Imps to be 'adaptable' in left-back bid
The 22-year-old Irishman left Lincoln for League One rivals Huddersfield Town at the end of his contract in early July, but the move generated a compensation fee for the Imps.
Skubala has made finding a replacement for Roughan his focus in the remaining weeks of the transfer window, even though he says they "don't have the luxury of going for a like-for-like" replacement.
"We have a plan," Skubala told BBC Radio Lincolnshire during the club's pre-season camp in Portugal.
"It might not look exactly the same as it did last season because Sean was unique in the way he played the game.
"The reason he got the move and the reason we got what we did for him is because of how he performed the role."

Summer arrival Ryley Towler is a centre-back who is capable of playing at left-back when needed.
Left-back Zach Nolan, from League of Ireland side Bray Wanderers, has been with the Imps in Portugal as a triallist alongside right-back Marcel Lavinier, a former Tottenham and Chelsea youngster who most recently featured for Yeovil Town in the National League.
What Skubala wants are players capable of seamlessly picking up different roles in different formations, be it with a back five or back four.
"It's important that we have adaptability, and maybe part of our strength as a club and as a team is being adaptable - it makes us harder to scout and harder to work on us," he said.
"We definitely want to have a core way that we do it, what our principles are, what we want the team to look like, are definitely things that don't change, but in terms of system we can adapt.
"We need to get the bodies in the building to allow us to do that and we have to be smart with how we go to work with that."

Both teams are ready for a major test this week. Tuesday's pitching matchup features Colin Rea (8-4, 4.08 ERA) for the Cubs and Quinn Priester (9-2, 3.28) for the Brewers. Wednesday's scheduled starters are Chicago's Shota Imanaga (7-4, 3.12) and Milwaukee's Freddy Peralta (12-4, 2.81). 'Look, it's two teams that are playing really well, that have postseason aspirations,' Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. 'Obviously, it feels like we're going to be battling for the division. Since returning to the mound, Shohei Ohtani, the pitcher, hasn't gotten much run support from leadoff hitter Shohei Ohtani, Los Angeles Dodgers' top offensive player. Now granted, some of that might be because the two-way unicorn doesn't exactly get an extended period of rest between the top and bottom of the first inning, having to go from the mound, to the dugout, and then to the batter's box in a matter of minutes regardless of how many balls he threw, but over the course of his first five pitching performances of the year, the two-time MVP hasn't gone yard in the first inning. In his sixth outing on the mound, however, that trend came to a screeching halt, with Ohtani blasting a two-run homer to provide himself with some rare first-inning run support. Now this home run was noteworthy for a number of reasons. First, it marked the first time Ohtani has hit a two-run homer in the first inning this season, as he has almost exclusively been used as a leadoff hitter until Dave Roberts decided to make a change after the All-Star break. It also marked the first time Ohtani has hit a home run in an inning when he was also pitching in Dodgers Blue, ending a streak that was up to nine innings over five games. Factor in that this particular home run, No. 35 on the year, ties him for the best mark in the National League, and Ohtani's legend will only continue to grow, especially if this is only the start of a much larger trend. While the Dodgers are currently struggling mightily in the month of July, holding a losing record in the month while being dominated in two separate shutout series against the Milwaukee Brewers, watching Ohtani accomplish feats of athletic wonder on a seemingly regular basis is why many fans still have faith in the Blue and White. If the team can get healthy and Ohtani can continue to get comfortable hitting and pitching in the same game, it will only lead to better results in Los Angeles.
