show, hosted by NFL stars Travis and Jason Kelce, covered the current state of the Browns' quarterback depth chart among other topics with Mayfield. When it came time to discuss the Browns' quarterbacks, Mayfield made it clear he no longer cared about the team's direction: 'I plead the fifth. When I was healthy, I was starting to get pretty damn good there. Not my problem anymore,' said Mayfield. The Browns moved on from their 2018 first overall pick for several obvious reasons. In his fourth year with the team, Mayfield had his worst statistical season, which resulted in only six wins and a very disappointing end to the 2021 campaign. He finished his final year in Cleveland with a 63.6 PFF grade, ranking 40th among all eligible NFL quarterbacks. When it was time to decide between extending a well-known, declining quarterback or making a change, Cleveland opted to pursue other options. The end of Mayfield's time in Cleveland came with the official announcement of the Browns acquiring quarterback Deshaun Watson via trade. While many fans felt this was the wrong decision, the team was not in a position to risk more time with Mayfield—especially if he was seeking a large contract extension. Instead, the Browns continued their search for a franchise quarterback.
