'Big Boy'
Never was a nickname more worthy than the one given to PGA legend Jim Dent. He was a large man at 6ft 3in and 224lb, yet he also was one of the longest drivers in the game. Not to mention the weight he carried from a game that tried to keep him from what he loved.

Before Tiger Woods, there was Jim Dent—a man who didn't just play golf, he powered through it. With drives that could split the sky and a story that cut through America's deepest racial divides, Dent's legacy is not just measured in yardage or wins, but in the doors he opened for Black athletes in a game that long refused them entry.
Dent, who passed away at 85 in his hometown of Augusta, Georgia, was one of the few Black golfers on the PGA Tour during a time when golf was still shaking off its segregationist past. Born into poverty in 1939, Dent learned the game as a caddie at the Augusta Country Club and the Augusta Municipal Golf Course—places where he once couldn't play. Despite early losses, he never stopped grinding. 'I got better each year,' he told the USGA.
He didn't win on the PGA Tour, but his mark was made on the senior circuit, the PGA Champions Tour, where he won 12 titles between 1989 and 1998 and earned over $9 million. In 1974, he won a PGA driving contest with a jaw-dropping 324-yard shot—outdriving nearly every pro in the sport. Later, Callaway honored him with a signature Big Bertha driver.

An HBCU product from Paine College, Dent was a football scholarship athlete before switching his focus to golf full-time. He represents a generation of Black athletes who had to fight not just for trophies, but for space to compete. Unlike others who are given their stage, Dent built his. Augusta's renaming of a road leading to 'The Patch' as Jim Dent Way in 2020 symbolized just that.

For fans of HBCU sports and Black golf history, Dent's life is more than a story—it's a reminder. A reminder that power, dignity, and perseverance still matter. Let's honor that legacy by investing in Black golf programs and remembering the names that made it possible for today's stars to shine.

Matt Kuchar climbs into contention at John Deere Classic after a Saturday 67 at TPC Deere Run

Saturday's third round of the John Deere Classic featured a wild, 10-way tie for the lead at one point. But making a charge and getting into contention is a name we haven't heard much of in 2025. That would be one Matt Kuchar. Kooch fired a 4-under 67 in windy conditions Saturday at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois. He walked off the golf course at 11 under, and at the time, was just a shot off the lead. Kuchar has made nine of 11 cuts in 2025 but he doesn't have a top-10 finish. His best outing was a tie for 18th in April at the Valero Texas Open. He does have a T25 at the Memorial but the rest of his finishes this season are T43, T56, T42, MC, T32, T56, T53 and a MC last week in Detroit. Safe to say, this week has energized him. "Listen, I still feel like a kid. I still get excited to come to those tournaments," he said. "One of the unique things about the game of golf is every week we all start at even par, we all have a chance of doing something great." He then made a comparison to another professional sport. "I think if you happen to be a professional baseball player and your team starts 10-40, it would be tough to keep going, but golf gives that you hope every week that you show up and you got a chance to do something great," he explained. "So I show up here excited. I show up hoping to do something great this week." Kuchar, 47, is a nine-time winner on the PGA Tour but hasn't won since the 2019 Sony Open in Hawaii. This week marks his 574th start on the circuit. He started the week 135th in the FedEx Cup standings so a strong finish this week would be a huge boost.

ISCO Championship will play at its new home in Louisville for the first time in 2025

Louisville will host the ISCO Championship for the first time in 2025. The PGA Tour event is scheduled July 10-13 at Hurstbourne Country Club in Louisville. For the last six years, it was at Keene Trace Golf Club near Lexington. 'Attending the ISCO Championship is not just about seeing top-tier professional golf — it's about being part of an atmosphere that's electric, energizing, and uniquely Kentucky,' Jimmy Kirchdorfer, chairman and CEO of ISCO Industries, the tournament's title sponsor, said in a news release. Harry Hall won his first PGA Tour trophy at the 2024 ISCO Championship. The tournament is a FedEx Cup event and debuted on the PGA Tour schedule in 2015. For the first few years, it was played at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Grand National in Auburn/Opelika, Alabama, before moving to the Bluegrass State. The ISCO Championship has a $4 million purse, and the winner receives 300 FedEx Cup points. Defending champ Harry Hall will not defend, as he is instead playing in the Genesis Scottish Open, held on the same dates. 2025 ISCO Championship field
